I've done this exercise several times over the years but I find that it constantly changes, with my current faves being Hemispheres and A Farewell To Kings but give me a month or so and it will probably be different again. 😊

I have been playing Vapor Trails (remixed) so much during the past 4 or 5 months and have recently discovered that listening to the original mix as well makes for an all round Vapor Trails experience. It's an under rated album which you have managed to give some 'good press' to here.

Most if not all of Rush’s catalog has songs that can help you grow mentally. I’m glad u like it. I wish that I did. I’m just not digging much of what I hear on the record. Theme and messages can be awesome but for me the music has to come first.

@norwegianblue2017 I wished I liked it but sadly I don’t. I guess it depends on where u came in. My childhood was in the 70’s and high school in the 80’. Just boils down to preference. Not a big fan of incorporating lots of “electronica” nor ska and reggae, etc that whole Police and post punk stuff. Same reason why I don’t care for much the red blue and yellow period of King Crimson with Adrian Belew.

@norwegianblue2017 I didn’t want them to make the same albums over and over again either. I just wanted something different not new wave or post punk sounding stuff. Again just a matter of preference

Caress of Steel has benefitted from hindsight. Its greatest strength, IMO, is that you can hear the nascent sounds of 2112 emerging. But The Necromancer is, again in my opinion, a step back from By Tor and the Snow Dog. I find the closing guitar riff to be hackneyed in a way little else in the Rush catalogue is. A pretty good album, but I think the rose colored glasses are particularly strong with that one.

Honestly, I’ve always been hard pressed to rank their 5 consecutive masterpiece albums from ‘ 76 - ‘ 81. But I do like where you have Caress of Steel. I can appreciate their early, innovative side of that one. And I love making a case for “ Clockwork. “ It’s not perfect but it’s loaded with harder edged material, very reminiscent of their older work. “ Headlong Flight “ in particular. I believe Rush went out like a lion with this album. RIP Neil.

Art and music are completely subjective. I think it varies completely especially based on age. Personally, I think it's very difficult to span a band beyond 10 years and still keep the music interesting. Personally, after Moving Pictures, I lost interest in Rush, I did see them play live during Power Windows and Blue Oyster Cult opened for them and quite frankly were a better live band on that night. BOC packed all their best songs into a 55 minute set and were much more interesting than Rush. Alex Lifeson looked bored through the majority of the set until the end when they did a Medley of their older material. I also saw Rush live on 2112, Farewell to Kings, and In my opinion, their musical peak on Hemispheres. Their live shows had a lot of energy back then because they were young and had an edge. Hemispheres was their peak musically, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures were really good albums and tours as well. Fly by Night through Moving Pictures was their best work especially live in concert. They had their own sound and image.

Agreed. I wish Alex would have put his foot down with respect to where Geddy and Neil took the band.

Wow, we're close, but I'd wager many will disagree with Signals low ranking. Vapor Trails has to be the remaster. Caress...was a formula for things to come, but not quite there for me. Permanent Waves is higher for me, and comparing track for track with Moving Pic.s might surprise you....even though MP's has one more tune. Thoughtful analysis!

I totally agree with Presto ranking last. That album and RTB's are the worst sounding Rush albums by far, and I assume that had to do with Rupert Hine being the producer. I also agree with Moving Pictures at #1, although I would have Hemispheres at #2.

You mentioned how much you hate The Big Money because Geddy is playing a bass without a headstock, he is playing a Wal bass on the video and the album, which is not what you are talking about. Plus, The Big Money is one the more challenging bass lines in Geddy’s library.

You are right. He’s playing a Steinberger in the Distant Early Warning video. However, my point remains I don’t like the style of that type of playing no matter how difficult it is to play it. It sounds as I said sputtering at times. At least to my ears. Just a matter of preference/taste. I appreciate you for commenting and sharing your thoughts/views and your musical taste.

I cut my Rush teeth on their Kings album around 1980 and some days it's still my favorite album by them. On power windows I'm the exact opposite from you I like the first five songs but don't care much for the last three. As far as Presto I couldn't get enough of it when it came out and it's definitely still one of my favorites. I agree with you about the song countdown too much NASA talk but over the years I got used to it and was able to kind of block it out and listen to the awesome instrumentation. On Grace under pressure the songs are pretty much mediocre for me. On hold your fire I like maybe just three or four songs and mission is one of them. I can see how moving pictures would be a lot of people's favorite it did have many radio hits yeah I like it a lot but I wouldn't say over all its my favorite Rush album but easily in my top 10, I think all your top ones are also mine. Vapor Trails is probably my favorite post signals album. I'm kind of lukewarm when it comes to snakes & arrows and clockwork angels, I usually like test for echo and counterparts quite a bit more, roll the bones has some great moments but I'm not big on the last few songs. The first Rush album I like everything on it except the bluesy here again, just doesn't sound right hearing Rush doing bluesy Rock.

Here is my worst to best. I absolutely love the top 9 albums. That is from 2112 to Signals. I think Clockwork Angels and Test for Echo are very good. I was not 100% sure where to put Caress of Steel and Power Windows. I would not rank them any higher but I might rank them lower. From Roll the Bones to Caress of Steel could be in any order also. I think they are all good albums but not classic works by Rush. I have never really gotten into Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows. I think Snakes and Arrows is the better album but I could not put them any higher because I never listen to them. They just never really kept me interested enough to listen to them over and over again. feedback and Hold your Fire are not good. I still like much of hold your fire live. There are some good songs on that album. Feedback is just forgettable. Feedback Hold Your Fire Vapor Trails Snakes and Arrows Rush Roll the Bones Presto Caress of Steel Power Windows Test for Echo Clockwork Angels 2112 Fly by Night A Farewell to Kings Counterparts Hemispheres Permanent Waves Grace Under Pressure Moving Pictures Signals

I do not understand how you cannot see how Counterparts is Rush doing grunge. It is a very grunge like album. Everyday Glory is the best song on Counterparts. The meaning of the song and its lyrics is one of Neil's best ever. Very emotional. I know it is just your opinion but compared to what Rush was doing, Counterparts was very heavy. I am not a big Mystic Rhythms fan. Too much synth. Interesting enough rhythm but not incredible. One of my picks for the most overrated of all Rush songs. Kind of boring. Test for Echo is another song that is just okay. It never really gets going enough. Not really like their 70's songs though. I think both Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows both have too many mid-tempo songs that are very similar to each other. They get a little boring.
