Nice list! Psychoderelict is much easier to stomach if you get the 'music only' version. Now and Then, is a fantastic song that probably flies under the radar. Lou Reed covered it on the Daltrey sings Townshend Carnegie Hall show. I remember seeing the PT solo tour in 1993 or 19944 for the record, and he had actors onstage, then the technical difficulties kicked in, and he scraped that. Ticked off, he launched into a great, hard version of Magic Bus, and played a solid play list for the remainder of the night. I liked the video vhs that he did for Chinese Eyes + White City (the song Night School was very decent, featuring his daughter Emma (I believe).

Hey again! For me the only version of Psychoderelict to own is the music only version. Hehe! I'm kind of upset that Pete hasn't given us any solo material for a while. I'm sure plenty in the archives! I appreciate you sharing your memory of that concert from 93 or 94! Rock on.

I bought Chinese Eyes in '82 when I was 12. To this day it is still my favorite PT album. The critics hated it. They were wrong. It's a beautiful rock album with Somebody Saved Me, Sea Refuses No River and Slit Skirts being three of his best songs - Who or solo. It's nice to come across someone who feels similarly about it. Listening to Pete fees like hanging out with a dear old friend. Love him.

Great vid Hanna. I'm a bjg Who fan. I have all of Pete's solo albums to White City. Found a vinyl copy of Who Came First last year. I need to spend more time with them as I tend to reach for Who albums when I'm in the Pete mood. I like Rough Mix with Ronnie Lane and White City a lot. Scoop is an interesting album of demos.

I love 'Uniforms (Corp d'espirit)' from 'all the best cowboys have Chinese eyes', I think 'Empty glass' is my favourite of his 4 solo albums of new/original material. Though 'Psychoderelict' is a superb concept album with very good songs throughout. 'I am afraid', 'Dont try to make me real' and 'Brilliant blues' is very good from 'White city'........He's a great writer, a very good singer and a brilliant guitarist. An all round star.

Pete Townshend`s Deep End Live, 1986 WEA Canada: "Released by popular demand!" (Writing on the back cover.) This is my favorite one. You can find Pete Townshend`s Deep End Sessions on KZfaq to get an impression of what happened there. In my opinion, you find Pete Townshend at his best performing with fresh energy and joy, but not in his typical known style, because some wind instruments blow the usual Townshend-sound away.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Personally, I'd still put Empty Glass at the top of my list. But Chinese Eyes would be next. And The Sea Refuses No River might be my favorite Pete solo song. Aside from the plaintively humbling every everyman of the lyrics, (and maybe this is bias from being a drummer), Simon Phillips really knocks it out of the park. His playing is sooo fluid. Those tom hits, the hat play... perfection. And I do think Chinese Eyes is hands down the best sounding Pete record. It's sonically gorgeous, you know? White City is still great (Give Blood!), but the production feels a bit too 80s at times. Whereas Chinese Eyes only leans on the compressor just enough to make it all present while still retaining the dynamics. I found my way to the record back in the day after hearing Slit Skirts, which I still love. And like you mentioned, Somebody Saved me is another standout. I also always liked Stop Hurting People and Exquisitely Bored. And Face Dances Pt 2 is a solid pop styled gem. Thanks for doing the video. Keep on keepin'. I was watching some ranking videos and thought, Pete Townshend! Your's was the first one that popped up. Maybe the only one(?). Anyway, it made my night of trolling KZfaq in the time of the plague. Brilliant Blues & Crashing by Design . Two of my favourite songs by Pete . And , my favourite Who song is Pure & Easy ( the version on Odds & Sods ) . There's a nice video on KZfaq , of Pete playing Slit Skirts at the Prince's Trust Concert , with Phil Collins on drums . I noticed on another video , that you showed Sinatra's Strangers in the Night album . My Dad played that all the time when I was growing up . Pretty good list. Falling back in love with The Who and Pete again after sorta falling off the horse. I feel like The Who's critical stance swings back and forth pretty heavily depending on whether people want to pretend like Tommy is bad (it's not). His solo stuff is strong but quite unlike The Who, so many people dislike that.

