I'd actually collected over 90% of the items on my first playthrough, including a healthy amount of energy tanks, but he *still* managed to kill me a number of times. Best thing about all these bosses was that, while they were incredibly tricky, each time I died, I got just a bit better at them. MercurySteam did a fantastic job with the difficulty in this game. It achieves a perfect balance of being incredibly difficult without being unfair about it. When you beat a boss like Raven Beak… you feel like you "earned" that ending.

For me, I think the only boss that I like more than Raven Beak is Nightmare in Fusion, just because of how creepy the entire fight is. From how you see Nightmare's shadow in the background for a while, then the glass is shattered the next time you're back in that zone, the music is creepy, and when you finally blast its face plate away you basically find yourself regretting it. Ridley in Super Metroid probably sits at a comfortable #3 for how you're practically flying through the air in order to properly fight him.

I think an underrated part of Dread's boss battle progression is how they do a really good job putting Samus' entire arsenal to the test. And with Raven Beak, I think you have to use every ability (except for the Phantom Cloak which or more for stealth) at least a few times before you get the win. He is a great looking boss, formidable and intimidating, he hits like a truck, and he tests the player to see how well they know the game.

@@WeirdVideoGames good point, you don't really use the grapple beam in the fight. Though to be fair, any time the game did utilize thr grapple beam for combat purposes, it felt kinda janky. This has not been confirmed and I still feel is false. The mini and fake Kraids in the past games have been stated to be imposters and not related to Kraid. Kraid probably has even stronger regenerative abilities considering he constantly does so (with his claws) in battle.

@@Guy-9 Actually, I think we can confirm that Kraid is truly dead, as it’s heavily implied he was consumed by an X parasite after they are released from Elun. This is further backed up when we see that Raven Beak’s X form is a mashup of all the bosses consumed by the X, with the most prominent details on the X form being from Kraid. But, I do think the Kraid we fight in Dread is the same Kraid.

7:43 For starters, it’s been stated in the prequel manga that Ridley can regenerate by eating raw flesh. That being said… Metroid 1/Zero Mission: His first canonical loss to Samus. He survives and is taken to Frigate Orpheon. Metroid Prime: He’s rebuilt into Meta Ridley aboard the Frigate Orpheon. After a battle with Samus, he falls into Phazon Mines and explodes. He still survives, and is infused with Phazon. Metroid Prime 3: His Phazon mutations lets him survive falling deep into a tunnel down to at least the mantle of the planet he’s on. He also survives being drained of Phazon at the end of his fight, with his shadow being spotted flying away for a split second. Metroid: Samus Returns: Depicted above, he’s slowly regenerating and using less cybernetics in the form of Proteus Ridley. It’s shown at the end that he survived the fight, shed his cybernetics and, still wounded, pursued Samus to Ceres Space Station. Proteus Ridley finally shows where the Prime trilogy fits into the Metroid timeline. Super Metroid: This is Ridley’s final defeat in Lower Norfair. Other M: A clone of Ridley is made by the Federation based on his DNA found on Samus’s Power Suit. In the defense of the Federation, they probably had no idea the DNA belonged to Ridley. This clone is drained of its life force by a Metroid Queen. Fusion: Clone Ridley’s remains are infected by X-Parasites. This one is probably fanservice. Dread: …Not here, outside of the 100% rewards depicting him in artwork. His final death would be in Fusion. So in total, Ridley was in 7 games.

Couple quick thoughts: 1.) Experiment Z-57 is Corpius. After exiting his arena, you can see him getting away in the background, and at some point in the game you can even see his corpse being experimented on. 2.) I'm not quite sure that actually is THE Kraid from Super Metroid. Remember in Super Metroid there was a younger Kraid before his fight, seems reasonable to assume there might be more out there. And even though I'm not the biggest fan of Ridley always being a boss, I would like to say that there are explanations for his appearances. In Metroid Prime his body was salvaged from 1 and "modified", thus becoming Meta-Ridley. You can sort of see him revert back to flesh in Samus Returns and then in Super Metroid he's back in all his glory. The one in Fusion was just a clone that was then infected by an X. So yeah technically Fan service but at least they bothered explaining it.
@syweb2
@syweb2 2 жыл бұрын
Corpius is too small to be Z-57, likely being a younger member of the species. I will agree that the one being experimented on is the very same one as the boss, and is being foreshadowed. I don't know if Super's Fake Kraid is a younger member of Kraid's species, but it's definitely smaller - given the Space Pirates weird technology (combined with Mother Brain's know-how) they probably either made a clone, or modified another being to resemble Kraid.

