Lud and Zallen made me almost quit the game entirely. And I definitely spawned in every NPC without shame to get through it

Theres actually a pretty good skip to go straight to the Adjudicator, on the wall with the skelly archer in the middle go to the opposite tower you went up from and you can roll over the wall to drop down right beside the fog gate

Missed one of the worst parts about Number 2 It's timed so if you take your time killing the knights you risk getting booted from the area!

4-1 Island's edge actually has an unitended shortcut through the level. On the right side of that first gate of the castle area, where there is a set of stairs down to the key to free Graverobber Blige. At the top of the stairs, roll from the top of the stairs toward the right over the small gap, it's really easy to do. Now you'll be at the boss in no time!

The Lud and Zallen fight is the only Soulsborne boss I've never beaten. Heard the horror stories, beat the Ivory king after completing everything else in the game, got to that bonfire by the coffin and thought to myself "........nah!"

Not sure if this is common knowledge or not - but if you kill an enemy 7 times in DS2, they don’t respawn. Knowing this has made some of these run backs more tolerable lol

I'm surprised Blue Smelty isn't on the list. Even with NPC summons it's one of the most annoying runbacks ever, possibly even tied with Horsefuck Valley.

I think a Top 20 excluding DS2 would be much more interesting. Cold take but it's just so notorious for that thing on top of a few other things.

80% of worst runbacks are in dark souls 2

I feel like the idea of "runbacks" diminishes the idea of what souls games are. DS2 requires you to carefully and procedurally play through the level well and then not choke the boss fight. Its not intended for you to cheese through. I enjoy this

The dark calsm of old in drangliec castle can be cheese just bring a bow poison arrows and lure each phantom to the start individually and there's some rocks behind you that you can jump to and they can't hit you

I knew what #1 was gonna be before I even saw it, and I'VE NEVER EVEN PLAYED DARK SOULS 2. That's how infamous it is.

With some careful evasion and stamina management the iron keep enemies can be quite easily run past 9/10 times. Take it from someone who died 20 times to the smelter demon on sl1 on SOTFS

The Old Hero runback actually does have a partial skip. After the skeletons along the side of the island, once you go through the tunnel, you can roll to the right into a small ledge, and then roll off, putting you right in front of a reaper, that can be knocked off the area and killed in one shot, thereby allowing you to skip 1-2 shadowlurkers on the narrow path down.

Cave of the dead isnt as bad as people say if you get the petrify resist ring. I found it to be by far the least painful of the optional dlc trio (or quartet including Alonne)

the ds2 dlc side areas are explicitly co-op challenges. doing them solo is an artificial challenge. even with co-op help they're not great, but even the frigid outskirts isn't ~that~ bad with a co-op partner to help burst damage the reigndeer down & split boss aggro.

As a natural completionist I normally kill every optional boss on each subsequent playthrough of any of the soulsborne games. But reindeer f**kland is the only place I will never step foot in ever again after I killed lud and zallen for the first time.

btw a tip than idk if people know that and it's about the poisons statues for black gulch (who isn't on this list), the less green ones are the ones who spit poison at the player, the other more green ones are just here for decoration (maybe everyone know but i'm just here to tell that)

I've played and every single Souls game multiple times. I refuse to do Frigid Outskirts.

Recently did Sir Alonne on Covenant of Champions mode. It was probably the worst experience I've ever had in a souls game (like actually rage inducing). Gonna try Frigid outskirts covenant of champions soon but I suspect it's gonna be as awful as it usually is, compared to the hell Alonne turned into. Also for those who don't know, covenant of champions increases enemy health, poise and most importantly... removes the perma death mechanic from enemies, so no clearing them out anymore.

I recently bough the original Darks Souls 2 for the XBox 360 because I wanted to see how differnet it was from the Scholar version and to my shock the XBox one doesn't play it.... so I still don't know!

I think you misunderstand how Dragon Shrine works in original DS2. It's a gimmick area in SotFS... you have to fight the prescribed enemies, or the other stuff aggros on you. In original DS2, most of those aggroing on you enemies just don't exist.

The thing about iron keep is that scholar made it so much worse, in the base game you could dead sprint to the fog and get in if you timed it right and didn't get hit, scholar put in a bunch kf extra archers so its physically impossible to skip the enemies, you have to kill everything

I think 4-2 is the worst run back, not because it’s a worse run than Lud and a Zallen but because there’s literally no reason to go to reindeer duck land where as 4-2 is mandatory for demons souls and you will need black world tendency to get multiple important items for dex weapons making the runs even harder

Frigid Outskirts is number 1, thats my guess. Smelter Demon at Number 4. Lets see if im right.

