Progressive Rock. Someone brainwashed me into thinking it was all pretentiousness, but thanks to you, Pete, during this quarantine, I listened to a lot of the progressive rock that you recommended. Not only am I a huge fan now, but it also inspired me to play guitar again.

I didn't hear anyone in the comments mention the Beatles. For me I was too young to appreciate just how good their stuff was. Now I appreciate just how special the Beatles were. I guess it took getting older!

First one that comes to mind for me are Blue Oyster Cult. Ignored them until a few years ago because i heard them on the radio too many times as a kid. Now they are one of my favorite bands, and I wish i hadn't ignored them.

A wordy one for me because this is a great idea! Pink Floyd - embarrassed to say I was way too much of a metalhead as a teenager that I actually dissed fans of Floyd 🙄. Proud to say they are now firmly among my very favorite bands! Heart - again, in the 80s I was all about metal and edgier hard rock. At that time Heart was much too poppy for me. Now I know better! These ladies have always rocked and I love all the eras.

Rainbow and Deep Purple. Because of Pete's passion for them I decided to do a deep dive and I'm having a blast. I always liked and Respected Purple but never got past the hits

Couldn't agree more on Cinderella. Hated "Nobody's Fool" when I was younger and never bothered to give them another listen. A few years later I wound up hearing "Gypsy Road" and was shocked when I found out it was Cinderella. Started listening to them more, and they're probably my second favorite band now. "Nobody's Fool" has even grown on me and it's now one of my favorite power ballads.

December 19th 1975. Blue Oyster Cult, Kansas, and Ted Nugent at the Long Beach Arena. So. Cal. What a show that was.

Chris is something else. The Rush story was priceless. I love Hold Your Fire, and Time Stand Still is one of my faves. I can forgive him because he practically made me spit my drink out from laughing so hard.😃

Really strong episode. I got to see BOC at the Stockton Asparagus Festival in 2010. Final song the singer screamed "ASPARAGUS" into the mic, really loud. Great show.

Did not pay much attention in 1987 to Tony Martin's first album with Black Sabbath but now Eternal Idol is one of my favorites. From first song Ancient Warrior to title track final cut, Eternal Idol is All Killer - No Filler Black Sabbath album.

Thin Lizzy, only knew a couple of their most popular songs and although I kinda like them never cared to get any deeper into them, now I discovered their discography (which is huge btw) and I totally love it. Thunder & Lightning is probably my fave last album by any band.

I’ve long believed that you have to be in the right place at the right time to appreciate music. It’s a strange combination of factors that come together which result in you reacting positively to something. My example isn’t a group but a solo artist - Robert Wyatt. For years I had heard about his album ‘Rock Bottom’ and how amazing it was supposed to be. I had bought it, sold it, bought it, sold it, but despite my best efforts it did nothing for me at all. Then in summer 1996 I spent a very pleasant day on Hampstead Heath in London, reading Sherlock Holmes stories and drinking a few beers. When I went home that evening I decided for some unexplained reason to put on ‘Rock Bottom’ again. It was beautiful, magical, ethereal, extraordinary. It has been one of my all time favourite records ever since. Another one that comes to mind is The Smiths. When they were around in the ‘80s, I didn’t like them at all. I couldn’t grasp the humour in their music and found them depressing. I was even offered two tickets to see them at the Kilburn National in 1986 (the show that became the ‘Rank’ LP) and turned them down. Then in the late ‘90s I met a young woman who loved Morrissey and played his music constantly. I think I tried harder to like The Smiths as I adored her, and it worked. Something clicked and I was a complete convert. I now think of them as the greatest British band of the 1980s.

Jethro Tull- pretty much ignored them in their heyday other than the song Aqualung. Rediscovered them thanks to this channel and now have everything on vinyl through Stormwatch.

Genesis, I never liked the 80s shit, but then I found Selling England By The Pound on youtube and that got me hooked on the 70s stuff

Great topic and choices, glad there will be a pt 2. Mine would have to be Nightwish, heard it constantly stationed in Europe in the late 90s and rediscovered them around 2010 and a massive favorite of mine now second only to BOC.