To be fair, even though Ridley "blows up" in every Metroid game, that's mostly a video game trope. Canonically, he didn't die in Zero Mission, was modified by the pirates to become Meta Ridley in Prime, still didn't die, became Omega Ridley in Prime 3, presumably was still Omega Ridley in Super Metroid where he self-destructs to try to kill Samus, finally dying. The Galactic Federation extracted Metroid DNA from Samus's suit in Other M, not knowing that Ridley's DNA was also present, creating a new Ridley. Metroids kill the new Ridley, and the Galactic Federation moved his corpse, presumably for study, where the X parasite copies Ridley in Metroid Fusion. So, Ridley officially died in Super Metroid, was cloned in Other M, and was just an X parasite in Fusion. How Kraid came back is yet to be explained.

Since you mentioned Raven Beak X being pretty much G5 from Resident Evil 2, it's also worth noting that Drogyga is not unlike a 2.5D version of the final Nemesis fight in the RE3make. Similar mechanic of stunning the boss so you can safely trigger devices on either side of the boss room that allow you to finally actually damage the boss. Though, in the case of the RE3make, it's so you can power up Paracelsus's Sword, as opposed to draining the water level, and there's no magnetic conveyor belt to transport you from one side to the other. But the overall mechanic of the fight is rather similar.

Raven Beak is probably the best boss in 2D gameplay I have ever fought against. Metroid Dread is perfect example of good balanced difficulty, not only in its boss fights, but also world design. It does help you where to go at all times, it prevents you getting lost and backtrack and make it feel a chore like some indie games struggle with, but also gives you room for explaration, searching for items and sequence break the order of things. Greatly accessible while maintaning that metroidvania hardcore flavour. Just great game design. Best Switch game after BOTW depending on your taste.

Ridley kept coming back because he can regenerate himself with the space pirate technology (hence his appearance in the prime games) and he can use bio-energy just to. Revive himself basically. Corpius does not have invisibility powers naturally! If you notice, whenever you get an aeon upgrade, you dont break a ball out of a chozo hand, you walk into a room where a statue holds a cube. When you walk into the corpius fight, samus looks up at a statue with an outstretched empty hand. Then, when you kill him, samus holds the ball in the tail while corpius dissolves, and it reveals one of the cubes! I can only guess that corpius ate the cube, but that doesn't really explain how it got in his tail.

I think it would have been especially cool if it was some sort of wyvern-like creature that can fly and the fight took place above the treetops, which would have made for a nice sequence of the fights- First you fight the mangled corpse of corpius who can only stalk around awkwardly, then the terrifying experiment Z-57 that creepily climbs around, and I think that it would have been a nice finishing fight to fight the original, real creature, powerfully flying around. That's just my idea though.

Yeah, about 60-70% of the comments on this video are about Z-57 being Corpius but I’m not totally sold on it. The art you get for 100% completion of the areas shows some of the Mawkin standing on top of a (presumably) dead Corpius, implying it’s definitely not a one of a kind organism. 7:44 From what I can tell, Ridley has regenerative powers (at least because of phazon, I think). He survived in Zero MIssion and was rebuilt into Meta-Ridley in Metroid Prime. In Prime 3 he's rebuilt again, gets mutated with phazon, and the 'explosion' is likely just for the gameplay. It would be weird to see him 'die' like that. In Metroid 2 3DS he's back as Meta Ridley again (canonizing the Prime games) and gets defeated again, but he leaves behind armor pieces as his body grows back. Then he gets genuinely killed by Samus on Zebes, and even if he survived that encounter again, he didn't survive the planet exploding. His corpse likely survived the fracturing of the planet and got mummified by space only to have his body rediscovered and brought back to BSL in Fusion where he was infected by an x parasite and brought back as a mutated boss. Also, pretty sure that that isn't Kraid and just another of its species. Kraid didn't have that belly thing nor the ability to expel strange larvae from there.

The first time I beat Kraid, I totally expected a rematch later in the game (like, a REAL one). I figured he wasn't dead because if lava could kill him, he wouldn't have been standing in it the entire fight or during captivity. I figured he was essentially just "flushed down the toilet" and was gonna return later and pissed as hell. *SPOILERS* Then when the X got loose I was like "Oh shit... Kraid is still out there waiting to get infected". I was SO sure there was going to be one last grand battle with him before reaching Raven Beak. In fact, it would have given some context as to how that ending got set up if Samus failed to kill the X Kraid on her way to Raven Beak and it fled, then they just crashed on top of or near that X.

