Sending well wishes Pete. My top 10 Priest picks and favorite cuts: 1. Defenders of the Faith (I picked this as #1 because I heard it all the way back in 1990, way before I heard any other songs by them, of the balance between the extreme metal and the hard rock styles it incorporates at different points throughout the album. Jawbreaker, Eat Me Alive, Freewheel Burning, The Sentinel, Love Bites, man even Some Heads Are Gonna Roll, my faaaaaaavorite song as a kid) 2. Screaming for Vengeance (The runner-up for me. Guitar work on this album is an 80s metal clinic. Never need to hear You've Got Another Thing Coming on the radio again, the rest of the album is gold. Take These Chains, Devil's Child, The Hellion/Electric Eye, Screaming for Vengeance, Riding On the Wind) 3. Painkiller (The revenge album after the PMRC era. The nightly news media had turned against the band, and the band fired back with a statement of an album. For my money, some of Rob Halford's best vocal performances ever. Includes my all-time favorite Judas Priest song A Touch of Evil, Painkiller, Leather Rebel, Metal Meltdown, All Guns Blazing) 4. Sad Wings of Destiny (Has one of their galloping early tracks Genocide, way up there for me, along with the no-brainer of a favorite Victim of Changes, Island of Domination, Dreamer Deceiver, love the track Tyrant, etc.) 5. British Steel (This used to rank higher but over time other albums eclipsed it. Living After Midnight I never need to hear on the radio again. United is in my Top 10 tracks by the band, other favorites include Metal Gods, Grinder, The Rage, and You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise) 6. Firepower (One of my favorite sounding metal albums ever. Could rank even higher as time goes on. I could go on all day listing favorites from this one, for now I'll settle with Traitors Gate, Children of the Sun (SO catchy), Evil Never Dies, Flamethrower, Spectre, and the opener Firepower.) 7. Stained Class (Disclaimer: I haven't heard this album as much as others. It's probably better than 7th. They have a lot of great albums, and it just happened to make it here. Beyond the Realms of Death, Exciter, Invader, Better By You, Better Than Me) 8. Hell Bent for Leather (Good album in general, in my opinion no real high point or low point that overshadows anything on the album. Consistent front to back. Take On the World, Delivering the Goods, always enjoyed the title track Hell Bent for Leather, and Killing Machine) 9. Point of Entry (For Hot Rockin' alone this has to be in my top 10. Always dug Heading Out to the Highway. Troubleshooter is awesome. Solar Angels is a classic.) 10. Angel of Retribution (Very strong album by them. Angel is one of my favorites on here. Lochness, Worth Fighting For and Revolution are my other picks.)

Funny story on Turbo. I was sixteen when I bought the cassette in '86. My football team was working a fundraiser at our ballpark over the summer and the DJ took a break and told me to play some tunes while he was out. Of course I run over to my car, grab my cassette, and absolutely BLAST it on the stadium PA system!! My buddies and I rocked it out for most of the album. To this day I love this album....can still here Locked In and Turbo Lover echoing downtown! 😆

My introduction to Judas Priest was through my boss when I was about 16 or 17. Interestingly, he played Turbo all the time and I liked it. My first Priest album was Priest...Live! which featured a number of Turbo songs, as well as several classics. So...I jumped right on Ram It Down when it came out...and my bubble burst. I ended up retro-filling my Priest collection and didn't follow them forward. Sometimes it's what you hear first that hooks you and even as you explore the catalog what you first heard remains interesting to you.

A special shout-out to the title track from "Stained Class". The album itself is also my favorite JP album, but it seems like the title track doesn't often get the attention I feel it deserves. Blisteringly fierce, with some of Halford's best lyrics ever.
@rushshukla46362 жыл бұрын
I've never understood why they never play the song Stained Class live. It's one of their most important songs and lyrically like you state is of their best ever. I can only speculate Rob cannot sing in that high register anymore. But then why don't they just tune down or maybe they did and the vocals fall flat like many bands realise so they probably left it off for good reason, who knows?
@dougcarson52022 жыл бұрын
@@rushshukla4636 I'm thinking that one of the reasons they choose not to play it live is that is indeed the difficulty of pulling off the vocals. Besides the challenge of the very high register, they are also very densely packed in parts. Nonetheless, Halford did play this song live with his band "Halford" back around 2001. Here's a link to a fantastic version they did back then, in case you have not discovered this yet. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bN-cjZp0rqiak4U.html

@@dougcarson5202 Excellent stuff. Yeah thanks for the link I really enjoyed that! Stained Class is probably my fave Priest song although there's so many. I've seen them also do Jawbreaker if you can find it. But yeah Rob's 70 now and needs a teleprompter which is why he's always walking around the stage with his head down. They should call it a day tbh, I think they're in danger of destroying their legacy coz it's just a cabaret act now with neither KK or Glenn present.

'Stained Class' #1, YES! 'Hell Bent for Leather', 'Sad Wings....', and 'Sin After Sin' are all close seconds, but IMO 1982's 'Screaming for Vengence' was the last great Preist album for many years. Today I love the new stuff, but still not as much as 1974 - 1982. To give you some perspective, I graduated HS in 1980 (the year of 'British Steel'), and I did love and play the hell out of 'Point of Entry' the following year. I saw every tour between 1980 and 1990. Those concerts were soooo great. I recall a show in '88 where I was so jacked to hear them do 'Beyond the Realms of Death'. Great memories. Thanks Pete.

