The movie theater experience can be awful at times. While I still love going to the movies, there is no denying the magic has been lost over the years. Rude people, dirty bathrooms, overpriced food and drink and so much are now common place at the movies. Cody Leach and I share our most miserable movie theater experiences!

In Sweden when I was watching Ang Lee's The Hulk I had the whole movie theater for myself. But I lost the sense of luxury when two janitors turned on the lights, entered and started doing loud carpentry work on the row of seats in front of me for five to ten minutes. They then left and almost forgot turning the lights back off. Ruined the scene with Hulk fighting dogs cause my eyes had trouble adjusting back to the darkness of that scene.

Last night I went to see Furiosa, 3 other people in the theater, 2 of them were a guy and lady on a obvious 1st date. The first 30 minutes the guy was just calling out everything he saw on the screen: "Australia!... Chris Hemsworth!... Furiosa!... Motorcycles!" I was ready to pop when he explained to his date what a chariot was. Made a smart, adult decision for once and went out and asked the manager if I could go to another showing down the hall that started 20 minutes later. The other theater was about 1/4 full and much much quieter. What burns me up is that I let the assholes have their own theater, but what cools me off is that I was able to resolve my problem peacefully and enjoy the movie i came to see.

Respect for you for continuing to suffer the cinema experience. I aborted quite some time ago. Literally everything nice has been ruined by “people”. As you say, I would also go in ALREADY on edge just waiting for something to happen. This does not just apply to cinemas. I’m in the Uk, it’s just as bad here. Think you’ve found a nice thing? Nope, it’s already been ruined by “people”.

For me what ruined the theater wasn't necessarily the people, but the fact that movies went from being an impromptu event to something that needed reservations. I remember going to movies as a kid in the 2000s, you'd show up early, line up at the box office, and then pick your seat. It was first come, first served. Nowadays you have to reserve your ticket and seat in advance. A friend and I went to watch the Lion King, (the garbage remake) we were 30 minutes early and all of the seats were taken. And that pretty much killed any desire I had to go to theaters, this isn't a concert, I shouldn't have to plan it weeks in advance. Rude people are just another nail in the coffin.

Worst: The Ring 2 someone came in 15 minutes into the film, talking on the phone through its entirety and explaining what was happening. Apparently she knew management and was asked to stop, she said something, and the manager left shoulders slumped. Best: The Ringer was on and a group of girls were behind me and one girl was LOUDLY crying till some guy said to shut the F up. One girl responded that one of them was broken up with over text just then and the guy said, "No wonder he left you, I'd break up with you. Shut the F up and be depressed outside." That movie sucks, but I always think of that and love that movie

going to the theater is completely different now than 5 short years ago. Theres no one working at the box office. you can buy tickets at a touchscreen kiosk so that means by card only. the only employees are at the concession stand where any kind of refreshment will run you north of $9. all of the movie posters are digital. even the washrooms have some kind of weird Ad screen above every single sink faucet just kind of... watching you. and its literally so expensive to go. i cannot stress this enough. its unaffordable.

My funniest theater experience was seeing the first Quiet Place, almost packed theater, and the sound system mustve been turned off accidentally about 3 minutes in. Collectively we thought the movie was literally meant to be silent, everyone started whispering and finally like 15 minutes later some guy got up and told the manager. Manger came in and told us the movie was meant to have sound and the theater went in unison, "well fuck."

I think, especially with younger people nowadays, there are people who will listen to music/whatever on their phones in public, and they either *really* don't give a shit about what other people think, or they otherwise seem to think that what they're listening to is legitimately great, and thus, everyone else will love to hear it too. And they just don't know about the concept of keeping certain things to yourself. I'm sure they're the same people who have loud phone conversations in public places (places where it's not encouraged). I also think it's "main character" syndrome, where this person is the main character in the world, and everyone else is an NPC. Though I also think, on some level, if you knew more about this person's backstory and stuff, you'd have a better understanding of why they're doing this sort of shit. They might go into a movie that you've been looking forward to, but maybe they themselves haven't really been anticipating it and don't think they're gonna enjoy it, and thus to them, it's ok if they pull out their phone and don't really pay attention to the movie. Not to say that that justifies anything, but just explaining why they seem so willing to be "rude." They might even assume that everyone else feels the same way they do (just like we all tend to do - we tend to think that other people share our perspective in many situations where that may not be the case), so they may legitimately be thinking "nobody gives a shit about this movie - they won't care that I'm on my phone. They're probably on their phones too." In the end, it's just a lack of spatial/self-awareness, and I think we all suffer from it in certain situations, to a certain degree (like when you stop at an entryway to a store because you see someone you know, and you start talking to them, not realizing that you're blocking everyone's way - granted, I have terrible anxiety, so I'm almost always aware of where I'm standing and if I'm in anybody's way, but I'm sure even *I* have done it on a few occasions). I hate when I have to get up during a movie and cross in front of people, to the point where I'll generally try to avoid it at all costs - because I don't like when other people do it to me (especially if they do it a lot in a short time-span). So even if I badly need to pee, I'll usually just wait it out. I hate putting myself in situations that might make other people mad at me - but obviously there are plenty of people who just don't feel the same way about things.

