Hall of Fame would rather have pop, r&b, country, and techno one hit wonders get in year after year before any actual rock with any meaning whatsoever. It's a miracle AC/DC even made it in.

Scott Basler They have improved some over the past 5 years . Steve Miller , the Zombies , Moody Blues , Roxy Music , Doobie Bros , TRex , ELO are worthy Inductees . . . Steppenwolf was on the ballot one year . Got 100 k votes but didn’t make it . Maybe they will get nominated again .

@@dagnabbit6187 I think a big problem with Steppenwolf is that they were real big for a few years and then cooled off but never could make a comeback..bands like Steve Miller Moody Blues etc..all made a comeback..

John Smith There is also the problem of the original lineup. One time they did Steppenwolf gigs without John Kay . John contested it & finally agreed to it on condition they sign over the royalties from there on out and as John put it. “ And they walked right into my trap !” For induction it would be awkward . Another person made a point to me “ Steppenwolf really wasn’t that influential.” Well image wise John”s look was but music wise as good as they were, guy had a point .

John Kay and Steppenwolf was and still are my spiritual heroes. I have seen them as The Sparrow in Toronto in my rebellious years and have followed them through time and name change. Their performances are amazing and all and I mean ALL of the music is the best ! I start my day listening to them and I finish my day with listening to them. I have so much to choose from and I set my mood from my vast collection. I am addicted to Steppenwolf and I feel great. Just thought I would share this with you all. 🇨🇦😎👍

Funny, you list each song from "7" except for Earschplittenloudenboomer... I was waiting for how you would pronounce it. They were a really great band but like you point out, they were travelling Faster Than the Speed of Light and no band can survive such a pace. 1. The Second 2. Steppenwolf 3. For Ladies Only 4. Steppenwolf 7 5. Monster 6. Slow Flux 7. Skullduggery 8. Wolftracks 9. At Your Birthday Party 10. Hour of the Wolf 11. Paradox 12. Feed the Fire 13. Rock & Roll Rebels There is also Rise & Shine that I do not have. John Kay also released a number of solo albums that are far less heavy than the band's albums, they try to show him as a songwriter. He is a very interesting and intelligent guy but his best musical output were those 7 albums on the top of my list. The deep cuts are almost equal to the better known songs throughout. None of the lesser albums is really bad.

I always figured they called it Steppenwolf 7 because they were including the two live LPs (Early Steppenwolf & Steppenwolf Live) that were both released before it as part of the discography. So that would indeed make it the seventh LP. My top five : 1) Monster 2) 7 3) For Ladies Only 4) the first 5) Slow Flux (I used to detest it and over the years I've realized how great it is!).

Outside of the obvious 60s "hits", Skullduggery was the album that introduced me to Steppenwolf when I was 8 years old. My brother brought it home after work one day and cranked it. And he bought another one the next day that resonated more with me, which was Boston's debut, both released around the same time.

JT Michaelson Bobby Cochran’s only album with them. It was their last of the three reunion albums. But the two before it! They are among their best ever! Slow Flux was their reunion album then Hour of the Wolf. It contains Mr. Penny Pincher! One of my faves by them and you can see that song in all its glory on this channel, You Tube, 😉 All the old albums on ABC Dunhill are classics in their own right. As a kid in the 6o’s they were a big part of our lives. Nice to see other people getting into them, among thousands of others.

Listen to some Scheavy or some Wolfstooth!! Radio music sucks as does all “classic rock” they should call it “ People that stoped growing musically at 22 and music for people that don’t have a clue rock”. Yeah, I bought the first Boston album along with everything else that came out on Tuesday’s. I averaged four albums a week. Some weeks I bought up to 10, 11 on Tuesday’s. Six months after that album came out it went to the back of the pile. Why bother, it was everywhere and became a part of that corporate rock bullshit! No attitude, bunch of fuckin’ Boston whimps that kept using the same melody for the next 20 years! Five years between albums and the second album was what 28 mins long?? Put the First Ramones or Dead Boys albums on. Wake up, smell the rock! Listen to my bands The Beast- Power Metal ep. Or Born To Metalize!! Listen to Glorionblak- touch of the wild! Or 1000 Years!

