The song is based on a book called Johnny got his gun. It’s about a soldier who’s left incapacitated after combat. Basically a prisoner in his own body. Movie scene from film adaptation of the book. Saw this the day it was released. Still get chills. Metallica are ferocious.

The crazy thing is, this was Metallica's FIRST music video. They didn't release a music video until their FOURTH album, during the HEIGHT of the MTV craze of the 80's and 90's, they succeeded at becoming a stadium selling out band purely on live shows, word of mouth, and bootleg tape trading. Very little radio play, no tv coverage, no music videos.
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, fans actually hated this video so much because having a video on MTV, especially one with an anti-war message, was considered a "sell out move" that they literally made an alternate video with just the band miming the song in a warehouse

It's one of the reasons I'm loving these channels. Seeing these younger folks realize how good our music was, and the meaning it has, is actually great. I applaud these people that make an effort to find out what we've known for years... that we likely lived during the best era of music in history. I'm 45 and was a major concert hound, and when I actually list all the bands I've seen live, so many younger people are in awe... and that was just life back then. There was always a show to go to, and an awesome band to see.

This album/song came out in 88. I joined the Army in 89. Sep 90 is when Saddam invaded Kuwait and we started deploying to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield and eventually Desert Storm. "Justice for All" was one of the tapes I took with me to Saudi. This song was always in my mind during that whole deployment/Operation. It would be the worst possible outcome of war, trapped in your body and unable to communicate....trapped inside your own head. It's a sobering reminder of the horror of war. It remained a part of the soundtrack of my career of 22 years. I even got to see Metallica in Germany in the early 90s, when I was stationed in Stuttgart. Back when music had MEANING and made you think and feel. Great Reaction.

The movie in the song is "Johnny got his gun." It is a very good movie! The nurse was cutting off his oxygen but was stopped by the military officer. She feels sympathy for Johnny. There are some other very sad scenes with the nurse. The closing of the door was them putting him "away" since he can't see, hear or feel the sun. They are just going to leave him there until he eventually dies. He wishes for death than live a life trapped in your own body.

"...product of your profession..." was the line from the "Padre" to the doctor. The Padre basically said, you are keeping him alive instead of letting him pass on, so you deal with it. The end with the nurse...she tried to put him out of his misery but was stopped by the doctor. He was still alive after when wheeled into the room. The doors closing and lights fading was just the end of his chances for release. Lost and forgotten in some room to be alone in his own thoughts, whatever they may be.

This song is a mindfuck. As others have mentioned, it's based on the film "Johnny got his gun", which was based on the book, which was based on an actual WWI soldier. He was wounded, left blind, deaf, and a quadruple amputee. He was actually carted around like a circus attraction, while basically shut inside his body, unable to see, hear or move. Just left in pain, silence and darkness with no awareness of the outside world. If you think that's bad, try listening to Motorhead's "1916", also about WWI, but will hit you in the gut even harder. Sabaton also covered that one, but the original from motorhead with Lemmy singing is far more emotional. I've seen some of the biggest, baddest men I've ever known break down in tears from that song. "1916" is based on a British-led battle in which 19,000 men in total died in one day (10,000 British soldiers among them).

The book about WW1 on which the movie was based was one of three banned for troops to read during WW2. The other two were enemy propaganda. “He’s a product of your profession, not mine.” was the chaplain telling the doctor he should have been allowed to die and there was nothing he could do. The nurse tried to kill him but didn’t succeed. For religious reasons and for medical pride and curiosity he was kept alive indefinitely.

The scenes in this video are from the 1970's movie, "Johnny Got His Gun" and the associated book. Johnny was a soldier in World War One. He is caught in an explosion that leaves him with no arms, no legs, no face, no ears. He cannot speak, hear, or see - fed through a tube and breathing through a respirator. I have always interpreted the cut scenes within the song as what is happening to Johnny in the real world. The moments of the song where Johnny is "thinking out loud" are his conscious mind, and James Hetfields voice is his subconscious mind. This was triggered - for me - by Johnny's line, "I don't know if I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering?" From that point on, the music builds and builds, which - again, to me - signaled the growing conflict between the two sides of Johnny's mind as he dips further and further into insanity. By the time Kirk Hammett's guitar solo hits, (and hits hard), I've always pictured that as the final "battle" between Johnny's conscious and subconscious mind, with the final "S.O.S. Help me..." mantra at the conclusion signifying that Johnny's mind is the same as his body, reduced to "one" singular, autonomic thought. Nothing else of him remains from that point forward. Johnny has gone, and only the breathing corpse remains until he would die of old age. At the end, the crowd singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning" symbolizes how society went on and forgot about him, (and the veterans in general). If you listen to this song from that perspective, you will be bawling by the end.

Our understanding of suffering is mostly relative to what we experience, most of us aren't able to comprehend the worst of it. I often tell people if you think you have it bad, you could always be Clive Wearing. Clive Wearing was a successful music conductor who contracted a form of encephalitis that attacked his central nervous system. The majority of his memory was wiped out coupled with an inability to form new memories. He is 85 now and likely still spends his day filling a journal with entries like this: 8:31 AM: Now I am really, completely awake. 9:06 AM: Now I am perfectly, overwhelmingly awake. 9:34 AM: Now I am superlatively, actually awake. In the seven seconds he has to construct a thought he goes to write in his journal, seeing an entry that he does not remember making, draws a line through the old entry and then puts his new thought down before he forgets it and gradually starts marking his entries to dictate to himself which entries were really him. It's nearing 40 years since his infection.

It's an amazing movie that will make you feel something if nothing at all you will see 1st hand the struggles these men and women go through after returning messed up mentally and physically. Also a movie calles Ameican sniper is also a great true story, imo both these movie aren't your normal war movies these will touch your heart and help understand a little what soldiers go through after returning from a assignment. Sad God Bless and love to all the U.S.A soldiers!! Thank you!!

Fun fact - the intro notes are sampled into the beat for Eminem's "Same song, same dance".

Highly recommend y’all get into the Metallica library and dive deep. Personally I’m not a fan of much that came out after their self titled release usually referred to as the black album but anything off of that and their earlier albums are amazing. Master of puppets would be a great song for you to check out.

The key to listening to this song is to slowly raise the volume up the whole time, so at the end the lyrics take a back seat to the sonic avalanch of those final riffs.

Been a min since been on this channel but dang bro good catch on your female. Cheers 🎉 You popped up when I searched One reactions. This gonna be good for sure. This song is an epic piece that I’ve listened to for years and would sing to myself in my head when I would go though traumatic times (Healthcare can be a bitch working in trauma units). The chorus is so dope.

Dalton, the man who wrote "Johnny Got His Gun," wrote the book after visiting a home for injured WW1 vets. He claims to have seen a man in this condition and it haunted him. The book is fantastic, and the last few pages turn into a hell of an angry rant.

The cut scenes pretty much tell the whole story and still people grasp to understand it. Imagine going to war and getting hurt so bad that you wake up trapped inside yourself, not able to speak, move, eat or breathe without a machine, still conscious and yet unable to communicate with anyone. To me is one of my worst nightmares, ending up like a vegetable....there are some fates worse than death.