Pink Floyd - when I was 10 or 12 years old I didn't really like them, I thought they were a little too soft, but then over the years I really grown to love them. I listened to Dark Side and The Wall nonstop in my early teens, great albums and guitar work from Gilmour. Really great band!

For me its Sammy Hagar. My ex loved him i just liked a song here and there. But in the last few years i find i was wrong. I really love him now. Cosmic Universal Fashion was the song that really hooked me.

Damn; I'm a fifty-one year old Metalhead who especially loves Doom Metal and I am sitting here listening to Candlemas' Nightfall for the first time ever - thanks Nick! Also: yeah, I know, what the hell is wrong with me, not having listened to Candlemas until right this moment. This is one of the many reason's I watch your channel: great music discovery.

When MTV was brand new I really didn't care for all of these new-wave pop bands that appeared on the channel, but all of these years later I've come to really appreciate their work such as Missing Persons, The Human League, The Fixx, etc. I consider Missing Persons' debut record "Spring Session M" to be one of the best, if not THE best, new wave records of the 80's.

Steve has been on a roll with these topic ideas. This is an awesome one. I have two bands that come to mind at the moment (one of them might surprise you): The Police - I thought they were *so* overrated. Didn't care for the music at all, and I couldn't stand Sting's vocals, or his ridiculous Rasta affectations (I think Elvis Costello, or someone, once criticized Sting over this very thing.) Around a decade ago, I finally came around, and now they're cool. However, I do agree with the many who have said their catalogue is spotty, and the albums patchy; Of the five albums they released, only two of them have a high level of consistency to my ears. Pink Floyd - Sure, I love them now, but I couldn't stand them when I first encountered their music back in '94. I was in my early teens then, and they had just released The Division Bell, and had a tour to support that album. In '94 and '95 (with the release of Pulse), I remember it being a big deal. On the radio, many songs were played from the album, as well as stuff from DSOTM, WYWH, AMLoR, and The Wall. I thought every last bit of it was shit. Didn't like a single tune I heard. Fast forward to 2003. After soaking up the sounds of bands like Yes, Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and King Crimson for a couple of years, I was strangely led back to Pink Floyd. Wouldn't you know it. I loved it. Loved them ever since.

This format works best when the presenter can give their exposition for 1-2 minutes without interruption. Most of the guys "get it" in terms of balancing "when to chime in" and being generous with their silence, and I appreciate those guys. The Sweden/Candlemas story is gold!

Nice to hear about my freinds in Candlemass. Leif is a very humble guy. I was the promotor for the first Candlemass gig ever back in the eighties. The bill was Candlemass, Scandinavian Dynamite with Thomas Wikström who later became the singer with Candlemass and our band Zaragon. Great times

Some “hair bands” really surprised me, first Winger, which I occasionally saw opening for Mr Big, I’ve founded out that they are extremely good, Reb Beach became one of my favourite guitar player. Later, I started to listen to Harem Scarem, another band with good musicians and good stuff

Frank Zappa - I heard " Joe's Garage " when I was 10. I couldn't Comprehend it. Then in my 20s I " Got It ". Now I think hes the Greatest Recorded Artist of the 20th Century.

Never listened to BOC growing up, just whatever song from them was on the radio. Had ONE of Thier albums on CD, "Fire of Unknown Origin" in the mid eighties. I think I listened to it once! Just never bothered or gave them a chance...until this past year. All I can say now is that they are a FANTASTIC band and I'm making up for lost time, especially thier first three albums! Thanks Pete for all you and guests provide! 👍😊.

Nick's selections (Candlemass & BOC) really resonated with me! A casual fan 'till I delved into their catalog & realised what giants they were & are in their perspective genres.

King Crimson. I discovered In the Court, when I was 12 in a record store. I was listening to Maiden, Dire Straits, Queen and so forth. But I thought, the cover was fantastic and I expected some kind of Metal record. So I listened into it and didn't get the thing. That was so strange stuff. In the coming 25 years I developed a love for prog rock. Genesis, Yes, Marillion Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater... But I never tried KC again, as I had made "bad experiences" with them. So last year with over 40 I bought In the court with very low expectations and was blown away. Now I have all KC Albums in the shelf.

