Hey Alex great vocal chain! If I'm using Vocs AI for my rap vocals & they already sound compressed and EQ'd, would it even make sense to add additional compression to the vocals?

Thanks so much for watching! Great question. I'd ask yourself, does it sound finished and how I want it to sound already? If it does, there's no need to over-process it. But if it still feels like it need some extra polish, go for it! Maybe just adding a bit of multiband comp to massage it, or blending in some parallel saturation could do the trick!

Delay first or reverb?

I usually like to do delay first! Once you dial in delay, I find you can get a better feel for how much reverb (if any) is needed :)

Thanks for the comment! For me, counting plugins isn't something I've ever cared much for, it's always about how good it sounds. If it means achieving the sound I'm going for, it doesn't matter to me if it's 6 plugins or 16. As long as I'm not getting latency & the computer can handle it, I'm cool. If you want a simpler chain, check out my latest vocal mixing video - only 4-5 plugins on it. :)

Yeah but when the artist goes to perform live, they can never get close to that sound. If you need 16 plugs on your vox, maybe being a vocalist isn't for you. Just saying..

@@TJ_PowPow I understand your point, but to me it's a different thing. The studio vocal mix is not for changing someone's voice, but for doing what's required to have it sit the way I want in the song. Live music is a bit different than what we're trying to achieve in the studio. Artists don't typically use the exact same chain or plugins for their live vocal, or for the rest of the band, since they're using different microphones and there are several other factors in live music that need to be considered and done differently in the live mix. Artists tour the world with live vocal processing that's different from the the studio mix chain. In the studio, you just go for the best sound. I can respect the minimalist approach too, but in my opinion, if it takes few extra plugins to get where I want to go, no sweat!

@audioedges I get that making the song sound as good as possible is your job, so no disrespect. I've done quite a few live shows and record my own stuff right now. I just think vocalists especially should work with the sound they can achieve live and write/record for that. A lot of times overproduction is a result of lazy songwriting. The artists could've rewritten a part instead of needing 16 different plugs to make it pop.
