I'm so glad you enjoyed this video! He wrote this song either while he was going through a divorce or had just gotten one, so it is a very personal story and he put his whole heart into it. I've loved this song since it first came out. He is a very talented artist indeed. He in in failing health right now and it makes me so sad.

Phil Collins Is a prime example of a true multi-talented musician-vocalist, songwriter The list is endless. Back in our day You had to be able to bring the goods. You were not gonna be famous if you could not sing, write music, play instruments You had to have the talent.

Not bad for a drummer “who sings a bit”! 😊One of the best drummer ever!!! He joined Genesis in 1970 as their drummer. He did some backing vocals to the singer, Peter Gabriel, and also as the singer on 2 tracks up until 1976. Peter Gabriel left 1975 after the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour and the search for a new singer began. After MANY auditions for a new singer, the band decided that Phil would be the new Genesis singer. They released the 1976 album A Trick Of The Tail with Phil Collins on vocals and drums. For tours they hired an additional drummer, Bill Bruford and in 1977 they hired Chester Thompson (the other drummer in this video) who played on tours. Phil Collins is one of only three artists that has sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and with a group. The other two is Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. A busy drummer “who sings a bit”!

Great reaction, this a one in a million live performance! Phil was the drummer for Genesis and became lead singer after Peter Gabriel left the group and they couldn't find a suitable replacement. This was one of Phil's 1st big solo hits and he shares the distinction of being only 1 of 3 musicians to sell 100+ million albums both as a member of a group and as a solo act. The other two are Michael Jackson (the Jackson 5) and Paul McCartney (the Beatles). If you're interested in listening to the rest of this concert, here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbaqpb1els2RZ4k.html. This was in Paris, 2004 and this song was a little over half way through the concert.

Great enthusiasm. 👍Yes, Phil has to time that slow walk around the stage up to his drum kit exactly and precisely so that him sitting down at his drum kit coincides exactly when its time for that huge drum fill to come in. If he's 3 steps away it will look awkward and won't work. Its got to be timed exactly. So not only that precise timing, but Phil wrote this song to start out quietly and slowly without any drums at all until that drum fill. That was to build up the mood, the suspense, the anticipation. You can clearly listen to him lay out the story, you're wondering what this song is about, and that tension builds and builds, then explodes in his anger and emotion when he sits down and smashes those skins with his signature Gated Reverb drum sound which this song introduced in 1981. Its an iconic song in rock history, and this is an iconic great performance. So its both the precise timing and the tension and build up. I saw Phil perform this song live 4 times in concert. Each time was spine tingling and just awesome to hear live as that drum fill kicks in, even though I knew the song intimately. It was always the highlight of the concert. Just an amazing songwriter, singer and one of the best drummers ever, for GENESIS and his solo band, for BRAND X, and on many many other artists records. If you like that heavy drum sound, you should listen to and REACT to these Phil Collins great drum songs: 1. INTRUDER>Melt album, 1980 by Peter Gabriel, Phil drumming, first song with Gated Reverb effect on drums. Created for a creepy eerie atmosphere. 2. I DON'T CARE ANYMORE>Phil Collins 2nd album, Hello, I Must be Going. 1982. This song starts out with that heavy angry drum sound. 3. MAMA>Genesis self titled album 1983. Another song that starts with no drums, builds up in intensity, then a big heavy drum fill. Huge Genesis hit. 4. EASY LOVER>Philip Bailey w Phil Collins duet. 1985 More of an uptempo Motown type tune, sung by both, Phil plays the drums on the song, big heavy drumming. The video for the song is what you should watch. (If you want my recommendations as to which live versions to react to, let me know and I'll help. It would be cool to react to the first 3 all in one video, or all 4 if possible!).

Mr Collins is a legend! This took me back to my youth and you know, there is so much music out there today, good music but...the oldies...the oldies! Back then, no auto tune, no fancy arrangements, just raw voices and a few accords but so darn good! All sort of music from old school rockers like Queen, Sweet, Ted Nugent, Nazareth, Joan Jett, Janis Joplin...to the pop era artist like Beatles, Dusty Springfield, Sonny & Cher, and the "Blue Eyed Soul" guys Righteous Brothers...I could go on forever!

I grew up listening to Phil & Genesis. Always been a huge fan. It breaks my heart to see his current health conditions. I remember seeing a comment once about Phil looking like "Your best friends dad, except he's a mega-star." and it's always stuck with me because it's just so true

I so loved your reaction to Phil, this was one hell of a performance, a masterpiece, and when he hits those drums....just wow !!!! One of our greatest performers and I am so thrilled that you enjoyed this as much as we did at that time. Thanks so much.

You have to watch carefully because it’s a visual and music performance. I grew up listening to Phil Collins. He’s beyond fantastic. An actor a musician of many instruments as well as a singer songwriter.

There is no auto-tune here. There is no computer modifying his voice. Master Collins just has a mountain of talent and knew exactly how to sing. Today, you don't see it very often, so remember these musical masters!

That electronically modified background voice is being provided by the keyboard player. He's credited in the description below the video you watched. It was not Phil Collins being double-tracked, or anything done to Collins' voice.

Awesome reaction!!! New subscriber here. Phil is an incredible performer. To me his songs sound better live than the studio versions. Take a look at his Genesis days as well. The "We Can't Dance" concert (Live from Knebworth Festival 02-08-1992 to be exact) is amazing from beginning to end. Also, the live version of "Mama" Live From Knebworth 1990 is outstanding! He's 🔥🔥🔥 with anything he does.