I was at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2005 too, Nick. And you’re absolutely right, that Candlemass gig was amazing!!!

I'm with Chris on Rush, one of those ignored bands I knew about but just didn't feel a lot for or ever truly got around to explore much until sometime in the '90s. Love them now, of course.

Another great episode as always! It's so cool that you guys can just talk about music and, even if you not agree with each other, there is no fighting or any bullshit amongst yourselves. So many "shows" are just about that, to spike ratings or whatever. For me it has to Stratovarius, I just could not get into them. I had a friend at the record store who would always recommend them to me and give me their records to listen to, but just didn't dig their music. Until they released Visions in '97 and those two songs: The Kiss of Judas and Black Diamond, totally grabbed me and now they are one of my favorite bands. Really cool that Pete now likes Cinderella, they rock! And also one of many bands who might have come out at the wrong time, like Winger for example.

Because Pete listed UFO as #7 on his list of greatest bands I've since gotten into UFO. I've reinvigorated my love for Styx. As for a band I used to.ignore that now I love? Pat Benatar. Holy smokes! Neil is an awesome guitarist!!! And Pat is a killer singer!!!

Kiss I originally wasn’t in to Bc I started with their Hot in the Shade album sadly. Then i revisited them and they are my favorite band of all time! Love from NJ!

King Crimson - because as a kid all they played on the radio in NY were those 2 songs from the debut, but now I enjoy all incarnations. Also, XTC - billed as a new wave band, but they were really progressive/pop, with a healthy dose of psychedelia (especially under their pseudonym, “The Dukes of Stratosphere.” )

Pink Floyd. I used to hate them because my mum kept listening to them. Then one day I grew up and I listened to them properly and I was like aaaahhhh.

Peter Gabriel is this biggest one for me. I’ve heard In Your Eyes, Shock the Monkey, and Solsbury Hill and I love those songs but I still never listened to anything beyond those songs. Then recently I got the urge to listen an album by him. I started with So and have been a Big Time fan ever since (see what I did there). My favorite of his albums is probably either his third or fourth album.

Great concept guys! When I was in high school I would visit a local radio station where my DJ friend would give me access to the production room to listen to anything in the library. I listened to Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band, a few seconds o' each track through the entire double album. My impression was this is the worst excuse for "music" I've ever heard. Later when I was in a more susceptible frame o' mind I GOT IT! I realized what seemed to be fragmented and disjointed noise was actually the result o' meticulous musicianship. Every note was played correctly as written. Pure genius disguised as total chaos. The follow up album-Lick My Decals Off, Baby is as good as it gets. Definitely an acquired taste 'n not for everyone.

STP. Never paid much attention to them in the 90s but there is simply no denying their numerous flashes of greatness

For over 30 years I disliked Bruce Springsteen. Then one day about 3 years ago for some strange reason I played Born to Run on a dive bar juke box. And ever since that night I've been liking him more and more. I even bought his new album and love it. About ten years ago I finally started liking Yes after not being a fan for decades. So the only two legendary artists left I never liked are U2 and The Grateful Dead. But I don't see me being a big fan of either any time soon. But who knows? I did just buy Skeltons from the Closet for a buck a few weeks ago.

The Scorpions growing up all I ever heard was Rock You Like a Hurricane and a couple other overplayed Tunes I really hated that band for. Of time and then I heard the early albums and the Tokyo tapes and just basically fell in love

KISS - Growing upon the 1980s I never loved these guys; I just honestly felt their mid to late 80s music (Radio and MTV releases I actually had heard) was inferior to the other bands out there. Since I discovered this channel and have heard Pete’s praise for KISS, I listened to their 70s stuff and am now a huge fan. Scorpions - The same story as KISS. Now I love their 70s and early 80s stuff. Listen to them all the time now.

