Oh, Illithids do have souls. It's mentioned in the Forgotten Realms wiki on Mind Flayers (from a DND Player Guide Book). Withers also confirms this when one of the companions becomes a full Mind Flayer. Something like "Appearance may have changes but they don't mask the one within." so the Soul didn't disappear. My guess is that anyone can keep their soul whose tadpole doesn't eat the entire brain before the body evolves into illithid. Then you may struggle to keep being you, but we know it's possible. If a Tadpole eats all, the new Mind Flayer will have no memory of their previous existences - which isn't the case for Karlach/Player/Emperor.

I only found out recently that devils and demons are two different things in DND. One is like Raphael, the other is a kind of cosmic horror, and when demons try to attack faerun, devils are actually the first line of defense against them. So it's interesting they're evil but not game for just anything that's evil - demons, and I guess illithids too, seem to cross a line that even devils are against..

​@@dreamsalamander Interestlingly, it seems that the war between demons and devils is what keeps Faerun safe from both of them. They stopped their blood war for a time because Illithids invaded other worlds. Which is kinda funny tbh as both of them would do the same if they eliminated the other party in the lower planes.

Once at the beginning, to the paladin and once at the end, when he chastises the Dead Three. Is this to say that Illithids have souls if they retain their previous essence? Or that they have souls when uncontrolled by an elder brain?

I have to believe, if not the emperor, Omeluum definitely has a soul. Spoiler act 3: Omeluum is literally willing to sacrifice himself to save the Duke at the Iron throne. He doesn’t bother mentioning his location, but urges the player to prioritize finding the Duke. I don’t believe a soulless being would be able to sacrifice themself for another.

Imagine if he said something along the lines: Do you ask me about that just to see how will i react? Well, the deal is set and there is no going back. And then game would edit all your save files in this campaign, so there is no going back XD

Killing the Emperor feels better than killing both Raphael and the Elder brain combined. But he died in one turn like a chump so Raphael's fight was much more fun, even if the outcome was less satisfying.

are there any half truths here? If you don't sleep with him and instead show that you aren't willing to blindly follow the program, the emperor admits that he thinks of you as a puppet and threatens to mind control you into a literal puppet like he did with Stelmane. And Orpheus does treat you as an ally because he wants to stop the grand design. So it seems that for once at least, he's being above board here.

@@Potte Unfortunately the Emperor is just mishandled in Act 3. Still interesting, but the fact he's just like "fuck you i'm joining the grand design" if you don't totally bow to his every demand is such a weird about face given how adamant he is that he will never go back

@@DoctorWu23 it does a good job of showing that he's only ever been in it for himself, since he's willing to kill everyone including you for a vanishingly small chance that he might be able to escape the brain later. but it does come off as ridiculous that this gigabrain mastermind squidman thinks that the Netherbrain, which will only get stronger should the grand design succeed, is a better bet than Orpheus who, while understandably livid that the Emperor basically enslaved him, ultimately only cares about stopping the grand design at any cost. The man is willing to turn himself into a squid for the cause, he'd surely suffer the Emperor to live to stop it.

Without Orpheus to shield him from the brain he will immediately become a thrall again and there's no chance that Orpheus would continue this protection so we'd be forced to kill him then and there. Emperor joins willingly because it's the best shot at survival at that point

Orpheus can become one, or Karlah (she actually really into this idea and volunteer on the spot, if she is in the party at the time), or you can convince any of your tadpoled companion to become one. It's very much a choice.

Maybe because devils know how to play with humanity. As soon as The Emperor's mask falls, he starts attacking your humanity, which is what drives most people away from trusting him/siding with him. Raphael knows most "humanoid" beings don't answer well to cold rationality. He could make you the best offer in the world and most would turn it down if it wasn't brought to them with that typical spin of humanity. That sliver of hope. The Emperor, despite being an evolved being, makes the crucial mistake of expecting humans to take the opportunity that seems best at all times. That's not how humans work though. Most of them, at least.

I mean omeluum is pretty benign as far as mindflayers go, he's pretty much ready to give his life for duke ravengard and society of brilliance itself is pretty decent except for the part where they want to steal a githyanki egg

Guaranteed that he's only staying with you because he sees the potential to use you in the future until he inevitably no longer needs you. He has no soul, he's not capable of love, and is only interested in one thing: self-preservation. It's only a matter of time before discarding you is the best way to further that goal.

There's also a lot of characterization in the texts you can find in game - "Decay of morale" books all over his place, notes in Gortash's safe in bank, his letter to Ansur where Emperor himself tells he doesn't feel any emotion. And he fucked over basically every other his ally, Stalmane suffered a stroke because he abused her as his thrall. I just wish game would stay true to Raphael's words about us being beast of burden for him. It's more just a lie to sway us into his deal, I think. It infuriates me that up until the final mission game always subtly tells us not to trust him, and in the end if we do trust him nothing happens. Happy ending just as with Orpheus freed, no difference at all. And we're the assholes for even having doubts about this precious squid. It's ridiculous that we basically need to allow him to betray us. I feel like BG3 is just scared of upsetting someone with bad ending, but it robs other outcomes of their weight.

@@Wanpeld1 a hundred percent. I get that they want you to play the game multiple times, but realistically relatively few people are going to. Is it a good thing that we can't have a complete discussion because the game took some of its secrets to the grave? For how black and white this game's morality is, it seems strange to me that you can side with a literal monster and have nothing visibly come of it. For me, the writing was on the wall when it wanted to enslave, eat, then kill an innocent man, thus damning a civilization to lich slavery, but based on a lot of the comments here apparently that wasn't enough to show them his true colors. It makes sense in-universe that he'd keep hiding them but it's unfortunate that so many people don't realize it.
