I read a lot of comments online from people who are interested in the big King Crimson box sets but can't afford to buy them all and aren't sure where to start. This is the first of three videos intended to offer my own thoughts on a suggested priority list, for broke fans who want the best Crimson experience for their money. In the first installment I give some background on the video, then discuss why Starless should be your first purchase.
00:00 Why this video?
05:21 A few caveats
10:01 Why no Exposures?
10:58 #1: Starless
17:22 Why not Road to Red?
18:13 Outro

Thanks for letting me know about In the Court of King Crimson. I have a lot of these sets but didn't have the time I thought to dissect the live stuff so I wanted to make a compilation, which, is a struggle in terms finding the "right" performances.

I used to listen them tens or hundered times but I have only some of their studio editions so I am happy to know I could reach for much more different interpretations. Thank You for valuable talk about .

I whole heartedly agree. I was lucky enough to catch the Wetton-Cross- Bruford era band in San Antonio three times In 73/74 (when I discovered they had used my photo from the Oct. 5th 73 show on the Bonus disc 2-Audio Curios picture disc I felt very lucky to say the least). Of the hundreds of bands I’ve seen play live no one could best this crew in my humble opinion. They were all virtuosos.

Awesome! I'm sure the recordings are a shadow of the experience but it makes me glad they left so much recorded material from the time for people like me who weren't around.

I'm interested in the Islands box set and I'll need to research it. This particular line up of King Crimson toured in 71' and 72'. In 1971 they were performing songs like "CIRKUS", "LADY OF THE DANCING WATER", "THE SAILOR'S TALE", GROON" "IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING" and for example the 71' concert at Plymouth came across as a serious attempt at Progressive Rock and King Crimson all the way. The 1972 shows were not like that. They began jamming more in an R&B style . A good example would be EARTHBOUND. It almost sounds like a completely different band at times. They play "IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING " in a Blues style of Muddy Waters. It seemed as if Wallace, Burrell, and Collins took over the band and that Fripp was going along with it for whatever reason? Not at all like the 1971 performances . Wallace, Burrell, and Collins ended up doing an album with Alexis Korner. Oddly enough all three of them worked with Fripp to form instrumental arrangements of what later became "LARKS TONGUES IN ASPIC PART I" and "LAMENT".

This prompted me to think which I would rank #1, and it would either be Starless or Sailor’s Tales. The latter was something of a surprise, as I was under the impression that there were so few decent live recordings, but seemingly not. Look forward to parts 2 and 3.

Yeah the volume of stuff on Sailor's was a surprise to me as well. And the sound quality is quite good too considering the source.

I have them all and agree with your rankings. Have you had the opportunity to pick up a copy of Fripp's box set "Exposure"? I had the luck of seeing the 73 tour and amazing how the audience connected with what was being improvised. My 1st exposure, no pun intended, to recordings of that tour was bootlegs and the 1st 4 CD box set the Great Deceiver, which I spent hours with and still consider if my listening time is limited I pull that set out and indulge in the magic. Great video and your knowledge is refreshing. I also interviewed Sid when he published the 1st edition of his book via the internet in 2001 for an on line progressive magazine. Cheers!

Thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated! I don't quite have the money for Exposures at this time sadly. I happened to pick all these up during a windfall period.

After thinking it over for a while I decided to purchase three of the boxes. I chose Sailor's Tales, Starless, and Heaven and Earth. I feel like these three have the most diversity as far as live improv. I love the double trio as well but there's not as much variety so I'm happy with the Thrak album and a couple of live sets. Same for the 80s band. I would have purchased the Lark's box if the sound wasn't uniformly substandard.

Yeah I think that's my 1, 3 and 4 so we're pretty much on the same page. I agree about the sound quality on Larks -- it surprised me that the Sailor's Tales gigs generally sound better.

@@electricbrainelectricshado9490 The 1971 gigs sound the best on Tales. I don't know the reason for the poor recorded sound on the '72 material in both boxes.

How much listening do you do on a typical day?
@electricbrainelectricshado9490
@electricbrainelectricshado9490 2 жыл бұрын
Aw man, depends on what type of stuff I have to do at my day job, whether I'm driving, and how much work I'm doing on my own music. Somewhere between 0 and 10 hours I suppose.

Nice little summation, but you're not doing your credibility any favors by hanging out at Regressive Ears :)

Where do you recommend hanging out instead? The FB groups mostly seem to be people posting songs I've heard a million times, and Discord gave me a headache.

@@electricbrainelectricshado9490 I would recommend you follow your own path, and ignore those of a bunch of narrow-minded, laser-focused, childish, petulant, ignorant and downright stupid 50 and 60 + year olds who (a) have very bad musical tastes, (b) don't know the meaning of the word "progressive", (c) couldn't get out of their own way if their lives depended on it and (d) continue to care mostly about bands like Yes and Genesis, who were long past their sell by dates decades ago. I personally know jazz music from the 1930s that is more progressive than the crap most of those idiots listen to, and none of it is "fusion", which they somehow think is "prog rock". As a matter of fact, if one of them ever went up to Stanley Clarke and called his music "prog", Stan would laugh, biff him on the forehead and drag his ass to a Scientology lecture ;)

The $500 Exposure Box Set. Ok not quite $500, but nonetheless someone (Singleton?) needs $$. I was joking with some people, and then the Speaking Tour happens. So its def. Singleton then

Sailor's tales fell off the map. I looked on ebay, Discogs, etc and no one is selling it. There was one way overpriced, but that's it.
