Rare 1930s or 1940s Eb Soprano Flugelhorn next to a Bb Benge Flugelhorn for comparison.

BRASS FROM THE PAST: Rare 1930s or 1940s Eb Soprano Flugelhorn. Possibly made in France or Italy. No makers mark other than a stamp on the bell that says “LA SIRENE 2”. I am holding the Eb soprano flugelhorn next to a Bb Benge flugelhorn for a comparison of the size. Anyone have any ideas about this horns origins? Listen to sounds from the past. About 80 or 90 years ago more or less. Rodgers & Hammerstein: “Edelweiss” from “The Sound Of Music”.

Thank you for posting this. The Eb Flugel is one of the great brass mysteries. Few to no recordings despite several well-known makers including it in their catalog. I have to wonder if the La Sirene is from the municipal band "La Sirene" in France that would have used such instruments in the first half of the 1900s.

I play Mahillon high-Eb flugelhorn (in Italy "sopranino" or "flicornino") from about 1910 ❤️💕❤️💕

Beautiful sound, very rare instrument but it seems in remarkably good shape (and in tune!) despite its age.

I have really liked flugelhorns since I heard Chuck Mangione. I don't know much about them, but some day I'd like to learn to play one.

Dunno why, but most makers stopped production a long time ago. They were very popular in the 19th century. A few European makers are still producing them, but they're hard to find, and usually special-order. They were pushed aside mainly by the Eb soprano cornet. But some European bands still use these horns instead of cornets. Unless you speak the language, however, navigating the websites is a royal pain.
