Metal is a diverse, stimulating genre that runs from folk music to death metal. Sabaton is a Swedish band who music covers historical events, emphasizing heroism, sacrifice, and honor. They do not glorify wars, most of their music is about the horror of war and the individuals who rise above it. They do not pick sides and their songs are very accurate. Their music videos tend to be very cinematic, and their concerts are insane and full of energy. A deep rabbit hole if you chose to go in. Yes, this is the amazing (impossible might be the better word) truce in 1914 WWI. The Germans were singing Christmas carols that the British recognized and began to sing. The two sides started shouting messages across No Man's Land and an unofficial truce was arranged. The generals made sure it did not happen again. And yes, there is a real cross in France that commemorates the truce, I believe place in 1997. As far as other metal types, there are hundreds of excellent metal bands in Europe. Choose a band and try them out. Not sue what your vibe is so I am hesitant to suggest. I will say some of my favorites are Nightwish, Civil War, Ayreon, Saltatio Mortis, Iron Maiden, and Orden Ogan. As other commenters have said, this is about a real event that happened at the onset of World War 1. Two armies that had been engaged in bloody combat for weeks stopped and had a Christmas truce. They exchanged gifts, played games, had a massive Christmas service together and treated each other as friends and brothers. True story. This is a true story about the un-organised christmas truce between both sides early on in the war on the front during the 1st world war. It happened in multiple places along the front. Mostly between British, French and German soldiers. They played football, exchanged chocolate and shook hands. It has been a legend and lesson for all of us living in northern Europe ever since :)

This song is set in WW1 during the Christmas Truce. It mostly took place between British and German troops who believed they would be home by Christmas. However, the war continued and the men were sick of war. So for one day, they decided to stop fighting and see each other as fellow human beings. The war began in 1914 and would end in 1918. And the unfair treatment towards the defeated Germany after the war was a big reason for the outbreak of WW2 over 20 years later in 1939. Also the band is from Sweden

You can never go wrong reacting to Sabaton. One thing I love about this band is that you can point to the majority of things they sing about and say, yes, that actually happened. Generally speaking, Sabaton doesn't make stuff up and it's because history already gives us so much great material.

It's WW1, 1914 Belgium. A true story. If it hasn't been suggested yet check out there song " Bismark" about the German battle ship Bismark the British sank in 1941. Another band is Nightwish, Ghost love score live at Wacken 2013. The female lead singer of Nightwish is married to the drummer of Sabaton,( she also sings the outro /credits of this video) Hannes van Dahl ( the blond guy that got blown up at the beginning) enjoy.

This band has a variety of different style of songs. They have songs like this that have a ballad sound. Then you have really fast and heart pounding songs like The Lion From The North and Hellfighters. You have songs like Carolus Rex and Bismarck that are slower but still very heavy. Then there are songs like The End Of The War That Will End All Wars that are very grand and dramatic. And of course everything else in between.

So, the Christmas Truce of 1914 takes a little explaining. World War One is less than a year old at this point. Both sides are shocked by the sheer ferocity of the conflict. They marched to war in the same old way, expecting to fight for a few months before returning home victorious. What they got instead was a vicious stalemate, with both sides suffering losses on a scale unlike anything seen before. Warfare in the industrial age was far more brutal, far more deadly, and already there were signs that this was going to be a long war. The comes Christmas. All up and down the lines of the Western Front, the soldiers, cold, miserable, and homesick, decided that they'd had enough. Sometimes it was semi-official, with officers working out truces beforehand for things like body retrieval. Sometimes it was spontaneous, with soldiers leaving their trenches of their own initiative. Whatever the case, thousands of men left the relative safety of their trenches, walked across the bombed and blasted no man's land, and shook hands with their enemy. They sang, traded small gifts, and as the music video showed, even played soccer. They also retrieved the fallen in many places, ensuring they could have a proper burial. For one brief, shining moment, humanity won out against its baser instincts. And then, High Command on both sides found out about the truce, and they were furious. They ordered that no further truces of that nature were ever to be repeated. They moved units around on the frontlines, fearful that they might become reluctant to fight men they had bonded with. In the coming years, as the war grew even more desperate and hatred infested the ranks on both sides, no one would want to repeat the 1914 truce.

The song was about a real event . during ww1 just a few months in to the war , the germans started to sing christmass carols in the evening , where the british and french starting to sing as well, warning each others side when they would fire a shot in the air to keep up apearances , and when the germans where cooking their evening meals a french soldier crossed no man land and joined them for dinner this happend along the most of the front lines they even played football exchanged small gifts . Several of the higher commanders where not happy with it as they orderd artilery strikes etc . but the soldiers ignored the orders . it was realy a christmass miracle .

It is a real fact, in the first world war the Pope asked for a truce on Christmas day , nobody say anything but the soldiers go outside the trenches and share the day together, Germans, French, English... And this is the only Christmas song that I like.

All but their first album is dedicated to historical events... 2/3 of which not even me as a military history nerd would have even come across. This is a truly great song from Sabaton. A fun fact is that the choirs in the end is performed by Floor Jansen, the lead singer in Nightwish and also wife (or fiance) to the Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl. The 1914 Christmas Truce is quite well known in Europe, but less so in the US as the Americans did not join WW1 until 1917. Sabaton has been half-jokingly called "a bunch of Swedish history teachers who decided to form a metal band because they'd reach a wider audience". Most of their material is based on military history. Not just the World Wars, either...they just released "Lion From the North" which is based on Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden in the early 1600s. The 1914 Christmas truce of World War I really happened. It was a major embarrassment to both sides, and the top brass on both sides immediately broke up the units involved and transferred the soldiers. They then ordered artillery barrages to make sure such a thing never happened again.

there is a movie about this. if i remember correctly it is called "Joyeux Noël', which means Merry Christmas in french. the movie is good. it describes something that realy happened, a REAL christmas wonder. and i highly adwise you to do some research about world war 1! this was the most horrific war, mankind ever experienced. hell on earth. every human on the world should learn about this war.

I've just come from another reaction to Sabton's Bismarck and they didn't know it happened during WW 2 and that the "Kriegsmarine" was another ship .. while it literally means the War Navy in German. Now you don't know that this is WW1 .. i'm confused, this is basic history of the wars the US participated in ...
