Ranking NHL Team Names: 32 - 1

In this video, i ranked all 32 NHL Team Names from 32 to 1 from my least favourite to favourite. As I stated in the video, I'm only focussing on the Team Name only, not the logo or branding. I may talk briefly about it but the ranking is solely on the name of the team.
This topic has always interested me and with all the talk of Utah's new NHL Team Name and the ranking of potential name I felt this was the appropriate time to do this.
I hope you enjoyed the video. Stay tuned as I will be doing a 20-1 ranking of Utah's NHL Team Name using AI logos.

My favorites are always the ones with a real attachment to the unique area. Stuff like Hurricanes, Panthers, Stars, Predators, Blues, type of thing. The ones I don't like are the ones with no connection like Kraken, Rangers, Kings, Flames, Golden Knights which just try to desperately sound cool with no thought to the location. Avalanche and Wild are a rare case of being a mix of cool name and representative which i think is great. Fun video. If you haven't already i suggest looking up the meaning and story behind all the names. Its entertaining and sometimes changes my opinion on the name (example being Predators).

Thanks. I have checked in the past on how teams for their names (even in NBA, NFL, MLB) but not recently. I know about Predators when they found bones in 1970. But I feel the name Predator isn't the same as it was in the late 90s. I just feel Panthers, Hurricanes, and Stars are generic go to names. Like lots of high school (including mine) mascot used a panther. But they do have top 10 jersey and logo. Ironically these 3 times are the ones I'm cheering currently in the playoffs. Although I rather Canucks or Oilers win it all.

Kraken keeps it consistent with Seattle's maritime- or water-themed teams (Mariners [MLB], Seahawks [NFL], Sounders [MLS], Seawolves [Rugby], Storm [WNBA]). I thought it made sense.

@@AdderTude it's a cool name. Which is why it's top half of my list. I love the branding. Love the logo. It was fun when they revealed the name but 50 years from now who knows how people will feel about the name.

When I started watching hockey there were a couple of teams that are now defunct or have relocated that I thought had cool names as a kid. The Cleveland Barons and the Kansas City Scouts.

I think Thrashers is a great example of a cool sounding name. Thrasher (violent movement) but it was meant for the state bird. If you told me to make a logo on a brown Thrasher bird I'd be stuck at the drawing board. But somehow they made it work. Maybe it's a future video idea on past team name list.

So many times I've heard Calgary has no connection to 'Flames'. I actually think it's a great fit though, even if we inherited it. In 1886 on the second anniversary of Calgary being designated a Town, there was a great fire which burned much of the then very small town to the ground. The place was then rebuilt of sandstone, and as it grew became known as 'The Sandstone City'. So in no small way flames actually shaped the early identity of the city. Also the Canucks and Jets both deserve more respect too haha

I didn't know about the 1886 fire. But regardless I did rank flames pretty high. They're even higher then my Maple Leafs.

The Mighty Ducks was such an iconic movie way back when. The naming of the Mighty Ducks NHL team even worked its way into the sequel (D2) when some of the kids are in awe that they have a pro team named after them.

I know. But it's not long term planning. The NHL wouldn't allow the original Florida Panthers owner to call his team the Florida Blockbusters. Why allow Disney who owned the team at the time to name it after a movie? Disney doesn't even own the team anymore which is just Ducks now. At the time naming a team after a movie sounded cool but now seems silly. Which was my statement on Seattle Kraken and potentially Utah Yeti. Sounds fun and cool now but 50 years from now might sound silly.

@@JustMikeDotTv Which is why they shortened it to just the Ducks. At the same time, their AHL affiliate is the San Diego Gulls in keeping with the bird theme. Believe me, after living in California for about twenty years, there are plenty of ducks in SoCal so it's not too far-fetched of an idea. Blockbusters is just plain dumb and is an apples-to-oranges argument.

@@AdderTude I wouldn't say apples to oranges about Florida Blockbusters. NHL didn't want a team named after the owners other business (he owned Blockbusters). Disney ownerd the Mighty Ducks movie franchise so named a team after them. Originally Minnesota Northstars were going to relocate to LA and become LA Stars but moved to Dallas and Anaheim got a team. Interestingly, New York Islanders were close to being New York Ducks because there was a Ducks hockey team before them in Long Island.

You know here in the States for the most part they try to go with names with connection to the region right?

Yes, but it's a fun ranking video. Some teams need to be at the bottom. Nothing to do with how I feel about the team as I'm cheering the last place team to win the cup this year.

It's really hard for me to separate the name from the logo. If I don't like the logo or colors, I don't like the name either. Also, growing up around high schools that use the same name or logo affects how you like them. Like I grew up by a school called the Bruins, even had the same logo. So I think they are kind of trash. I'd say Flyers, Blackhawks, Red Wings, and Flames are the best if I'm trying my best to not be biased to anything else.

I think a bad name can really change your opinion if it's a good logo. I had to put the logo for visual reference. I could have used wordmark logo for the video. I considered it. But visually it wasn't as appealing. But I based my ranking on originality, if it makes sense to the region, if it rolls off the tongue and if other major sports team have that name which came first. Like Jets and Kings for example.

the idea behind the Blue Jackets was to honor the Civil War vets, or something like that, here in the States we do not rank the intelligence of Columbus, Ohio very high; especially when you shorten the name to Blue. and Let's Go Blue is a common cheer by their hated rival in college football The Michigan Wolverines.

There is such a thing as the Florida Panther. Carolina Whalers is such a bad name. This is obviously opinion based, but many of these rankings are showing a lack of understanding of the area. Blue Jackets is based on Civil War veterans.

Not at all. I know there's such thing as a Florida Panther which is why Miami Panther wouldn't make sense. I know how a lot of teams got their names and the reasoning behind it. Panthers, Hurricanes and Stars aren't original names. Lots of youth sports teams use those names because they're generic. I did this ranking for fun because a lot of people are ranking Utah's potential names. And Carolina Whalers was more of a joke because of the C with a whale logo.

The name Whalers was not retained when the franchise moved to North Carolina. Carolina Hurricanes has been the name since.

@@billcornwell3619 yes. They were always Carolina Hurricanes when they relocated to Hartford. But they own the name and trademark to Whalers. Hence why they still do Whaler nights. The owner who relocated them didn't care for the name or brand which is why they never did Whalers night until the new owners came along. I did notice Vancouver Canucks started to use that orca C logo the same year Hartford moved to Carolina.

Panthers at 32? Really? They’re called the panthers because of the literal Florida panthers that are endangered, not just a generic name. I know ours isn’t that creative, but last? Jeez.

Yes, I'm not a fan of the name. Too many Panthers in youth sports and high school teams. This is just a name ranking. If it was a jersey or logo ranking it would be in the top 10 (probably 1st for jersey). And guess what? Since my Leafs are out I'm actually rooting for Florida to win it all.

Avelanche and Wild are two of the worst names imo.
