Ranking the Kanto Gym Leaders Weakest to Strongest

The Pokemon Gym Leaders. They are the ones you must test your might against if you want to make it to the Pokemon League and become the champion. So naturally you might think that they get progressively harder as you go along your journey. But that’s not true. There are so many different factors in everyone’s journey that could make them feel one gym leader is harder to take on versus another. That’s why today, I’ve decided to do some research and rank some of these gym leaders from easiest to hardest. And I figured the best place to start is with the OG games in the series, Pokemon Red and Blue. When creating this list, I took a couple different things into consideration such as the Pokemon you’ll be up against vs the selection of Pokemon you have available to you at that point in the game, as well as the moves available to you vs the moves on their Pokemon. Just because a gym leader has a level 47 Pokemon doesn’t necessarily mean they’re hard to beat at all. I mean, the classic meme we know the most is how tough Whitney and her Miltank are, and she’s only the 3rd gym leader in Johto! So yeah with that all being laid out, I hope you guys enjoy this ranking list, as it’s not based solely on my opinion. With that being said, let’s hop right into battle with the Kanto Gym Leaders.

I have a slightly different opinion, but only with one major change: 1. Surge: Insert everything you said here. 2. Brock: You beat Surge easily without having to rely on a good starter choice. Brock with Charmander is another story, and grinding up a Caterpie is almost like being overleveled at that point. 3. Blaine: Insert everything you said here. But Roar didn't have any effect in Gen1, so it makes it even easier. 4. Erika: You forgot that before battling Erika, you can get HM Fly. This makes everything a lot easier, since Fearow and Pidgeot are both quite fast and Bind won't hit first. 5. Giovanni: Insert everything you said here. 6. Koga: His Pokemon know Smoke Screen and Minimize. Do I need to say anything else? 7. Misty: Insert everything you said here. 8. Sabrina: Insert everything you said here.

As a note: Fissure on Giovanni's Rhydon is a virtual non-factor as OHKO moves automatically fail if you'e slower than the opponent, and Rhydon's one of the slowest in the game. Unless you're paralyzed or using something like Slowpoke, you've got nothing to worry about, especially if you're using Haunter or Gengar.

Hey Mystic, might I offer a suggestion for future videos? I would love to see you slow down your commentary and give yourself a bit more time to enunciate and make sure everything you're trying to say comes off more clearly. It'll make creating your commentary a little easier, and easier to understand, especially for your fans who don't speak English as fluently as others. It's most noticeable during your intro, particularly when promoting your 2nd channel. Just thought I'd leave that there. Love your content!

I think Erica isn't as hard as you're giving her credit for. You seem to forget that as soon as you get to Celadon City, your team's power goes up a lot with all the TMs you gain access to. You can immediately go get the Fly HM, so you don't have to worry about not having Drill Peck or Wing Attack, and you also get Ice Beam, and you can give some water to the guard and go to Saffron to get Psychic as well. The easiest thing to do is just teach Fly to whatever bird you have, and just use that to one-shot all her pokemon. I think Koga and Erica should switch places on the list.
@MrCozzdogg
@MrCozzdogg 5 жыл бұрын
If Psychic was weak to Ghost type in Gen 1, I don't think it would make a difference as Lick is the only Ghost type move you get that is Super-effective and it's Base Power is 20. Also Gastly, Haunter and Gengar would be weak to Sabrina's Psychic type moves. Great video though loved the content!
@wschippr1
@wschippr1 5 жыл бұрын
If scyther or pinsir had decent STAB options Sabrina would be easy. Or basically if any Pokémon had good bug coverage. If you rom hack the game and make slash a bug type psychics become a lot less broken.
@MrCozzdogg
@MrCozzdogg 5 жыл бұрын
If you really want that super effective hit without Beedrill on the Psychic gym I suppose you could go for Jolteon with Pin Missile. But that's not even a great strategy.
@wschippr1
@wschippr1 5 жыл бұрын
MrCozzdogg Thunderbolt, on average, does more damage than pin missile on jolteon to psychic types. Pin missile is usually ran on jolteon in Gen I to deal with grass types that resist electric attacks (and since bug is super effective against poison types in Gen I it hits everyone of them super effectively). But ya, that’s why psychic was so busted, jolteon is probably the best user of a bug type move in the game and even it doesn’t use it on psychic types (barring exeggutor).
@MrCozzdogg
@MrCozzdogg 5 жыл бұрын
@@wschippr1 well yeah but I did say for that super effective hit not more damage but I know what you're saying. I mean why you wouldn't do Tbolt still would have me stumped. Maybe if they wanted to save pp but Idk what for.

