Lions (Got a soft spot for this album - brings me back to 2001 like a time machine) 4. Shake Your Money Maker 5. Three Snakes 6. By Your Side 7. Warpaint 8. Before the Frost...

If you read Steve Gormans book, that whole deal of them getting kicked off was planned by their manager Pete Angelos . Yes, Chris got taken out of context when he said to a journalist that he didn’t like light beer and they reported that Chris said he didn’t like LITE beer which was the sponsor of the tour. Angelos saw an opportunity to get more publicity which is why Chris held off saying anything from the stage until they hit Atlanta their home town.

Above all other shows that you've done, Pete, I'm most grateful for this Black Crowes and the Deep Cuts Thin Lizzy you did because both of them made me realize that these 2 bands that I liked deserved MUCH MORE ATTENTION from me. So today, Thin Lizzy is one of my favorite bands and since I already love both By Your Side and Three Snakes and One Charm - which I had never heard before seeing this show - I"m sure that the BCs will be one of my top bands shortly. THANK YOU ALL! I think I'll save this video because I know eventually, I'll probably want to get one of the DVDs or live shows that Rick mentioned.

Woo- hop!!!! The band I switched to after Jerry died, but has been a fan since first seeing Jealous Again on MTV.. .. Have hit about 70 shows and it goes well into the triple digits if you add the brothers and their side/solo projects.. BTW- I’m the guy with the red solo cup drinking and sticking his tongue out waiting on line in the Cabin Fever Dvd just before Appaloosa....

Marc Ford was the biggest difference. He is so much better, more mature, groovy, badass player than Jeff. I remember seeing a performance on MTV after the first album came out, and Jeff's limitations were badly on display. I knew it, and so did the Robinson's. And when TSHAMC came out in 1992, the upgrade was clear and so evident. Marc Ford is the best guitarist The Black Crowes ever had. And he matched up with Rich so well too. 1. Amorica 2. The Southern Harmony... 3. Three Snakes and One Charm 4. By Your Side 5. Warpaint 6. Shake Your Moneymaker 7. Before The Frost 8. LIONS (I do 'not' dislike this one, I dig it just fine. And I love the cover art too!) *Also, the "Live at The Greek with Jimmy Page" is bloody fantastic, so if it were allowed here, it would be way up there! The "1972" ep is cool. And any record that features a BOWIE track wins points! ✨ **And now, in April of 2024, we have an 'excellent' new Black Crowes album (albeit with a total shite album cover), "HAPPINESS BASTARDS" M ⚡

now yet another EXCITING episode, and a what a tie in with Pardo's top 30 southern rock album countdown too in a way 🙂 now first off Black Crowes are one of my all time favorite rock n' roll bands of all time, and it started off with their debut, and then went KA-BOOM when their 2nd album dropped, well, when Remedy first aired on MTV and i just fell in love with everything, it ALL clicked the music, the looks, hell i even't went up to my parents loft to dig out some of their old bellbottom pants which i started wearing for a while, and even went all the way hippie and started walking barefoot in the summertime, from then on i was HOOKED, now as i mentioned in many comments before, i come from the music world, born i into it, and i have a brrroooad tast in music, so i was into my thrash, DM, classic metal, early "hair" metal, glam rock (proper glam, not Poison etc), 70's hard rock, punk and H/C, grindcore, early BM (as in 80's), goth, synth-pop and classic 80's pop (usually of the more melancholic stuff, the deeper pop songs, which were possible in the '80 to become hits, imagine that today haha) at this stage, since then i have expanded immensely as in 93ish i felt the need to listen anyhting BUT conventional music, ie verse/chorus music or even music played with traditional instruments and so forth, and i can probably list without including too many sub sub genres of music i don't like, ok, ALTHOUGH i am a purist admist my openmindedness, ok, a couple of examples of music i can't stand is yacht rock (makes me sick and is souless music) and any studio musician music, y'know where the musicians involved are perfect at their instruments, but that's all, throw them a good riff and something with nerve, and they wouldn't know what to do with it, other than perform ot whilst sucking the living shit out of it, not ok, and nu-metal or anything modern in terms of metal, with it's terrible sterile production, and i could go on, and A.O.R (though i did have a period when i tried that genre too) and adult oriented rock and the likes, SO, enough of that, just so you know where i'm coming from, an well experinced music enthusiast AND somebody, thanx to my dad, understands music, like a musician would, and even more so production inc arrangements and so forth, now that's all fine cause music is mostly subjective although not only and i have the ability to judge music objectively too, so without further a due, oh and btw i must confess after '98 i lost interest, so i can only give you my top 5, sorry, i don't have time to listen to and judge their 3 last studio albums now, and why would i, cause i got soooo much music to listen that's being released now, yesterday and beyond, that i don't feel the need right now, but maybe someday, and you all had a intersting ranks, though some very surprising ones too, so, my nr 5 is; By Your Side (clean production and a new line up, and lackluster songwriting, but still an ok album, has a couple of good tunes) 4. Three Snakes & One Charm ( their difficult no more hits albums, as mentioned, and a grower, although i really gre to like it, it seemed like they were kinda loosing steam too, sorry i have to be brief due to my long ass introduction, which i feel is valid to give a point about where i'm coming from etc) 3. Amorica ( how to follow up a perfect album, well they managed to do so, and that say alot, and i dug this from the get go, as they where still growing with this and the next one, and this album is all swagger, dirty, yet sassy, and groovy, brilliant) 2. Shake Your Money Maker ( i think James said some correct observations cencering this, to write such an album with this much soul and maturity at that age,WOW, and they where the OPPOSITE of all the hair bands of the '80's, pure 60's rock n roll n' soul n' blues, only thing is the production could've been a bit more authentic, but otherwise, CLASSIC, i regret soo much for not having that OG shirt with those classic crows on the front anymore 😕) 1, The Southern Harmony.....( PERFECT, this is oen of thee most timeless rock n' roll albums made in the 90's, though like all timeless music it could have been, in this case have been made in the 70's, it's evrything you need from this band