I don’t see horror movies in theaters anymore. Every single solitary time I go, there’s a black couple with a god damn crying baby. In 2019 I actually got to sit next to a baby in an R rated movie and I swore off horror in theaters forever. Then I saw Barbarian in theaters because I wanted to give it a shot….. THERE WAS A BABY WATCHING COCOMELON WITH THE VOLUME ON!!!!!!! Now I will say, I think the streaming stuff is keeping most of the knuckledraggers away. I have seen a lot less phones even though I go now more than ever.

Oppenheimer was weird because I initially felt the same way - that I couldn't hear like 30% of the dialogue. But the more I think about it, the more I remember being able to *technically* hear the dialogue, but the loud music was kinda distracting me from really paying *attention* to the dialogue. I think in most cases I could tell what was being said, but just couldn't take any of it to heart because I was too busy focusing on the music, so the dialogue would go in one ear and out the other. Regardless, it still *felt* like I just couldn't hear it while it was happening, so it had the same effect.

I've stopped going to movies on weekends or Tuesdays unless it's a fathom event/special event on those days. I've had the stinky people who don't shower at all, people who eat/drink as loud as possible, the ones on cell phone entire movie blinding everyone around. I can deal with whisper talk as long as it's brief and not all movie. One time someone tried to take me seat with my drink and stuff already there when I left for the bathroom and when I shooed them they tried taking someone else's seat. Manager booted them off to their own seat thankfully.

For me here in Germany, even with almost half an hour of commercials (not only Trailers, real commercials) in front of the movie, people still come in late. During Oppenheimer someone took his phone out and started filming the Trinity test. And here we don´t even have that model of paying a fee and you can see as many movies as you like per month. This was such an enjoyable listen. 😂 We need a double team up of Adam and Cody taking out the theatre people trash in Olinger describing style.

right! and omg late people...took my son to a matinee showing to Transformers Rise of the Beasts for his 9th bday on July 25th so a Tuesday almost 2 months already and I figure not too many people right? Well in the beginning of course nope just a handful of us and we were enjoying r snacks and the previews and the quiet experience -- but like u said after the 1/2 hour of damn previews and 15mins into the movie which is of course is one of the main sequences of the movie - apprx 30 more people storming in with all the food and drinks and ALL with younger children! Then of course they are not being quiet -- opening and rustling their bags of chips, candy and popcorn etc but then too 1/2 way 3/4 into it their younger children have to go to the bathrooms!?! ugh. This is exactly why people now just wait to experience movies at home...stretched out, with whatever we want to eat and drink, NO previews, NO phones, quiet and can always pause the movie it if a bathroom break is needed.

I'll only go to Alamo Drafthouse. Small theater, great service, no kids, rules enforced as noted in this video. Last time I went to a regular theater, I remember far too many people too cheap to get a babysitter.
@bmasters1981
@bmasters1981 11 ай бұрын
And because the parents were too cheap to hire a babysitter, too many small children have been forced into seeing films that are nowhere near appropriate for them (like hard-R films with plenty of language, violence and sexuality [enough to choke a horse]); some children may not have actually wanted to be there in the first place, so in essence, you cannot blame the children for yelling and carrying on; you have to blame the parents for making them be there.

I stopped going on weekends or night shows because it was just getting that bad and almost got into a fight with a guy about 4 years ago because I told him to put his f@@king phone away. It was like 45 mins in the movie, and he had it out texting the whole time. It's just not worth it, I go on weekday afternoons from time to time, but the movie theater experience died way before Covid. The only movies that I've watched in theaters this year was Scream 6 and Super Mario Brothers but I waited until they were out for a few weeks and basically saw them in an empty theater on a weekday early afternoon showing. I used to love the movie theater but people f@@@@d it up and they probably should just go the way of the video store at this point.

I rarely have a good experience in a cinema, mainly due to the people, but also the seating is almost always uncomfortable. My worst experience was watching Avatar in a cinema and someone sat next to me, opened up a paper parcel full of fries and a full on fried fish. It was the UK, so it had vinegar on it, the smell was repulsive, the sound was obnoxious, it went on for the first half hour of the film. A truly awful experience.