Then again, I love "7" and I'm glad you had it and number 1. Steppenwolf were HUGE in the late 60's early 70's, had of course the big songs that everyone knows but they recorded so so many other great tunes. They were locked into a contract that required them to write, record and tour in support of two albums a year and that burned them out! I often wonder what things would've sounded like if they were able to keep the original lineup together longer than the first two albums, they always had great players but that original lineup had the classic Steppenwolf sound. They also had some good stuff from 1974-1976, look on here for "Steppenwolf Don Kirschner's Rock Concert" they are on here with the "Slow Flux" tour and "Hour of the Wolf" tour and they rocked them both. The reason why the 7th album is called the 7th album is because there are some albums you never touched on, it went like this: 1. Steppenwolf 2. Steppenwolf the 2nd 3. At your Birthday Party 4. Early Steppenwolf (which was actually the Sparrow recorded live and they ALSO rocked!) 5. Monster 6. Steppenwolf Live (can't believe you didn't mention this one) 7.Steppenwolf 7 8. For Ladies only So that's why it is called the "7th" album They all freaking rock, every album has at least a few GREAT tunes on them, MUCH MORE than the two big hits that you only hear from them now, WAY MORE than that!!!!! And Stephen Stills said about them "they were scary because live they were as good as or better than the Stones".

I liked John Kay & Steppenwolf 1) *Rock & Roll Rebels* 2) *Rise & Shine* 3) *Live At 50* 4) Early *Sparrow's live recording* that had a 23 minute *The Pusher.* 5) *Greatest Hits* compilation album for early Steppenwolf tracks. Saw them at a BBQ Rib Fest after the release of *Rise & Shine.* They played two sets. Except for *Born To Be Wild* & *Magic Carpet Ride* being played at both sets. Both had a different playlist. 2nd set had *The Pusher* & *The Wall* & *Rock 'N Roll War* (3 favourite Steppenwolf tunes) from *Rise & Shine.* Not a bad show for being free.

I absolutely enjoy your videos. You've helped me gain a lot of insight when selecting bands to study their entire catalogs. I've been studying Steppenwolf the last few years and where I see your placement of At Your Birthday Party low on this ranking, I totally fell in love with this album as drummer Jerry Edmonton sings TWO songs on AYBP. When I heard these two songs I had no idea who was singing and simply became enamored with the idea that there was a second vocalist in the band who I felt was the best secondary vocalist in the band next to John Kay. Jerry's singing really brings a full circle to Steppenwolf vocals in my opinion. A very musically sweet contrast to Kays low gritty message bringing. Too bad he didn't sing lead vocals on more albums and especially sad he left earth far too soon. Thanks again Pete. You WROCK dude.

Love Steppenwolf and agree they should be in the Rock Hall of Fame. My favourite album of theirs is At Your Birthday Party... great songs that effortlessly sustain a coherent mood ...Don't Cry, Jupiter Child, It's Never Too Late, Rock Me, Lovely Meter, She'll Be Better, and a great ending with the sad Happy Birthday..and the original gatefold cover is the best of all their albums... when I want to remember what it felt like to walk into a head shop in 1969 or 1970, this album (music and cover) for me evokes better than any other that flashback of patchouli oil, buddha bells, double O ring belts, and the feeling that the world we had inhabited in the early 60s was unravelling.... but unravelling accompanied by great art and music.

You were incorrect when you said Steppenwolf 7 was not their seventh album; it was. 1. Steppenwolf 2. Steppenwolf The Second 3. At Your Birthday Party 4. Early Steppenwolf 5. Monster 6. Steppenwolf Live 7. Steppenwolf 7 8. For Ladies Only 9. Slow Flux 10. Hour of the Wolf 11. Skullduggery I'm a huge Steppenwolf fan and pretty much agree with your order. Steppenwolf 7 is their finest album.

I was always so happy with my copy of "16 Greatest Hits" that I never explored the band further. But it's an irreducible minimum, and I have always suspected that I was missing a lot of good stuff from the albums.

I agree with your list Pete, except I would flip your number 1 and 2. I bought the Steppenwolf debut in 68 on 8 track and played the shit out of it in my car and house. Not a bad cut on that album. Have bought all of their releases since then. Love Steppenwolf.

It is hard to rank their albums as the top 5 are all pretty equal in quality, while not all sounding the same.John Kay is one of the most underrated frontman/singers.Top 5 in a fluctuating order. 1.Second 2.Steppenwolf (debut) 3.Slow Flux 4.7 5.Monster