I can run straight through Blue Smelter, Gank Squad, and Alonne , easy. Chariot is a risky straight runback, bc Executioners will almost always catch me at the fog wall, so I’ll kill them one by one, easy. Frigid Outskirts made me quit the game 3 months, but I’ve grown to respect it. The snowstorm mechanic is very interesting, due to it forcing fights. 1) Range Bow users can’t snipe, or kite one-on-one. 2) Co-op groups of noobs with a pro, can’t let the pro scout ahead and clear the content. They’ve got to stick together. (I also grew to find the Reindeer a very fun mob to fight; great design and moves). For my money Scholar’s remake of the runback to the Red Smelter is THE WORST. There’s almost no chance of ever running straight to the fog wall and not get caught. I assume, in a Souls game, there’s always a way to run to a boss without fighting. You just got to find the right route that works for you. But that runback is impossible, and it requires that every single enemy along the way be killed. Vanilla, the run is easy. Fortunately, I am a Pro at killing Red Smelter, so the runback isn’t necessarily ever an issue. Moral of the story: run, don’t fight, unless it’s Scholar Red Smelter.

The only way I managed to get threw the first room in the Sir Alone runback was to lead the knights from the left path to the Salamander and then run threw that same hall way while hoping I make threw. Also I refuse to do Lud and Zallen

Old Hero runback can be sub-2mins without having to attack a single enemy :D (other than maybe a particular Shadowlurker if it decides to bodyblock), but even then I'd probs still have it in my top 10 lol, just a bit lower. Agree on all the entries on here other than poss Adjudicator cuz of the skip, which makes it a bit awkward to judge. Oh and prob Blue Smelter worse than Demon of Song, but I've only played DS2 once, was prob doin' the BS runback poorly. Great vid as always!

You only need to kill a 2-3 of the enemies to reach Smelter Demon, but the way you do it is so cryptic that it took me 4 playthroughs to figure it out.

Since you discount the hidden bonfires for runbacks like bed of chaos and gravelord nito, I think Iron Golem’s runback should be on the list. It is absolute hell if you don’t find the bonfire. Also, while shrine of Amanda sucks, the runback doesn’t. I unfortunately had SOFTS, so the runback to ancient dragon wasn’t a problem for me. Sir Alonne’s runback is bad game design, but it was easy to respawn the enemies.

Tbh everybody knew what was going to be number one on this list. Its just not even close

dark lurker runback is pretty easy especially on drangleic, just parry them near the edge and push them

after this list, i'm so happy that i finished DS2 main campaing and called it a day, never toutching those DLCs if it means this kind of garbage design

Okay, so the first time I fought sir Allonne was on a Drunk Souls 2 run: stream the playthrough with the challenge being drunk (drink responsibly.) I ended up inadvertendtly despawning every enemy in the area. After that, surprisingly it did not take too many tries (albiet all my estus each fight) to kill Allonne. Never doing that again. Dark Souls while drinking is fun. Dark Souls 2 while drinking is fun. Dark Souls 2 drives you to drink. Also, did you make this list just so Lud and Zallen could finally get a number 1 spot on... something? :p

When I got to the Iron Keep a few days ago I was ready for some really bad game design and cheap deaths but to my surprise it was very manageable and enjoyable. You just take your time and tale a few deaths to get the lay out and it is quite fine.

But in 4-1 you can just do the roll off the tower to skip the whole level

I despise Frigid Outskirts, and it's for a boss I find frustrating too. Also, since I hear Armored Core 6 music, it makes me wonder if any AC6 rankings are in the works.

Dark souls 2...king of worst run backs. This year I finally completed all of the soulsborne games with their DLCs and dark souls 2 even most bosses are easy the run backs are the worst

I mean, yeah, there was 0 way Frigid Outskirts wasn't number 1. On my second playthrough of the game (my first solo playthrough, since on my first actual playthrough I had a friend play each area with me) I didn't die once on the Frigid Outskirts, neither from the area nor from the bosses in it... but it's just so damn boring. There's literally nothing interesting in it, it's just a long ass run to a boss recycled from the very same DLC.

executioneer boss run isn't even that bad, you can easly run through the alley, just dodge twice on the last 2 ennemies then run through the bridge and jump right at the very end and wait for them to de aggro or jump off

Ruin sentinels and executioner chariots are awful, for the sentinels, it’s only the MASSIVE gauntlet in cramped corridors, chariot has the gimmick necromancer making it even worse and frustrating Have yet to get to the brume tower and eleum loyce bosses, but already dread frigid outskirts Oddly don’t have that much issue with the shulva gank runback, bait them one by one with a bow makes it bearable, unlike the boss itself

Ok reality check. Putting Ds2 on a worst boss run back video is just wrong. It completely ignores Ds2's mechanic where enemies permanently despawn after you kill them enough times making the boss run back a picnic walk. Ds2 also has the best boss run back, the royal rat authority, the bonfire is right in front of the boss door.

there is no such thing as a boss runback there is just one checkpoint to the next The only reason people even recall that checkpoint more than any other part of the game is because they die to the boss, if you've never died to that boss, i guarantee you don't even think of what came directly before it. If there was no space between checkpoints there would be no game if you are going to complain about the distance between two checkpoints you may as well be asking for quick saves, and if you want that, then you are playing the wrong game.