My faves are Empty Glass, Chinese Eyes, and White City. Top tracks are "The Sea Refuses No River", "Give Blood", "A little is Enough", and "Pure and Easy" (though I find the 'Oo version superior). The "Scoop" albums are also great. I especially dig "The Ferryman" and "Ask Yourself". Have you seen the live version of "Give Blood" on here? It's one of the very best live performances I've seen on video, in the same league as "A Quick One", "Young Man Blues" London Coliseum 1969 and (different artist) Elvis Costello and the Attractions at Rockpalast in 1978, one of few other performances I've found on par with the energy of the classic 'Oo.

Well, girlfriend, you just gained another subscriber due to our mutual love of & fascination with the greatest musical artist of all time - Mr. Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend. I only met another female diehard Pete fan once in my life & now I know 3 of us! The Who were one of my faves since high school (class of '75), but I didn't become totally obsessed & check out Pete's solo work until I saw a double bill of The Kids Are Alright & Quadrophenia one snowy winter night in Boston in 1980. My soul mate & I walked home in a blizzard singing all the songs & I was in white hot love. It has yet to cool down for me. I have a real affinity for White City, but my whole family knows that I want The Sea Refuses No River & Parvardigar played at my funeral. Yes, please do a Who album review & then maybe a combo Who/Pete live recordings list. You can't really say Who without Live At Leeds!

Interestingly. My favorite Pete song is Pure and Easy as well. That song has a bit of history to it. Pete first sang those words. Pure and easy at the close of The Who song. Song Is Over off of The Who’s Next album. When Odds and Sods The Who album came out. The band The Who. Did that song it’s on that album. Prior to Pete releasing it solo. Pete’s solo version is much brighter and cleaner than the group’s version. It was a good idea to try the song again. I fell in love with that song when I first heard it. His sound mixing on that song is phenomenal.

At 6:58, my personal, PERSONAL favorite album to, WHITE CITY,a novel I don't know if you know this, but he was influenced by PRINCE's PURPLE RAIN when he recorded that record. There'a little "full length" movie that came with it not a great movie, but interesting nonetheless.also, you also ranked another one of my favorite PETE TOWNSHEND record,ROUGH MIX with RONNIE LANE.Yes, you mentioned JOHN ENTWHISTLE and ERIC CLAPTON but did you also know that the great CHARLIE WATTS (of the ROLLING STONES) plays drums on some or most of the tracks on the album. If your still interested in buying the psychoderlict CD,there is a CD of it without the annoying dialogue, just the music.Just some information that I wanted to pass on to you,by the way,"crashing by design" is my favorite track from the WHITE CITY album.I happen to purchase a live album of his called PETE TOWNSHEND's DEEP END FACE THE FACE.it was recorded during the Eighties while he was promoting the white city record.it was only available for a limited time on record store day three months ago.anyway, stay safe and be well.

Always good to hear from a Townshend fan. Sad that you don't rate Iron man because it has some good songs and performances on it. It features an Australian artist called Deborah Conway who sites the experience as an inspiration for her future success in her homeland. Check out her "String of Pearls" album. The Ronnie Lane collaboration "Rough Mix" came about when he was diagnosed with MS. A bunch of mate getting together to record a few songs and help out a friend. There were a lot of uncredited musicians also on that album. I think Kenny Jones mentioned this in his autobiography. Great album and very underrated. "Psychederalict" featured a lot of stuff from his work on Life House, even the dialogue from an unpublished script features. As you say, the plot is a bit all over the place (I think it was a radio play) but the song are great and it's worth finding the "music only" version of the album which I like to listen to in the car. Anyway, great work on this video. Looking forward to seeing how you rate the Who's albums.

