Player Impact Estimate (PIE) is an advanced basketball statistic that measures a player's overall impact on the game by considering various box score statistics and team performance factors. It provides a comprehensive assessment of a player's contributions on both ends of the court, incorporating scoring, defense, assists, and other key metrics to gauge their overall effectiveness.
Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a widely-used advanced statistic that evaluates a player's overall efficiency by combining various box score statistics. PER takes into account scoring, passing, rebounding, and defense, providing a single number that reflects a player's overall impact per minute played. A league-average PER is set at 15, with players above representing above-average efficiency.
Assist Ratio is an advanced statistic that measures a player's ability to create scoring opportunities for teammates. It calculates the percentage of a player's possessions that result in an assist, providing insight into their playmaking and facilitation skills. A high assist ratio indicates a player's proficiency in setting up scoring plays for their team.
Pace is an advanced statistic that quantifies the number of possessions a team uses per game. It helps evaluate a team's playing style and how quickly they transition from defense to offense. A higher pace generally correlates with a faster, more up-tempo style of play, while a lower pace suggests a more deliberate, controlled approach.
True Shooting Percentage (TS%) is an advanced statistic that provides a more accurate representation of a player's shooting efficiency by accounting for two-point field goals, three-pointers, and free throws. It calculates the percentage of points a player scores per total number of shooting possessions, offering a more comprehensive view of their scoring efficiency.
Rebound Percentage is an advanced statistic that measures a player's effectiveness on the boards by calculating the percentage of available rebounds they secure during their time on the court. It considers both offensive and defensive rebounds, giving insight into a player's rebounding prowess relative to their playing time and team's overall performance on the glass.
Ish Smith is known for his speed and playmaking ability, contributing significantly to assist-related statistics like Assist Ratio. His quickness and court vision make him effective in creating scoring opportunities for his teammates, reflecting positively in his PIE and PER.
Luka Doncic, a young and versatile player, excels in various facets of the game. His well-rounded skill set contributes to high PER, showcasing his efficiency in scoring, rebounding, and playmaking. Luka's impact on the game extends beyond traditional stats, making him a notable presence in advanced metrics like PIE.
Nikola Jokic, the Denver Nuggets' star center, is renowned for his exceptional passing skills among players in his position. His ability to facilitate offense and accumulate assists is reflected in both his Assist Ratio and PER. Jokic's all-around game contributes significantly to advanced stats, emphasizing his importance to his team's success.
Dwight Powell, a forward/center for the Dallas Mavericks, may not be as prominent in traditional stats, but his hustle, athleticism, and efficiency in areas like true shooting percentage contribute to his positive impact on the court. These qualities align well with advanced metrics like PER and PIE.
Tyus Jones, a point guard, is known for his efficient playmaking and low turnover rate, which can positively influence metrics such as Assist Ratio. While not necessarily a high-scoring player, his ability to run an offense with precision contributes to team success and is reflected in advanced stats.
Deni Avdija, a young forward for the Washington Wizards, is still developing his NBA identity. His contributions may not be fully reflected in advanced stats at this stage, but his versatility and potential to impact various aspects of the game suggest that metrics like PIE and PER could become more indicative of his performance as he progresses.
Joel Embiid, the Philadelphia 76ers' dominant center, excels in traditional and advanced stats alike. His scoring efficiency, rebounding prowess, and shot-blocking ability contribute significantly to PER and PIE. Additionally, his impact on both ends of the floor is evident in metrics like true shooting percentage and rebound percentage, making him a well-rounded player whose presence is felt in various statistical categories.

Assist to turnover ratio can be not that good (depending on the player). Some players are TOO careful with the ball and don't make risky plays that have a lot of value. Sometimes you want a passer with a worse A/TO because their genius passes are worth the mistakes. Tyrese Haliburton is great at both though, which makes him really special
@whatshorts
@whatshorts 5 ай бұрын
Do you listen to the thinking basketball podcast? They were talking about how tyrese jumps when he passes and how it effects his non passing turnovers, pretty interesting.
@lunacy5510
@lunacy5510 5 ай бұрын
Yeah. CP3 is probably all time leader in this stat and one of my players but I think he is a great example of a bit too careful and calculative player. I always watching him had this feeling that he should take more risks and while he has been extremely efficient player none of the offenses he run starting with Hornets and ending with Suns (GSW he is just a veteran role player) were particularly smooth and free flowing like you would expect from such a "genius and floor general". A lot of them were good (especially Clippers more so in regular season than playoffs, or Thunder with their guard dominant linenup) but they weren't all time great despite CP3 having all time great advanced stats. This is where I think guys like Jason Kidd, Nash and currently Haliburton are ahead of him when it comes to running the offense. All those players have significantly higher turnover averages (Haliburton less so than others) but as a result their risks pays off enough for them to still be running much better flowing and smooth team offenses than CP3. CP3 amazing player but he has always had that tendency to clamp his team offense for no particular reason at times. It's still very early in his career to judge but so far Tyrese is realy looking like he has the golden ratio of running the offense.

Lol the wilt chamberlain thing is very common knowledge. Especially if you collected cards growing up Shaq once said he wanted to do what wilt did and play every minute of the season but gave up after a few games Also, him playing every minute heavily contributed to why he was able to average 50ppg....playing every minute of a game in an era where pace was at its highest made it possible for him to do

@@whatshorts not just wilt... everyone's stats were very inflated compared to now due to the break neck pace of the time....the fast break was the most popular/innovative offense at the time so everyone was getting buckets, assists and of course rebound numbers were inflated due to pace and God awful shooting of the time (not cause people couldn't shoot but shot selection/settling for jumpers was very common)

Besides the occasional 48 minute playoff game in modern times, there is one pretty famous case of a player playing 48 minutes. and that's Wilt Chamberlain who holds the recortd for average minutes per game for a whole season with over 48 minutes!!!!!!!! I think there's a point guard in the top five of the draft that a lot of people are pointing to as San Antonio's probable pick but I can't remember the guy's name you never know how things are going to turn out but this draft class looks pretty awful.

What if TS% is given different metrics since each shot value is difference (FTs don’t happen ALL the time in a game and it plummets during playoffs unless sneaky stuff is going on) And 3pt% should be weighed higher since those shots are alot harder and dimmish if player are just taking alot of easy shots at the basket.