Sorry to hear about your Father-In-Law Pete, and I hope he gets well soon and All The Best to You and Your Family. My favourite Judas Priest album is British Steel hands down! Every Track is a Killer and Excellent! Saw them do this whole album live on the 30th Anniversary Tour of British Steel! I have British Steel on both 8-Track Tape Cartridge and CD! The 8-Track still plays well! I bought the CD so I do not wear out the 8-Track! Living After Midnight is my favourite Judas Priest song! I can listen to British Steel from beginning to the end with no issues and play it again a few more times! I never get bored or tired of it! It has to be their best selling album of all time! 👍🤘😎🎸🎸🥁🎙🎤🎼🎵🎶🎛🎛

My list: Painkiller Sad Wings Screaming for Vengeance Stained Class Hell Bent for Leather Defenders of the Faith Sin After Sin British Steel Firepower Angel of Retribution Turbo Rocka Rolla Point of Entry Redeemer of Souls Ram It Down Jugulator Nostradamus Demolition On a side note, I remember that for the longest time, Best Buy could not sell the big LP boxset of Nostradamus even at a discount. Ditto for the Queen/Paul Rogers album. It also seemed to be the only new records they had in the late 2000's for some bizarre reason.

During their golden age of commercial success (1980-1986, I think), their early studio albums were a little bit forgotten. But then, with the pass of time, albums like Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin after Sin, Stained Class, Killing Machine became cult classics of Heavy Metal and rock history. I love British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith (this one is my favorite from this period, probably underrated), but the other albums I mentioned before are just from another world. Complete and undeniable masterpieces. I wish they could bring way more attention to their classics from this albums while touring. I know many people that after discovering the early Priest, they said that was their best time.

Wow, for the most part, I thought you were in my head. I've always been a huge Priest fan, but when Halford left, I never got fully engaged. Screamin was my 2nd concert ever, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I was going through old ticket stubs, and realized I saw them on the Turbo tour. I guess that tells you how memorable that was. I missed Defenders of the faith because I didn't hear about it until the day after. I could get on board with your rankings overall, but I would probably move Point of Entry up a little. I've only heard a couple of tracks off of Firepower, but I like what I've heard. I need to check their last 2 out based on what you said. Your taste and mine seem to line up well.

Good video SoT. I agree that 'Stained Class' deserves a No:1 ranking. Favorite JP song on the album? Can't separate them....it's a trilogy of 'Saints in Hell, 'Savage' and 'Beyond the Realms'...Priest at the top of their game.... Agree with a previous comment that the album you hear first of a band tends to be your favorite. First song I heard was Burnin Up' and that was it....I would rate 'Killing Machine' as my no: 2 then 'Sad Wings'....Brilliant.

Hey,Pete! Been really enjoying your channel awhile and just sub'd,at last😃 Love your reviews and retrospectives. They are so raw, honest and low key. Just awesome! And I'm totally on board with almost all of them🤘 Well,I also have a request: I'm a big fan of german heavy/prog-act ELOY. Their catalogue are a little hit and miss, but they've got som good efforts. Would dig if you could do a retro-/review of them! Rock on, and keep them great videos going🤘 Hails from Morten, Norway.

Very good list! IMHO, "Firepower" should have been ranked a few notches higher because it's an absolutely blistering album from start to finish. Not only does that album rank very close to their classic albums from the late 70's to early 80's, but has some of the best guitar playing by Richie Faulkner and Glenn Tipton. The best Priest album in more than 20+ years!

I'd have a hard time ranking Priest, but like you, I don't have the Ripper albums because they're so hard to find. I do really like Nostradamus, but perhaps for different reasons than others. I bought it when it came out (my first Priest album bought on release date), and inside the album came a voucher for a free lawn ticket to any show on the then current tour, while supplies lasted. I immediately went to the family computer and redeemed my ticket, with the knowledge that I had no way of driving to the show--parents would never have let me drive the car to the city. Eventually found a friend who also redeemed a free ticket (and also had his own car). This was the Testament/Motorhead/Heaven And Hell/Priest tour of 2008. One of the best shows I've ever been to, and it was free. And that's why I like Nostradamus so much.

I love Point of Entry. It's one of the very few albums that I can listen to right through without skipping a track. On the Screaming for Vengeance tour, they opened the show with Solar Angels and it just blew the audience away.

Great video. I wish your father-in-law all the best in his recovery. My top three is actually the same, which was quite an interesting coincidence. Stained Class will always be my #1, that's some great stuff there. Depending on the day, I might put Sin After Sin and Sad Wings into any order, but they both remain in top three. There's such legendary songs on those, just gets me every time. Awesome trio! My next favorite is Defenders of the Faith, that's also such a powerful album. Killing Machine comes fifth, followed by Painkiller and Screaming for Vengeance. As much as I love British Steel, it drops to eigth place since it's quite overplayed. Angel of Retribution is one of the best comeback albums of all-time and Firepower shows the band still going strong. Those two fill my top ten.

Who didn't? It's a MASTERPIECE but imagine if they tweaked the sound quality like KISS did with ALIVE! Another sadly underrated live album is AC/DC's ....IF YOU WANT BLOOD.