Watching this channel got me into Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy, which I sort of missed both growing up (however I was way into the Stones from a young age). I knew the bigger songs but never dove into the full albums until recently and so glad I did. Ithink both bands now are amazing, better late than never! I am on team Steve, I really love Never Say Die!!

Saxon for me. I lumped them in with the NWOBHM movement here in the UK, which I wasn't fussed on. Caught them live in early '83 and felt they weren't really my cup of tea, then again at The Reading Festival in '86 and I still couldn't warm to them. However, I went with a mate to see them live in 2007 and they blew me away. Love the band now.

I have a few that could fit this show The Beatles ~ my parents played them all the time, when I was younger I never got why they loved them the songs weren't interesting, then I listened to the Pyschodelic Sgt Pepper's and my mind changed on them, one of my favorites now Genesis: I saw them as some 80s band, until you pete said foxtrot was a great album and now there one of my favorites, I brushed prog music off for a long time

I think BOC is finally getting appreciated even more by newer fans and older alike just for how great they are.

This made me smile and nod to myself because I can really relate to Pete with the Stones. I know a lot of their stuff but actually don't own any. I don't dislike them but never really feel like listening to them. Time to give them a chance.

I used to dislike Santana when I listened to the song Smooth and all the colaborations he did with famous artists in the late 90s early 2000s, but now is one of my favorite bands after listening to the album Abraxas in 2010 I got really hooked until this day, I think their first 6 or 7 albums are amazing

Black Oak Arkansas was my first concert.(1975 ?) Unforgettable. Backed up by a band called Diamond Rio. My bf and I were standing with our elbows resting on the stage and I lost track of my bf somehow, and I was freaking out !!..and this dude tapped on my shoulder and said "is that her?" pointing under the stage/risers..Aha! There she was, with her mocassins sticking out,🙃 and I grabbed them and pulled and some guys helped me get her up and out. She was ok. Beer was all over the floor, so she reeked like beer so bad.( We felt as though we walked through "The Halls of Commons.")..I agree w/Pete about The Rolling Stones vs. The Who.👍 I am going with Cinderella, because I always dissed on my friends for always playing it at parties. Love them now. But I still really dislike, ok hate, The Grateful Dead. ! 🤟✌️

First concert i ever attended (1976) was Black Oak and Head East. Drove 100 miles in a snow storm, which kept a lot of people home, but both bands played like they were at a packed stadium. Will never forget it.

Cinderella, Great White, and Tesla were those bands doing the real blues-y hard rock stuff that got lumped in with the hair metal because of the image, production, and a a couple radio power ballads. All are great bands in my opinion.

I never really liked the Phil Collins era of Genesis, but I've started to like them a lot more now. I even have them on my Spotify play list.

Fleetwood Mac for me. Growing up they were a boring middle of the road band that my parents would play in the car. I liked The Chain, but that was it. Over the years I've come to not only appreciate the classic line up stuff but also the early Peter Green stuff as well. I've also just bought 5 of the interim albums as well.

Had a similar Blue Öyster Cult 'epiphany' moment as Nick, at my first concert ever in 1983. Actually went to see the opening band, Rainbow...however, somehow left the Cow Palace a BÖC fan seemingly for life now.

GREAT topic. Currently for me it has to be Lizzy Borden. I never gave them the time of day back in the 80's because I was too into the "hair" scene and the name alone drove me away (even though I adored Iron Maiden). This channel has opened me up to being more open minded, so when I came across Lizzy Borden's Greatest Hits on KZfaq, I gave it a listen. Color me blown away. Death metal name, glam metal sound. Loved every song on the upload.

For me its Kraftwerk. Great 70's catalog I wanted nothing to do with and now I love all of 'em.

Cinderella is amazing. Was into them from day one. One of the best 80's hard rock bands. Saxon is my pick. I had their live album on cassette, which was pretty good. Then a few years ago I heard Sacrifice and then Battering Ram and was blown away. Come to find out that all their albums are killer going back to the 90's and earlier.