Feb 24th, 1999 at the Orpheum in Boston. It was the second concert I ever attended, and the first time I ever went to a big city on my own. I almost didn't go - a huge blizzard was barreling up the east coast that night and I had just gotten my license the year before. But my teenage self decided to throw caution to the wind and risk it. So a friend and I piled into my 86' Oldsmobile and drove the 85 miles to Boston. Fortunately the encore finished just in time for us to get out of the city before we got stranded - the snow started to fall as we were literally getting into the car. Anyway, I remember they played "Nebakanezer" but not much else form Three Snakes and One Charm, which was a bit disappointing since that album was my favorite by the Crowes at the time. But overall a fantastic performance, especially considering that they overhauled the band for that tour. Would love to see them again on the tour they're doing this summer.

I had to come on here to say thanks to Jim for introducing me to By Your Side and for sending me back down the Black Crowes rabbit hole that I left after the first two albums. You also recommended the Steve Gorman book Jim, and I've read it now and really enjoyed it, but some of it was almost heartbreaking, especially the Jimmy Page stuff. I kind of admire the Robinson brothers arrogance/self assurance? in not wanting to be a backing band but it's Jimmy Page and they sounded so good together 😭. I managed to get a ticket for their UK tour in a few months. I had to buy a VIP ticket as the general admission tickets were sold out, and it cost me £170 but I have to see them. For £250 I could have got a meet and greet ticket but I couldn't guarantee that I could bite my tongue and not call them dickheads over the treatment of Jimmy Page 🤭. Many thanks for sending me back down the rabbit hole Jim, you're a star🤩. (but crazy for not placing Shake Your Money Maker as number 1🤭).

This is a great listen. I'll post another comment later about why the Black Crowes are special to me, in particular, even though I haven't heard five of these eight albums (!) yet (I think I will, though, after watching this video!) But I'd like to make a humble request to the Sea of Tranquility panel. Pete's been doing this for years and most of the old ones are on his own (I think), and perhaps he's just gotten so used to this that he knows -- but could everyone please make sure to clearly mention the name of the album you are going to (passionately) talk about before you start doing so. Not all of us are familiar with the whole discography of these bands and part of the reason to listen is to learn more about that whole discography, and some of us either can't see them or are just listening to the video as we do other stuff, so even though the rest of the panelists (whom you are rightly addressing and it's this group communication that makes these videos so good to watch, so keep it up) may know instantly waht album you are talking about and may be able to see you hold it up, but not all of us audience can.

Enjoyed everyone's picks. Here's my two cents: 1. Southern Harmony - the production, the songs, the performances... untouchable! Especially jumping from SYMM and hearing what Marc and Eddie added. 2. Amorica - love the 70s funk and psych textures, and the range and quality of material. *If I could include the album Band, it would be here after Amorica. Criminal it wasn't released at the time. I love the minimal production and maturing Americana flourishes. The band sounds cohesive, and the songs have an emotional depth. I don't really count Tall as an album in the same way because it basically turned into Amorica. Band was totally scrapped after the record company rejected it. 3. Three Snakes - a more down, druggy atmosphere pervades, but still a great collection of songs. 4. Warpaint - the first album that was "new" when I loved the band and was waiting for it, and also my first Black Crowes concert on this tour. Luther is a perfect fit. The band "ages gracefully" into a more rootsy, mature entity, though still clouded in weed smoke. 5. By Your Side - I love the energy and spirit of this album, but it feels like their heart wasn't in it at times and it's a little too glittery, polished, and perfect for my tastes. 6. Before the Frost (single CD version) - I love the sound of the band here, it just grooves, and all the more impressive that it's live. 7. Shake Your Money Maker - As legendary as this album is... not only is it overplayed, but there's a stiffness and over-simplicity to the drums and lead guitar (with the exception of "Hard to Handle" played by producer Brendan O'Brien) that shows their inexperience. Understandable of course, but it's why I seldom put this one on. 8. Lions - You guys made me reconsider this one, and I dig it more than I thought, but I only put it on when I want to hear something weird and I'm tired of the others. Some of it is just plain awkward, but I dig a lot of it too.

