I only really discovered these guys last year, cos I'd written them off as a stoner band, but heard Burden of Restlessness and it was way proggier than I expected and absolutely fantastic. It's great to see them getting some love from SOT cos they deserve to be heard by a bigger audience. Looking forward to catching them live on their UK tour in a couple of months 🤘🏻

The Burden of Relentlessness is the going stir crazy in pandemic lock down album I was hoping to get from all of my favorite bands but really only got from King Buffalo. That disc is literal therapy.

Morning all - right JUST to day- this record by #kingbuffalo is SO GOOD! It's easily my record of 2022 so far. If like me you like bands like the New Candy's or the Dandy Warhols (at their most psych/stoner - think of their song 'Pete's International Airport') with sprinkles of desert rock and classic #Hawkwind thrown into a new melting pot - this IS for you. The production is first rate, it doesn't have that awful compressed sound that a lot of metal records seem to have these days. Phew! It's melodic, engaging and ever changing. Great soundscapes! King Buffalo - come to the UK 🇬🇧 🙌

I have everything they've ever done on vinyl and they do not have a single bad song. I have never skipped any songs or looked forward to the next one on any of the albums. I enjoy each and every song while I'm it. King Buffalo is a really great band.

This is a great review of their recorded history. When people ask me about them I say that they are a mixture of Pink Floyd and tool. Great, great band.

This band is 🔥! I am a teen of the 80s so it takes a bit for my meter to register on newer bands. This band has IT!!! Absolutely fantastic! I hear Black Sabbath, Hendrix and their unique sound. They are a trio! I am a BIG Fan!!! I even bought a Hagstrom D2F gold sparkle guitar how cool is that 🎸!

Saw King Buffalo last month (Bristol, UK). Absolutely superb. Only discovered them in the last 12 months and are my current favourite band on constant play. Looking forward to their new Repeater album due in September.

It's been awhile since I've had a favorite band like Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown, RIDE, STP, but these guys are now onboard!

This band is awesome. The music is amazing.

Acheron was recommended on a Prog Seat episode a couple years ago and became my favorite new album. Lately I’m exploring the rest of the discography and they are all so good that KB is now a top favorite new band. Every single song is spell-bindingly great! I’ll still probably get Acheron first but I want them all!

King Buffalo is on constant daily play for me the last 2 years since I accidentally discovered them on a Steve Wilson playlist that was running on Tidal. I almost skipped on them but another song popped up a few days later and reeled me in

"The Burden of Restlessness" was my favorite album of 2021, and I'm not typically a big Prog & Stoner Rock guy.

King Buffalo is the best band to combine doom, stoner, psych and space rock.

Just saw them in April in Tampa. Very loud but great band. Really like The Burden of Restlessness. Acheron is considered live but without an audience. Recorded in a cave in NY state. Great stuff.

Discovered them through SoT, Acheron is atmospheric and rather trippy. Top shelf stuff!

I only discovered this band about 4 weeks ago and immediately bought the latest 2 albums. As you say Pete, they mix up genres quite effortlessly. I detect a David Gilmour guitar tone in there but it is never overdone because the big riff and the surge in sound is always just around the corner.

I always thought of them as "Pelican meets Earth meets Spacelords" King Buffalo is awesome.... each album is it's own thing... but they have a common thread.

Nice work, love seeing your deep dive into a band that's well known in the small stoner/doom/psych scene, but you'll be introducing them to lots of new fans. Last time I saw them they were opening for the mighty Elder, who you hopefully will explore if you haven't already. Along similar lines is Italy's cosmic doom psych sludge overlords Ufomammut, and Dallas Texas' Wo Fat, who throw some swampy hoodoo blues into the mix. Both released new albums on May 6.

King Buffalo are a top band. The new record Regenerator is right up there with the best of them, and if anything even heavier than some of the earlier releases.

I'm excited for this one. The only thing I've heard is Longing To Be The Mountain, but I really like it!

Found King Buffalo when they were recommended by my streaming software after listening to Earthless (my other big discovery of last year). Immediately bought all the albums available (did the same with Earthless too) and preordered Acheron as soon at it was announce on vinyl and the video too. Going to see them twice on their UK tour in July. Brilliant band 👍

My favourite band of the last 5 years, along with All Them Witches. My ranking would be different, but agree that they are all great albums. Can’t believe you didn’t mention any blues influences/sound though!

Pete just call this music Desert Prog. I would also include Elder, Earthless, and Rezn from the USA. Here in the UK we have Boss Keloid, Elephant Tree, and Green Lung (who might be more rock but you should still give them a listen). Finding King Buffalo CDs in the UK is really hard without resorting to importing. Good news they are touring here in July so means I will have to make the 300 mile round trip to Manchester to get physical copies.

King Buffalo are the greatest band on the planet right now. Every song demands your attention. This is not background music. Headphones and focus and you’ll be richly rewarded. The audio engineering is some of the best I’ve ever heard. Pete is right, these albums are all so close in quality that it’s futile to attempt to rank them. And they can pull it all off live on stage, tight and ultra-compelling.

KING BUFFALO are great, i follow them for the last...ca. 2 or 3 years. Do justice for another ultra great New York band, the mighty ENDLESS BOOGIE! Just do it!

King Buffalo = kinda like Pink Floyd with their "The Wall" album but on steroids. At their foundation is that of a great classic rock and roll band. Stellar musicianship, incredible arrangements, and they have found as a band that magic only music can bring: "the sum being greater than the parts". Their sound is much larger than the fact they are 3 piece band, and produce their sound live incredibly well; they are not just a studio band. If you like good rock and roll music then check these guys out as they rarely disappoint. It's time for America to wake up and smell the fuzz again ! Get back to making killer rock and roll, like these guys do !

Longing to be the Mountain My feelings on TBoR have changed over time, as I initially did not like it all; the lyrics were so dour and dark, and the shorter songs and more emphasis on heavy elements over the spacy stuff wasn't really to my taste. However, taking the context of the initial pandemic lockdowns and how it impacted all of our lives into account, I have started to like it more and come back to it quite regularly. I think Dead Star is in the fifth spot because it hasn't quite gripped me in the way my top four have. Sonically, I enjoy it more than TBoR, but I find it a bit less memorable. I think I need to sit down with the headphones and give the vinyl a spin again, as think I just haven't given it enough time to sink in. My top four could honestly be in any order, but if Repeater had been a full length with additional songs of the same quality as the existing songs, it could have been my number one. I very much enjoy all six of these records.

my favorites are Acheron and Longing to be the Mountain. And my least favorite is Burden of Relentnessless. Couple of great songs on it but some songs sounds to similar. Miss the atmosphere on that album. The other three albums are great!

I'm always interested in what's new or newish and fresh, even at age 60. All you people over 40 that are stuck in the past... wake up!!! After this ranking I just went straight to a KZfaq mix which I think was older stuff. I liked their newest; 'The Burden of Restlessness' more. Thank you Pete!!! My pick for newish and fresh... and awesome is SCOREDATURA (with an 'E'). Hot-rodded, stripped down, but still lush and virtuoso instrumental prog metal/hard rock from Australia.

Is it just me or does there seem to be a big difference in sound quality between The Burden of Restlessness and the rest of the catalog?
