The most accurate part of the song is how modern Christians just mumble uncomfortably as they explain away those parts of the Bible where God *literally* explains the logistics of buying and selling slaves; they just squirm and wince and say, “something something Old Testament?... um, Jesus was different, because he was, like... all about... love and stuff? This is kind of a vent song for me. I went to catholic school from kindergarten through 6th grade and my last few years there were hell. I tried to hold on to religion after I came out as transgender, but the “loving” religion was full of people who made me resent it. I’m atheist now and while I’m not mentally the best, I’m pretty sure I would be dead if I stayed within that community.

I relate a lot to the lyric "Thank you for making me rich and white". I'm a Christian from a poorer area, our neighbours are Christians from Nigeria, both our families can feel kinda excluded in our own church sometimes because it's set up for middle-to-upper-class families who've never felt hungry, never had to pick what essentials to buy (food or new shoes because the old ones have fallen apart? Or new clothes for the kids because theirs are beyond repair?) and never felt scared for their homes before. We want to change the church to help more people like us - there are plenty of churches for the upper class citizen - but the church leaders are happy with how it's currently run and don't want to change it.

I'll quote from the NIV Bible: "44 Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly."

It's 2021, a family member in my household has been becoming more and more religious by the day, reading what he can and talking to whoever he can find on the internet who can agree with his opinion. He's tried telling other members of my household how to act and think and behave. He hasn't gotten to me yet, but he heard me blasting this song from the shower just hours ago today. He asked what it was and I gave him the name of the song that played after Rant in fear of being yelled at or harrassed or something else. I want to move out so bad. This is me screaming into the void, I'm sure it'll be fine but I've been panicking all day and I'm afraid to face him.

Something really important I realized as and adult is that no one is inherently smarter (or better) than someone else. As a disabled female introvert raised Catholic in America, I believed for years that people older, richer,and seemingly more important than me were right whenever I was in doubt. That’s so far from being true. From old conservatives making fun of non-binary teens on TikTok to judges in favor of prosecuting people who’ve experienced miscarriages, this is proof that wisdom doesn’t come with age. We can’t control most things, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept them.

BaconMan In every way beyond a placebo.
@IceMetalPunk9 жыл бұрын
***** Because people ascribe more power to it than it has. Yes, the placebo effect is real, but no, it can't cure most diseases or injuries or disasters. When people think their prayers are helping others, they tend to do less actual helping and tend to seek less actual help. What people believe doesn't affect me personally and directly and instantly, but so what? I live as a social animal in a society full of people who ARE affected by it. And I AM affected by the things that affect societal progress, which religious beliefs hinder. If you can't see why people believing evolution is fake and the null hypothesis isn't important and prayers work and morality is absolute is harmful to everyone in that society, then you're not looking at the bigger picture. Zoom out of the focus on the individual and look at the society as a whole.

As a Christian, I totally understand where Bo's coming from.. the fake persona of people in church, how everything's practically shoved down your throat from a young age. And, yes, there are many questionable things in the Bible that we tend to ignore.. but I guess I'm not 100% Christian as I don't follow the Bible completely, I just take bits of it and try to live my life as selflessly as possible. I like the Bible for the inspirational messages, I guess.. but, yeah, he makes a good point, MAN wrote the Bible as much as we want to convince ourselves otherwise. However, the part about slavery is very controversial as 'slaves' isn't taken in the same context as it is in modern day..the majority of slaves were more like indentured servants who were given shelter and food in exchange for work. But I'm no expert, so I won't pretend to know exactly what they meant.

I relate a lot to the lyric "Thank you for making me rich and white". I'm a Christian from a poorer area, our neighbours are Christians from Nigeria, both our families can feel kinda excluded in our own church sometimes because it's set up for middle-to-upper-class families who've never felt hungry, never had to pick what essentials to buy and never felt scared for their homes before. We want to change the church to help more people like us - there are plenty of churches for the upper class citizen - but the church leaders are happy with how it's currently run and don't want to change it.

"Debra Messing's fingers in a holy place, hail Mary full of Grace" cracks me up every time. I don't know why it doesn't get more laughs it's such a clever line.

I've watched and listened to this SO many times over the years. And it's still one of the greatest things that ever existed.

Crowds kinda lame, didn’t even laugh at the really funny shit.
@calliope_x33 жыл бұрын
I'm reasonably sure they're laughing, if you listen closely you can hear it, the mic is much much more focused on his voice though so it's very hard to hear

I really wish music (whether it be EDM or Rap) that use an orchestral mix had their own genre.

It's definitely not the record scratch. It comes shortly afterwards, it's very subtle.
