During WR's sixteen year existence, the genius of each musician who came and went was monumental. I didn't like jazz fusion until a friend INSISTED I listen to WR. My "let's get this over with" attitude disappeared quickly and now I've collected (almost) everything of theirs. Thanks for the groovy show, Pete and Chuck!

I discovered SoT in late 2019/early 2020 and really delved deeper into the catalog once the lockdown hit. So for the better part of 4 years, I've been learning more about bands I already loved and learning to love new bands. I go "thrifting" for music nearly every day and years ago, picked up Heavy Weather for a dollar. Listened to it a couple times but never thought much about it. Two weeks ago, I found Mysterious Traveler for 25 cents. One thing I've been doing since discovering SoT is when I find one of these albums that I know Pete and company have discussed here on the channel, I'll search a video discussing that band's discography to see if I've picked up a stem or a gem. So in finding Mysterious Traveler the other day, I'm pleased to hear Chuck rank it #2 and Pete has it at #6. It appears this time I found a gem and can't wait to dive into it. Thanks for all these videos, Pete. You do a great job and provide a much-needed resource for music lovers.

Phenomenal episode. No one talks about WP anymore and they should. Black Market, Heavy Weather and Night Passage are masterpieces of the jazz fusion genre. Without Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, not sure they would exist, but thank God they do.

Right at the height of my liking Weather Report (1974, Mysterious Traveller) they played a free Columbia Records showcase concert at SPAC that September! So I got to see them that one time only. Played some from that album and their setup on stage was cool because the drums were set up on the right side, facing in so we got a sideways view of the drummer. Joe had banks of keyboards surrounding him. Very cool. Oddly, this show had them (among others) opening for Blue Oyster Cult! ok? It worked for me!

Speechless used to be a favorite track of mine on the 80,s “weather report” album. A doleful, suspenseful sound. Now it give me the chills, as a musical comment by Zawinul, on Pastorius’s death, Pastorius was beaten to death in a bar fight. The last bars of “ speechless’ ,the 10 blows.

Great show guys. I love all the different incarnations of Weather Report in the 1970's. Every lineup brought a different kind of magic to the table. Their live performance of "A remark you made" from Offenbach, Germany, Sept. 29, 1978 is spellbinding. The note Wayne Shorter hits at 2:24 is beyond sublime

Really loved that, great work lads. 'Black Market' has always been at the top for me by a tiny, tiny margin. I'd always ignored the post-'Procession' releases until this episode. Just started with 'This Is This!', and it's actually very good - not WR in the classic sense, but still an enjoyable listen - with CS on fire as you both said. 'Sportin' Life' next!

Like the 'Daylight Again' shirt! Alphonse Mouzon was a big favourite of Led Zeppelin's John Bonham. Apparently on more than one occasion hotel staff had to have words after he started jamming along in the middle of the night to Mouzon records on the drum kit he'd had set up in his room.

Alphonse Mouzon Mind Transplant and Billy Cobham Spectrum both feature game changing guitar work from the legendary Tommy Bolin. Should not be missed by any lover of guitar firepower. And some of Jaco's best bass playing with the band is on Night Passage.

It's a bit like song lyrics, knowing what the song is about or what inspired them or how the song was recorded or who might have played on them, for me is better than remaining blissfully unaware. Having said that though, my favourite piece of drumming on a Rolling Stones song is on "You can't always get what you want" and it turns out it wasn't even Charlie Watts playing ! Oh well !!

I am with you guys...the late albums are the pre-cursor to the Zawinul Syndicate. The vocals remind me of ths Pat Metheny Group World/Latin albums. The reason Joe Z. started with the bass patches? Jaco, unfortunately, became too erratic. That & the technology bled over to the Victpr Bailey-era. IMO. Any album with less Wayne is not cool. You guys remember when Downbeat mag gave Mr. Gone a 1-Star review? The band had an issue to rebut this review. Great daze.

Love hearing both your thoughts on jazz artists. Look forward to more in the future. I have looked into a lot of jazz before the '70s, but WR has been a staple for me, as well as The Mahavishnu Orchestra. My ranking: 1. Heavy Weather (it's more mainstream yes, but Jaco rules!) 2. Black Market (the variety of players makes this a fun listen) 3. Mysterious Traveller (the killer cover matches the music for me!) 4. Sweetnighter (only slightly better than the debut for me) 5. Weather Report '71 (I love the bass work on this too!) 6. I Sing the Body Electric 7. Tale Spinnin' 8. Night Passage 9. Weather Report '82 10. Procession 11. I also like Black Market! Agree also with Pete that Mike Stern would have been awesome in the band! I love the Prog/Jazz Fusion shows!

It was Ray Bradbury who wrote "I sing the body electric" - I believe it is an anthology like his "The Illustrated Man" and one of his bigger sellers in the late sixties and early seventies.

@@grahamallen9393 Cool that he could pull it off back then. Most of us took about 10-15 years after the fact to get it even close. :-0

Thinking of all the Weather Report drummers I think Alex Acuña would be my favourite.

If Mike Stern in W-Rpt? Mind blown.... It’s enough just to contemplate the greatness of the Black Market album.

WR was the best of the fusion bands. They were genuine, musi cal and didn't overplay. Best that they didn't have a guitarist. My top 3 - Heavy Weather, Night Passage and Black Market.

I’m pretty new to these guys, but I Have the live album, 8:30. And it’s killer!

I dont have any WR after 8.30 live and agree that Heavy Weather is a great entry into them , and though that was the first one I got my favourites are Black Market and Mysterious Traveller. When I was getting onto them I came across a copy of Live in Tokyo so had to get it and so glad I did its great. I also couldnt resist getting the Forecast Tomorrow box set that came out back in 2006 as that has the live dvd from 78 with Jaco on it and though I had most of whats on the first 2 discs there are some unreleased cuts on them and the thrid disc is all post 8:30. Anything pre 1980 is great - though I would agree that the earlier Miroslav Vitous stuff probably isnt the best place to start but its a great place to eventually get to. Also absolutely love the 2002 live and unreleased set.