i was a bit doubtful when I saw the length of this video but I honestly thought it was one of the best I have seen on the channel. Some great comments : 'It's all pizza' (Jim), ' It's just a pubic hair between these two albums' (Rick) and 'You just reached into that vagina! (Jamie). It also made me spend time with each album and I was forced to resort to scoring each song to decide on an order, but I got there: 1. Southern Harmony and Musical Companion ( I knew this would be my number 1) 2. Shake your Money Maker (No bad songs) 3. Amorica (Some absolute classics on this album) 4. Three Snakes and One Charm 5. By your Side and Warpaint -(Average song score was exactly the same) 7. Lions (As Jamie and Pete say, not really memorable songs) 8. Before the Frost Nice work gentleman.

Caught the Lions tour, Space Hog opened on a small stage set up at the front of the Pavillion. Oasis had a good crowd and were damn good. The Black Crowes did a co-headliner comeback set list. Did three from the new one. The extended piano section of Descending, and other extended jams were magic. Best tour I caught for a B-, to C+ Lp at best. By Your Side has similar issues.. Eddie was a staple around here. If the Crowes were on a break and the D.C. Vipers were playing.....he might just be there. Thanks for all the shout outs. He was amazing.

The Tall Sessions Sweet Pickle Salad TONS of killer b-sides. There's a few from the By Your Side singles that are just as good, or even better, than what's on the actual album. It was interesting hearing Jim's picks as he came to the band later. I saw them open up for Heart and didn't give two shits about them until I heard the one and only time they played Struttin' Blues on the radio... then I was a fan. I was in into Humble Pie at the time and that song scratched that itch. Saw them on every tour until the Lions album and didn't see them again until Marc Ford returned to the band from which "Freak n Roll Into Fog" was taken from. I was at that run of shows, just not the night they recorded. Haven't seen them since though I have seen Marc Ford(only once though), CRB(twice) and The Magpie Salute(twice, I'm a Marc Ford fan. They played an Agitation Free song, Laila pt.2, on the first tour I saw).

Although that particular album has a couple songs on it that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. Here it goes. #8- Before the Frost #7- Warpaint #6- Lions #5- 3 Snakes 1 Charm #4- Amorica #3- Shake Your Moneymaker #2- Southern Harmony ( Remedy and Thorn In My Pride I absolutely love) #1- By Your Side

Love the Crowes, I have from the very beginning. Seen them numerous times, always a good show. Watched the rankings show in two parts, but good show. Here's how I would have ranked them with a couple of stand out songs for me . As what was said, there's not a bad album in the bunch. Pizza was a great reference. 8. Lions ( Soul Singing, Miracle to me) 7. Three Snakes & One Charm (Under a Mountain, Good Friday, Bring on, Bring on) The next six, I absolutely love. 6. Before the Frost... (Been a long time waiting on love, Appaloosa, I Ain't Hiding, Kept my Soul) Really gets tuff here. 5. Warpaint (Oh Josephine, Evergreen, Locust Street) 4.By Your Side (Go Faster, Kickin' My Heart Around, By Your Side, Only a Fool, Diamond Ring, Virtue & Vice) 3.The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion (Sting Me, Remedy, Thorn in my Pride, Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye, Sometimes Salvation) 2. Shake Your Money Maker ( Jealous Again, Sister Luck, Could I've been so Blind, Seeing Things, Hard to Handle, She Talks to Angels) I've never got tired of these songs. My number one always has been since they put it out. 1. Amorica ( Gone, Cursed Diamond, Nonfiction, She Gave Good Sunflower, Ballad in Urgency, Wiser Time, Descending) I absolutely love Descending. That's my picks, loved the show.