Sabrina's Alakazam was pretty bonkers. The heal or recover move that gets back all Alakazam's hit points makes it really tough. I did it with Kadabra with a normal attack, as well as some others to put the Alakazam to sleep etc. (but this time I will use "body slam" instead of Mega Punch). I really like how Kadabra's stupidly high special and resistance to psychic types makes it one of the few good enough to battle Alakazam for a multiple turns, until the Alakazam is knocked out. I have not finished the game (only free online and many years later).

The one thing you forgot to mention is that you can get the HM move Fly before taking on Erica. Thus, flying types can wreak damage to her grass types easily. As far as Koga goes, Kadabra/Akakazam could destroy his team in seconds. Psychic all the way til you win. Good video.

idk if i would move erika to an easier spot, but it is notable that her gym is right next to the cycling road, above which you get the free HM fly, so those flying type moves are VERY much on the table and u can grab a doudo on the route if u didnt have a bird to use it with

Fun fact about Erika that I discovered as a kid. If you send out a grass pokemon she'll continue to use "sleep powder" over and over. You can't put a grass type to sleep. Vic and Via were never a problem once I discovered that bug... I think it's a bug? It always worked for me in both games. Probably the only reason I was able to beat her at that point in the game.

Brock is super annoying in Yellow with Pikachu; best option is to opt for Mankey early on. Misty is very difficult as she can be a speedrun killer with RNG.

Yeah... I kind of agree. I remember how many times Erika, Misty, and Sabrina made me repeat their matches. I usually got Misty in two or three tries, but Erika and Sabrina usually caught me flatfooted way more often then Misty. The only thing I'd change is switching Erika's and Misty's positions, if only because I found Erika more difficult than Misty. But that might just be me.

So it's funny you brought up how Wrap used to work in Gen 1 and all the nasty things you can do with it, because honestly you can take Misty down quite easily with all that in mind as Bellsprout learns Wrap at level 13 and then Poison Powder at level 15. Then again, being exclusive to Blue probably puts a damper on it, but hey, that option is there.

Blaine was definitely the easiest. Fire types in Gen 1 were pretty weak all around outside of speed. Lots of them had good *attack* but not great special. Doubly bad when water was also special! Definitely agree with Misty and Sabrina being the hardest. I died a bajillion times to Misty having not been lucky enough to get a Pikachu and having Squirtle as my starter. Sabrina I was able to brute force with Snorlax thanks to the Abra line's abysmal defense, but I never had a type advantage and it was a slog having to Rest up a few times during the battle.

I find the easiest way to deal with Misty is to buy the magikarp, level it to Gyarados. His attack is insane so you can rinse both of them with bite, or feel free to give to give gyarados bodyslam. It's also viable vs Sabrina bc its hi special and hp allowmit to tank the psychic attacks pretty well

I dunno.... Misty's Staryu is a cakewalk and then all you need to do is land a successful Thunder Wave on Starmie and she becomes much easier to handle. Or if you're using Squirtle, you probably have a Wartortle by now and Mega Punch makes things pretty easy too. Blaine can possibly be a bit harder because of Fire Spin, considering it works the same way as Wrap. Also, I never really had that much trouble with Erika. I dunno, maybe it's because I've always had Charmeleon instead of the others, but I always thought Koga was harder purely because of the sudden level spike

@DigitalxGamer
@DigitalxGamer 5 жыл бұрын
@@azelfdaboi5265 Even if that were the case, I'd think she may actually be EASIER if you use Bulbasaur. Because Bulbasaur's a Grass/Poison type, she will try to spam you with Poison attacks because Gen I AI is garbage and thinks that Poison is the best Type of move to use. Because her Grass-type moves will be 1/4 effective. Problem being...said attack is Poison Powder. So she will keep using Poison Powder. Which will fail every time because Poison types can't be Poisoned. That's just how the Gen I higher-level AI works. All that matters to them is the Type of move that it's using. If they have a move type that is super effective against your Pokemon's primary type, they will prioritize it. And if their move is Not Very Effective, they will avoid using it unless all move types are Not Very Effective. However, there's a catch here. The game sees that Bulbasaur's primary type is Grass. Therefore, it will prioritize a Poison-type move. Because all the AI is seeing is that you're a Grass-type and Poison is Super Effective against Grass. So, they prioritize it...even if it has no effect in the end because you are ALSO a Poison-type. As such, it's rare for the Victreebel to even USE Wrap against a Grass/Poison type, even though it's in its moveset. Because it will prioritize the Poison-type move in its arsenal.