Awesome job guys! Must See TV with the Hudson Valley Square is the biggest thing I look forward to every Tuesday afternoon. Being very young and still only 2 years into my journey with heavy metal and hard rock, I don't have many choices for bands I used to overlook, but I do have some that may have bypassed me earlier on but now I love. Iron Maiden - Last year when I first heard of this band, I was hugely into Megadeth and Black Sabbath and Diamond 💎 Head, but only knew one Iron Maiden song, which was The Trooper, and never felt the desire to check out IM. This year they have become easily a top 3 band for me, up there with Metallica and Megadeth, and I greatly look forward to seeing them live when that is possible. Judas Priest - This is a more recent one (literally a matter of months!), but from what I was saying previously, it took me a bit of time to feel the desire to really dive into Priest. After hearing Screaming for Vengeance, I quickly jumped onboard the Judas Priest train, and can definitely consider them a top tier band for me. Van Halen - This is all the more relevant considering the devastating recent death of Eddie (R.I.P.) and especially seeing that I didn't ever really listen to VH for a while. I have been getting into them quite a bit recently, and have really been enjoying some of their songs, especially the debut album, Hot for teacher, Women and children First and Tattoo (it's so silly it's great!). Rest in peace Eddie! I do have quite a lot of bands that I am currently getting into, including Accept, Extreme, Anthrax, Slayer and Overkill. Anyway, great video once again. I really enjoyed Ryan's story about presenting a speech about Some Girls by the Rolling Stones to his music class. Look forward to seeing more Hudson Valley Square! Also, Time Stand Still RULES!

Some of my choices might shock a lot of people, but here's the list of the bands/artists I used to hate or despise in the past, but now I can listen without problem: - Pearl Jam - Poison (I can't believe this: 30 years ago, they were one of the bands I despised the most, but since 10-12 years, I changed my mind. They'll never be one of my favorite bands, but right now, I can appreciate some of their albums - not all of them) - Phil Collins (he was so aired on the radios & TV I couldn't stand him, but now, he's OK in my personal book) - Hall & Oates - Duran Duran - A-Ha - Weezer (I ignored this band because of their weird look during the 90's, but when I decided to give a serious try to their stuff and I began to appreciate some of their albums) - The Pixies (back in time, I was too into Hard Rock/Metal to care about this band, but I opened up my mind since 15 years and now, their 3 first records are constantly played in my house) - Cutting Crew (I used to underrate this band during the 80's, but they're really good musicians) - Cyndi Lauper (I used to compare her to Madonna during the 80's. Damn, I was so strongly wrong ! she can sing, perform on stage, write good songs and play stuff like Country, Rock & Blues with real credibility) - Firehouse (same thing I said for Poison. Besides some exceptions, I wasn't into these so-called "hair-bands" during the late 80's & the 90's, but since 15 years, my relationship with these bands is now appeased, I am more tolerant with these bands) - Stevie Nicks - Sting .

Radiohead. My ego got the best of me early with OK Computer at 27 years old. Now? Absolutely stunning music. Changed my life.

You are right, Pete. Cinderella is the only hair metal band I bother with today. Just bought their album Night Songs to complete the collection. Maybe I should check out Tom Kiefer's solo stuff next.

I always thought Genesis were a boring band, and hated Progressive rock. But thanks to the Sea of Tranquility channel ,I gave it a shot and bought 'Selling England'. That album changed my mind. So I had to have all their early albums ,which I love now. Same with King Crimson...

I only started to listen and buying Iron maiden around 2005, when someone showed me the clip for "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg". I got hooked and start to explore the band catalog since their debut until the 7 Son album, when i lost interest again. I dont love them as much other classic rock bands, but at least now i can talk about Iron maiden with some of my obsessed friends.

Yep Pete, me too on the Stones. I used to change the radio station if they came on. Ask me today, early 70s Stones, some of the best ever, period!

I got to see BOC back in 2011 at the Lawrenceburg Fall Fest in Indiana. Rudy Sarzo was playing bass with them at the time and it was great. We were lucky enough to get pulled from the crowd pre-show and got to do a meet and greet with the band. My daughter and I were able to get a picture taken as well. Great show.