Always liked them, own a couple of album but never the biggest fan. Two of my best friend were huge fans and went to all the concerts When i first heard Remedy i thougt it was a cover of a '60 classic. Fantastic song. Don't make those anymore. Also own the live concert with Page. And now they tour with the guitar player from Earthless. Interesting.

saw them under a false name at a small club in Boston. Maybe 250 people...they also played 2 shows on the HORDE tour in MA. One at Great Woods which was very much a hits set and them the next night in Western Mass which was a blues set. My girlfriend at the time loved the hits show and hated the blues show. I thought that they were both fantastic

Alright, so here's the deal with me and the Black Crowes. I was ten years old when Shake your Money maker came out, I think. Until the following year or so, I didn't listen to any rock music made after 1972 or so, and even then, nothing very heavy (Hendrix for example was out of my purview, as he was a bit too raunchy for the local "oldies" station and my dad's record collection leaned more into jazz and classical). I had this friend growing up -- we did a lot of stuff together until we kind of started going our separate ways toward the end of highschool. Anyway, he was way more into the rock music of the time, and he played me that tape. To my surprise, I found that i really liked it -- and the reason, of course, is that it reminded me of some of the rock and soul kind of music from the 60s and early 70s I was already listening to. For my eleventh or twelfth birthday, he bought me The Southern harmony, and of course I liked that one a lot too. I got Amorica when it came out. But then, i started discovering all kinds of heavy rock and metal music, and sort of forgot about the Crowes, until quite recently. So I have a lot of catching up to do. Funny thing: this buddy of mine introduced me to the Crowes, Pearl jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and even metallica and Black Sabbath. By 1997 I was trying to get him to listen to Venom and Entombed albums. He probably regretted whatever the hell that was he had started. Quite a journey for a guy who as a kid wouldn't listen to anything heavier than Chuck Berry.

1-Amorica / 2-Southern... / 3- Shake Your... / 4-Lions / 5-By Your Side / 6-Three Snakes... / 7-Warpaint / 8-Before the Frost Jamie, Lions is awesome and it could be even better if "Young Man, Old Man" and "Cosmic Friend" were left out (just 11 tracks instead of 13) and if they've put "Cypress Tree" on the "A side" (the rockier one) and left "No Use Lying" and "Losing My Mind" on the "B side" (the mellow one) along with "Soul Singing", "Miracle to Me", "Lay It All On Me". Try it this way.

I’m a big BC fan but I wasn’t initially. I remember seeing the video for Hard to Handle and thinking “ just another band trying to be retro cool” . The lp grew on me over time as I delved into it but it wasn’t a great lp imo. Some great tracks but the lp as a whole was just ok . Now, when Southern Harmony came out, I bought it the week it came out thanks to the video for Remedy and it blew me away and I became a huge fan. Amorica was a bit underwhelming for me but a good lp. The 2 that I think are very very underrated are Lions and By Your Side. They got back to being a great rock band imo .

I got the Crowes' 1st album when it came out and it was a breath of fresh air ... But when Southern Harmony came out, they really became a top-favorite band for me - and they still are in my top-10 of all time (maybe even top-5?). "Remedy" can very well be my favorite song of all time ... I'm a genuine TBC fanatic, following them ever since the start, collecting all their outtakes, non-album tracks, live albums, bootlegs etc etc. I was fortunate to see them once, in July 1993, when they were on the Rock Werchter bill. I love everything they have released, though I have to point out that, if I make a top-20 of my favorite TBC songs, about 1/4 would be non-album tracks (like Title Song, Smile, Feathers etc). In fact, if you assemble their non-album tracks, you would have another excellent discography by itself ! For anyone who likes TBC and wants to dive into their catalogue a bit more, I would strongly suggest the "Lost Crowes" official release. I absolutely adore and utterly RESPECT the fact that throughout their career (until their recent "reunion") their concert setlists were ALWAYS varied, they always played obscure tracks (non-album or covers) and, if you realise it, they were ALWAYS ready to play a huge amount of songs - only a handful of bands did that !! Anyway, if I had to rank their official studio albums, my top 2 would be dead certain, as well as my bottom pick, but the rest could be interchangeable : 1. Southern Harmony And Musical Companion (UNDENIABLE!) 2. Amorica 3. Shake Your Moneymaker 4. Three Snakes And One Charm 5. By Your Side 6. Lions 7. Before The Frost/ Until The Freeze 8. Warpaint P.S. Great show by everyone on the panel ! Thank you all very much !

First time I was able to see the Black Crowes was during the Three Snakes tour with Govt Mule opening. I absolutely love this band, but admittedly, I think "Warpaint" was the last album I picked up upon release. Jamie Lazlo, I agree with you about "Lions." It followed up the amazing "By Your Side," so I tried to like it. I kept going why do I not like this? The songs just weren't connecting with me. 1. Southern Harmony and Musical Companion 2.
