Black Sabbath are the godfathers, and inventors of metal music. They are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Tony Iommi, their guitar player, is considered one of the greatest riff writers in rock history.

They certainly popularized the sound but I'd argue that the true inventors of the sound were The Kinks who were doing distorted riffs as early as 64. Also, The Who innovated before Sabbath like destroying their equipment to feedback.

The Iron Man in this context is completely separate from the Marvel superhero. In fact, the songwriter, Geezer Butler, had no idea there was a superhero named Iron Man when he wrote it. This Iron Man is a simple man who witnessed the devastating future of mankind. He travels back in time to warn Earth of their demise, but he is turned to steel through the magnetic field in the process, thus becoming a Metal man, dubbed "the Iron Man". He still attempts to warn the Earth but no one wants to listen. They look at this strange metallic being and don't take him seriously. After trying hard to warn them, he becomes angry and decides to unleash chaos on the Earth to destroy humanity. It's here where he realises that the destruction of the Earth he saw in the future was his doings here.
@captainkendall7886
@captainkendall7886 3 жыл бұрын
If you think about about it, Tony Stark iron man kinda follows this arc. He has a metal suit. He traveled time to save humanity And then kills a lot of people( thanos’s army) I know that he doesn’t destroy the world, but some of the points in the song are a part of the real iron man.
@TheBlackQueen
@TheBlackQueen 3 жыл бұрын
@@captainkendall7886 Eh, I get what you're going for but it's really two entirely different boats and seas. The deaths involved and the purpose for time travel are drastically different from the Iron Man in the song.

God I dont know how to explain it but thats just creepy to me. Imagine doing that and then realizing the carnage you've caused that now cannot be reversed. And it's all because of your original simple minded actions. You see the very destruction you caused without knowing that it was you and decide to warn everyone which then leads to them thinking you're crazy which THEN leads to you inflicting the destruction you saw. Creepy man.

Black Sabbath pretty much created Metal. These men were the first to try that sound in the 70s. In 1968 they were a jazz band called Earth. I think you can hear some of they're Earth stuff online. The guitarist Tony Iommi has a signature sound in part to him losing his fingers in a factory accident and he tunes his guitar strings low. This was the first band that Ozzy Osbourne was in that went world wide, until he left in the late 70s and started his solo career by the 80s. Sabbath had line up changes through the decades. But the main staples were Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler. I would love to have been around when they first came out. Could you do a reaction to Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath? You won't be disappointed. Bill Ward was the original drummer but he had a falling out with the band and eventually left, he came back for a few stints but that was pretty much it. Sabbath closed the book a few years ago.

Black Sabbath is composed of Tony Iommi on Lead Guitar, Ozzy Osbourne on Vocals, Bill Ward on Drums, and Geezer Butler on Bass. They're all considered to be massively influential in many different genres of music from Metal to Hip Hop. Ozzy was kicked out of the band in 1979 and went on to be a very successful solo artist working with guitar gods such as Randi Rhoads and Zakk Wylde. Black Sabbath continued on without Ozzy, with Ronnie James Dio taking over vocal duties - and continued producing amazing albums for decades.

I noticed you mentioned the drum work a few times in Sabbath songs. Bill Ward was interesting in that his base was as a jazz drummer. Maybe that is part of the appeal.

I bought this album, Paranoid, in 1970 when it first came out. Must have listened to it thousands of times. Was pretty heavy for 1970! And the legendary lead singer Ozzy Osborne is a legend! Please react to Blackbird by Alter Bridge! PLEASE! ❤️🤘🏼

Tonni Iommi, Black Sabbath's Guitarist was working in a mill (pretty sure) right before their first major show and ended up getting the end of his fingers (the ones pushed down on the neck) cut off!!! Dude healed, didn't take that as a defeat... got some metal thimbles (for sewing)... put them over his nubs and kept playing and never stopped!!! That also adds some kinda tone(s) to his playing.

This song is also heavily sampled in rap music. I mean imagine where would rap music be without vulturing music from real musicians? I know they pay for the samples but still rap wouldn’t exist if not for the real music created by real musicians. I love to see young people go down the rabbit hole and learn about real music.

i don't recall this song being sampled in any hip hop songs. maybe i'm just not listening closely enough. perhaps you could give me some examples? i do know though ozzy's "crazy train" is heavily sampled in "let's go" by trick daddy ft. twista and lil jon.

Tony Iommi, the guitarist, actually plays with fake finger tips on the fingers of his fretting hand. Apparently, right before they got signed to their record label, he was working his day job at a factory and lost his fingertips. He had fake fingertips made that slip on his severed fingers like sewing thimbles. This helped shape their music into the dark sounding, tuned down stuff we're familiar with. He needed to tune his guitar strings down to make them looser, with more slack in them. Hence that deeper, ominous sound we equate with Black Sabbath. The loose slack in the strings made the guitar work less painful for him. Talk about a twist of heavy metal fate! 🤘

The Road Warriors, if you you watched wrestling in the 80s used this as entrance music. It's famously called "The Road Warrior pop" for how crazy the fans would get. They always got the loudest reactions and other wrestlers strive to get that pop to this day.

I've read through the comments a ways and no one has mentioned it, so I will add this here. In 1970 Stan Lee was listening to the radio and this totally fire new song came on that set his imagination off. It was called Iron Man and he created a comic book character from the inspiration he felt from it... The comic book character came from the song, not the other way around!!!