Never thought of that, that'd have been cool but they'd have to make the fight radically different than the first fight to be worth it imo, which would be untread ground for Kraid. Not a bad idea in concept, but I think it would be hard to implement in an engaging way that didn't feel like padding

My rankings: 11: twin robot soldiers. They aren’t fun to fight, just run away until you can spam them with storm missiles. Hellish on dread mode 10: robot soldiers. Not as annoying, but they still feel like they take way longer to kill than they should. 9: Drogyga. Kinda boring and not really engaging in my opinion, but at least it’s not actively irritating to me. 8: Escue. I don’t find it’s attacks fun to dodge and it’s lightning armour is an inconvenience, but it’s fun to shinespark and screw attack it while it helplessly tries to do anything. 7: Chozo soldier. The first one on my list I like to fight in a normal playthrough. I like dodging it’s attacks, the finisher is cool and I like the concept. Not very difficult but interesting to me. 6: elite Chozo soldier. Breaking its shield will never *not* be satisfying, but that’s the only significant difference besides the belch move. 5: Golzuna. It’s super fun to shinespark and it’s bomb attacks are fun to dodge, too bad storm missiles trivialize it for me. 4: Corpius. A fun, interesting boss with fun attacks to dodge and it’s cloak gimmick is cool, especially since you don’t NEED to disable the cloak to continue dealing damage but doing so opens him up for loads of damage. 3: Kraid. Do I need to say anything? He’s a classic. His attacks are (again) fun to engage with and he’s satisfying to bring down. His bomb quick kill is also super good. 2: Experiment Z-57. One of the two legitimately difficult boss fights in the game for me, the only one to kill me more than 3 times on my dread mode playthrough besides raven beak. His attacks remind me a lot of diggernaut from samus returns and are super satisfying to dodge. Also the shinespark instakill, chef’s kiss. 1: Raven Beak. Obviously he’s my favourite. Lots of interesting attacks, multiple distinct phases, genuine difficulty. Phase 1 is different from other bosses, you can only properly deal damage by countering him, but you can do it in two counters if you mash beam fast enough, if you fail though his shield becomes invincible. Phase 2, his shield is broken and he sprouts wings, somehow. He’s a huge damage sponge in this phase though and it’s the least fun for me mostly because of the Gatling gun kind of attack. Phase 3, you shoot off one of his wings and his immediate response is to *rip off his other wing*. Similar to phase 1 but since he has no shield and he has some new moves, it feels and plays pretty differently. Killing him is super satisfying, and killing his X clone Dragon ball z style is always a good experience. Keep in mind this is my *opinion*, if anyone reading this has different opinions, that’s fine.

You gotta use your flash shift more often in boss battles. It's not absolutely essential for all boss battles but it makes most of them easier by giving you more time to get extra hits in. For example whenever Raven Beak spawns a black hole and you're far away and set a power bomb he does this move where he lasers the whole room except right next to him. Flash shift up to him to avoid that, get a few hits in, and by then it has recharged enough that you can flash shift away when he tries to stab you. Also helps you make distance from him when he tries to corner you. Wall jump, double/triple dash, and ready some missile locks before he even turns around.
@SergeantTeabag

With Golzuna, what I did was charge storm missiles while in front of it and then flash shifted over behind its back to pump it full of missiles. That, and you can deal a ton of damage by charging a shinespark in the room prior to it spawning. The first chozo robot can be killed with shinesparking. After that, storm missiles melt them. Chozo soldiers are fun to fight but were frustrating at first to figure out. If you sequence break, Escue can be cheesed with the screw attack and get significantly damaged with a shinespark. Drogyga is the Spore Spawn of Metroid Dread, but the fight was nice. It took me a little bit to understand, though. Corpius was pretty challenging on hard mode but was really fun to fight. Experiment Z-57 can be insta-killed with a shinespark in the second phase, which I found out after finishing the game the second time. Kraid was really fun to fight, as much as I've seen him through the series. I was pissing my pants over Raven Beak. It utilizes all of your abilities that you've picked up through the game and that's what I love the most about it. What a great way to finish the timeline.