I'm 48 and thanks to this channel I now own the box set of blue oyster cult and their last 3 albums. Cannot stop listening to them. Its a rabbit hole of musical delight. Man, what a fucking band.

Night Songs album by Cinderella is a MASTERPIECE!!! The album cover does not do justice to the music on the album at all. Every song on the album is amazing in my opinion. Even the power ballad Nobody's Fool is a great song.

It wasn't dislike but I wasn't really aware of Budgie or Uriah Heep...but then started watching Pete. They're right im my wheelhouse.

Love is a pretty strong word, therefore I can't think of any.

Besides getting into bands like Blind Guardian and Angra these past two years. The one band that I hated with a passion for at least twenty five years is Kiss. I have always hated their biggest hit Rock N Roll All Nite and I still do. About five years ago I bought their Unplugged CD used for $1 because I have always loved acoustic music. I could not believe how amazing the whole album was. I loved it immediately on my first listen, and I listened to it over and over for many days. Five years later I have all their studio albums, live albums, compilation albums, many bootleg live albums, and boxsets. Kiss has become one of my all time favorite bands ever, and they are easily in my top ten favorite bands ever with bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept, Iced Earth, Helloween, Megadeth, and Black Sabbath.

I grew up in S. Jersey and saw Cinderella several times on the club circuit before they had a record contract. They were a jeans & t-shirt, no-hair-gel-or-makeup kinda band. Then they signed the contract and in came the hairspray and mascara. Still, the music was always there....for the most part. The 3 that come to mind for me are Neil Young, The Doors, and RHCP.

I never got into Rush until a few years before they were done. I've always been into punk and stuff like that, so Rush for me represented stadium rock bloat. I paid dearly for sleeping on them though. For 3 consecutive years they came through my area (Charlotte, NC), one year with Thin Lizzy, one year with Saxon and one year with Riot. I missed all that. But I started getting into them late in their career and got to go back and discover their impressive back catalogue.

BOC...I knew the hits like everyone else but never bothered to listen to any of their albums. Now (at 53), I'm completely hooked! Their Black and White years all the way through the early 80s stuff are fantastic...I'm trying to get into the later stuff slowly but surely. Good job, guys!

Had a long, annoying day at work and couldn't wait to exit. Watching this helped alleviate stress from it. For me it's Frank Zappa. I never liked his eclectic vision, meshing or implementing different genres never hooked me. However a couple years ago I heard King Kong, Peaches en Regalia, etc that made me realize his unique vision and it fits my sui generis look on life.

I would go with Jethro Tull, I really liked their hits but not until recently did I start delving into their classic albums. I have to say that a lot of the times when I don't know what to listen to I'll throw on a 70's Tull album and I'm good.

Symphonic style metal with operatic female singers. I loved the music but the vocals, while amazing, just didn't grab me. Then for whatever reason, I listened to 'Requiem for the Indifferent' from Epica. From beginning to end, it just clicked. I loved it. Opened up a whole new world for me to explore.

Best example was moving to Jax Florida in 81' Lynyrd Skynyrd was shoved down our throats but after a couple of decades I grew to appreciate them and really like them "on my own terms" as Butch would say.

I hated Black Metal when I first heard it. Tower Records had an Import Section and during the Grunge pandemic the only place to find Metal was there. I saw the cover for Darkthrone's Transylvanian Hunger, I didn't know shit about BM, dude wearing face paint, thought King Diamond. So I got it home and my ears heard Count Dracula gargling razor blades and the music was super fast "Noise" so I took it back. Later on a friend told me in order to enjoy the music you have to separate the instruments in your mind and think evil thoughts and it all will make sense. Now my CD collection is half Black Metal bands!

I am almost embarrassed to admit this but I grew up in the 80s and still love all the hair bandsMetallica then in the 90s AIC etc but it's only in recent years, I now REALLY appreciate Led Zeppelin. I never disliked them but somehow they were just never on my radar. Go figure.