Very impressed. A Who/PT fan who just rung all my bells!!! Briefly, lifelong fan. Saw them 70s/80s/90s/00s. I too just listen to the music first, and that often is enough. But, as you mentioned, pete is true genius, and his writing just keeps giving in it's layers. Anyway, life had gotten in the way the last decade, and I lost interest in most things from my past. I knew "Who" was coming out, but didn't really give a shit. Then the day our family kitty passed, I flipped open YT, and there was the deluxe edition. Hmmm? WTF? WTF!! Not expected, not even looked forward too, but what a fine piece of music (another conversation). It also kicked open the old once dead admiration of Pete and his genius. You mentioned Chinese Eyes/Slit Skirt, (and this would have been likely when I was reading his biography), I hear "I'm number one on the home team, but I still feel unfulfilled, It's sympathy not tears people need, when you're the front page sad news," and it dawns on me he's likely written this in a hotel room somewhere, moping as he does, watching a car commercial on TV, or a newscast beckoning the viewer to be part of 'the home team!' And it lets me appreciate that I can see what he sees sometimes. Good job!

I’d definitely be interested in seeing a video of The Who studio albums ranked. To give it a bit of “suspense”(ha/ha) I’d maybe go least to most favorite. Out of all the "bigs" (Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Zeppelin etc), The Who have always been my number one favorite. To me, Townshend’s songwriting has an emotional depth to it that the others just don’t seem to reach. On another note, I can totally relate to your comment about it being really weird talking to your phone. I’ve been a VC viewer and commenter of videos since 2012 and have made several attempts over the past few years at trying to make videos, but have been unsuccessful do to the fact that I can’t get passed that weirdness feeling. I just can’t get comfortable with it… Anyway… keep up the good work!

It is a very awkward thing to film yourself and talk to your phone. I'm not sure I'll ever be 100% comfortable with it, but I hope I can loosen up a little more and be more myself in time. Personally i`m not familiar with Townsend`s solo work but the Who track My Generation is one of my favourite tracks released in the 1960`s. The music, the vocal delivery, the intelligent lyrics. Everything about that tune is perfect. And it still sounds relevant and hasn`t dated. Obviously you can make whatever videos you want but personally i don`t see the point in doing favourite album videos by artists you`re not really into.

I actually found a good copy of Who Came First years ago at one of my local thrift stores, been meaning to pull that out again for a spin. Yeah I remember it being in that late 60's/early 60's Indian guru phase a lot of those guys were involved in then, Carlos Santana and others did similar albums at the time. Don't think I've ever heard Empty Glass but I remember White City being out, that was probably the first solo Pete I ever heard. Dislikes? You've probably picked up some trolls. When you upload a video, go into Edit Video, then Advanced Settings. There should be a box that says "Users can view ratings for this video". Untick it so the check mark in the little box disappears and click Save Changes. That way they can still thumb it down but it doesn't appear to anyone but you. Takes their fun away. Nice overview, cheers!

My dad left me about 1000 LPs, 1000 45s, and about 100 CDs. I only took about 700 of the LPs, because some were just stuff I'd never listen to and many were in pretty rough shape. I've gone through and cleaned, sleeved, and cataloged most of the LPs, but doing the same for the 45s is going to be quite a chore. I had about 100+ LPs and 1200 CDs of my own and have bought another 2-300 records since. I really like what you say/write about his guitar playing/styling's, all so true -- I've also always considered him a wonderful piano composer... I saw your comment on "Unused Piano" - checked it out and have become smitten by listening to that track daily - which led me into the 'Scoop' series. That's an exciting place to start being such a goldmine for all the outtakes/demo's/alternate-versions and such . Then I'm kind of going in order and taking on Empty Glass (I'll get to 'Chinese Eyes') I'm blown away by the track "And I Moved" - a lot of commenting on what exactly the lyrics mean - obviously they are about some of the demons he was wrestling with at the time - but to me, lyric's aside - it's one of the most stimulating piece's of music I know in this world, and shows exactly why I knew I should devour his solo work! I'm going to check out some of your other Vid's too, thanks
