I didn't listen a lot Thin Lizzy Nightlife when I was younger, now I love it!!! Martin, Pete, thanks for a great hour spent after a busy day. Greetings from Slovenia.

We had a full solar eclipse in the UK in 1999. I remember it mostly because it was weird. It didn't go that dark, but the atmosphere became really odd. All the build up was about how dark it would get, but it became murky, and the atmosphere became kind of humid. It lasted about 10 minutes but it was gradual. Apparently it got quite dark in the South, in Cornwall and Devon.
@aldebaran4154

That means you weren't under totality. The 1991 solar eclipse here in Hawai'i was only a total eclipse over Hawai'i Island. I was living on Oahu at the time and we had the same as you described. I think we had 95% of the moon covering the sun. It happened right after sunrise so it became light with birds chirping, started to get really dark again and all the birds went quiet with the brightest stars being seen. It was wonderfully weird.

I'd go as far as to say that 'The Sun Goes Down' is possibly the finest song on a final album by a major rock band. That 'The Wild...' cover for UFO is a shocker, and it was by Hipgnosis apparently. I fall more in line with Pete's rankings with a few differences. I am almost 180 degrees from Martin on these rankings. As usual, Martin puts a heavy emphasis on production when he judges an album. I firmly believe this is the main reason he gravitates towards the late 70's - 80's albums in most of these ranking shows. On another note, he is Quick to dismiss the mellow material on the Schenker era UFO albums but embraces the mellow material on the Chapman era albums. Not to mention, the mellow songs off Phil's debut albums that he finds appealing are just not very good, IMO. Oh well, I still have tons of respect for you, Martin!

Thin Lizzy and UFO are two of my all time favorite bands. Haven’t heard any of the “family“ bands’ material, but I’ll rank what I’ve heard from these bands, and list my favorite song from each. Oh, and keep in mind that I at least like all of these albums, and I love most of them. 19. Nightlife - Thin Lizzy (Philomena) 18. Shades of a Blue Orphanage - Thin Lizzy (Baby Face) 17. Obsession - UFO (You Don’t Fool Me) 16. Thunder and Lightning - Thin Lizzy (Holy War) 15. Thin Lizzy - Thin Lizzy (Remembering) 14. Renegade - Thin Lizzy (Leave This Town) 13. No Place to Run - UFO (No Place to Run) 12. No Heavy Petting - UFO (On With the Action) 11. Johnny the Fox - Thin Lizzy (Massacre) 10. The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent - UFO (Long Gone) 9. Force It - UFO (Too Much of Nothing) 8. Bad Reputation - Thin Lizzy (Opium Trail) 7. Lights Out - UFO (Lights Out) 6. Fighting - Thin Lizzy (Wild One) 5. Chinatown - Thin Lizzy (Chinatown) 4. Phenomenon - UFO (Rock Bottom) 3. Vagabonds of the Western World - Thin Lizzy (Vagabond of the Western World) 2. Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy (Emerald) 1. Black Rose: A Rock Legend - Thin Lizzy (With Love)

Love Pete's face when Martin ranked Jailbreak pretty low and the Lynott solo records among his top 10 😆 As a Lizzy fan my top five would be my top Lizzy albums followed by Lights Out and Obsession.

I'm with Team Martin. I much prefer the Chapman-era of UFO to the Shenker-era. No Place To Run, The W, The W and the I and Mechanix would be my favorite UFO-albums.

For solar viewing basically make sure the item you're using is made from mylar or conforms to the ISO 12312-2:2015(E) international safety standard. Great show. My favorite would be Thin Lizzy's Bad Reputation, then UFO's Phenomenon, Lights Out, Lizzy's Johnny the Fox and finally Jailbreak. Later edit: I thought I was the only one who''s favorite UFO song of the Schenker era was Can You Roll Her. Glad to see I'm not alone.

funky junction tribute to deep purple,is the best early lizzy line up,remember buying it for 1 pound from woolworths department store,music for pleasure records.who put out cheap comps of elvis,bing crosby etc didnt know that funky junction were lynott/bell/downey plus someone else on vox for years

Well done for pointing it out. It was my first rock album (50p, also from Woolworths). The singer was Benny White, the keysman Dave "Mojo" Lennox. Both were in Irish rock band Elmer Fudd. Lizzy Mk.1 with organ sounded fantastic.

@@BlueBlazer47 youre correct it was 50p not a quid,had 50p sticker on it,actually quite a good album,the purple covers are good,and some of eric bells best guitar work,and the organ work is spot on too,even singer is pretty good

I’m trying to remember…. When they film these on Friday mornings, is it around 9 or 10am? The reason being, I wonder if Pete felt the infamous little 4.8 earthquake that happened in the region.

Man I’m old. I remember seeing UFO opening for Rush at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium the year they recorded ‘Strangers In The Night’. Rush had released All The World’s A Stage’ & I thought UFO blew them off the stage that night. Also the same year I saw Thin Lizzy promoting’Bad Reputation album opening for Queen at the LA Forum. That was just before ‘Live Killers’ came out. Both bands kicked ass that night as I remember.

I love these discussions, I watch them every week, but for the life of me I just don't get Martin Popoff. Week after week he openly writes off classic albums and songs as rubbish! In earlier episodes you could actually see Pete blush in exasperation when he did it.

Speaking of S&M, just heard the demo. It's off the hook. It's like twice as fast. It also has 2 guitar solos, Scott Gorham first then Gary Moore. "Thin Lizzy - S & M (Fast Version Demo)" I always liked the song. It has Scott Gorham's best guitar solo. First time I heard it on the Black Rose album, I thought it was Gary Moore.
