It brought tears to my eyes. I'm the old man now. I grew up listening to Neil Young. He wasn't a classic back then, just a cool artist to light up and kick back and listen to.. I never thought I'd be able to relate to the old man. He bought the ranch from a couple of lawyers. He didn't kick the caretaker off of the ranch. haha Thanks for the nostalgic listen.

From Songfacts: “Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man. The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970 (just think about those real estate prices compared to now!). Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused.”

BP Neil was the Young of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. One of the most famous songs he wrote was Ohio. That song deals with Kent State killings by National Guard soldiers. He also rejected commercials using his music in the 90’s.

A few artists don't need much more than a pair of boots, a coat, a guitar and a stool and a stage. Isn't that something? No light affects, no girls, no back up, no electronics. And the whole show goes that way. Excellent. Beautiful. 💗 feuding aside, good times.

Every year, I dedicate this song to my dad, who passed back in 2005 (his birthday, Fathers Day, and on the anniversary of his passing) because every time I look in the mirror I see his face and as I get older and reflect on back on my life I am a lot like my dad both good and bad. Along with "Cat in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin.

I sang this for my Pops right before he passed. I was not raised by him and didn't have much of any kind of relationship with him till I was in my late 20's. I ended up pretty much living the same life he did without even knowing it. We both chased a dream of becoming pro pool players and spent most of our youth on the road playing. He stopped playing when my Mom got prego with me and got a real job, then they split. I'm now in my mid 40's, never had kids to settle me down, so I took that dream much further the he did. So this song and the pool table helps keep me connected with the few memories I have with him.

Love Neil Young. Fun story: we had a Chihuahua for many years who would occasionally whine along with the music in the car, especially when he got older and more crotchety, and he absolutely loved Neil Young. His was the only music the dog would consistently whine to, and he was always in tune. It was amazing; he was the best dog. ❤

I believe the ranch was in NorCal. Marin, or Napa counties? Neil Young was in Buffalo Springfield, who performed the classic, For What It’s Worth (Public Enemy sampled it). Neil Young was also in Crosby Stills Nash and Young, they were a “supergroup” of people known for being in other bands. CSNY performed at Woodstock. And the *final* piece of trivia is that Young and Rick James were in an R&B group together in the mid-60’s based out of Buffalo, NY called the Mynah Birds!

You should also react to: Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young "Ohio" is about 4 protestors that got shot and killed by police at Kent State University in 1970. Crosby is David Crosby, Stills is Stephen Stills, Nash is Graham Nash and Young is Neil Young. There was a good amount of protest songs because it can the message across the nation on the radio. More so than local protesting could ever do.

Neil was living up in Northern California in the San Mateo hills, I accidentally met him helping my friend Johnny at his little bar up there because his bartender didn't show up. It was so busy, I was bartending and he came up to order drinks and I got annoyed because he was ordering them one at a time, then turning around to his friend to see what they wanted, lol. I had always dreamed of meeting him some day, and here it was the moment and I was rushing him, lol. Have to say I was running a fever and ended up with tonsillitis and strep, I just hope no one got it. He wouldn't kick the old man off his ranch, just so you know.

I would add that he has done many concerts to support causes, such as support for farmers in the 1980’s, and the concert for NY after the 9/11 attacks where so many lost their lives.

Louis Avila was the caretaker, and he lived on the ranch with his wife. There was an interview where Neil Young told about Louis taking him on a tour of the ranch and asking how such a young man could buy this ranch… It was $350,000 at the time. Neil Young was newly wealthy from his music, and he told Louis… “Just lucky, Louie, just lucky”.

Fun fact: When he was still living in Canada, Neil Young was in a band with Rick James. They also shared an apartment. They were good enough to get signed by Motown, but when management realized Rick had fled to a Canada to evade the military draft (Vietnam), they found some clause and cancelled the contract, essentially killing the band and even their ability to tour or get gigs. Neil and another member of the band eventually made it to Los Angeles, and the rest, as they say, is history. I’m fairly certain the ranch was in the Los Angeles hills, not Marin. It was David Crosby who made his home in the Bay Area Rick James eventually recovered from the scandal and went on to become a legend in his own right

I love listening to you as you try to disect all of these great old songs!! I think you worked this one out pretty well. It is as if he has recently become very aware that in spite of all of his enormous fame, privelege that comes with fame, and money which he could only dream about a few years earlier, he finds himself alone. He is beginning to grasp that what he really wants and needs is to find his soul-mate. All of his success has led him to live a solitary existence, just like the caretaker. A lesson we all need to learn, is to prioritize our hearts. The possibility of love should be pursued when and wherever it comes your way. You don"t want to be older and thinking back on chances gone, and wondering, what if. Thanks BP!! If you have a baby boy, are you going to call him BP Junior????? ☺🙏

It will always be there for him to roll home too. In other words, dont worry old man, I know you love the ranch and believe the ranch loves you back; I feel the same way.
