Legendary original school quintet Funky Four Plus One performing their Enjoy Records classic “Rappin and Rockin the House” live at NYC’s The Kitchen in 1980.
From the event “Dubbed in Glamour” - one of three consecutive nights in late November of that year devoted to the creative women of the downtown music and art scene curated by art writer Edit DeAk and featuring Tina L’Hotsky, Anya Phillips, Pattie Astor, Cookie Muller, Debbie Harry, Bush Tetras, Vivienne Dick and others (peep the original poster art image in the gallery).
Sha-Rock‘s performance with her upper Bronx crew was apparently a highlight of the program and it’s easy to see why based on this.
The Funky Four: K.K. Rockwell, Li'l Rodney C!, Keith Keith, Jazzy Jeff & Sha Rock

She's better than everyone because all the rest had their entire life to figure it out and practice and essentially copy, She had to "come up to speed" in a matter of months (maybe a few years from the very 1st) , that's genius. AND it was not cool back then as it is now so negativity from most ppl, unlike now, not to mention no $$. It's like the kid who get's an A studying the night before vs the kid who get's an A and studied all year and went to summer school.. (and yeah, it's not from a google search, we there doin the same, well trying ;) )

Sha Rock was clear and her Rhymes were strong. She was definitely the prime example of what a female MC should sound like. If anything she should be in the R&R hall of fame by herself. Ahead of anyone you can even think of.

The only other female hiphop artist who has her talents, at least lyrically; coming from a person born in ‘83, is Lady of Rage with her song Afro Puffs. “Read. Learn a new word everyday, and study the rhythm and flow of poetry” (Lady of Rage, 1994??? And idk).

CRAZY! This footage is nearly 40 years old, shot in low light and looks like HD. Not only is it captured well but it has captured a moment in time that many of us wish we could transported back to. A moment when the music was raw, exciting and pure! This is incredible!

Someone's spent a lot of time on it. It certainly has anti-shake processing used on it to keep the crew steady (see the background and mic stands bouncing around). It works so well actually. The footage must've been bouncy as f to start off with. Someone loves it, they really took their time and did a cracking job on it. It looks amazing.

OMG, where did you get this?? It should be archived at the Smithsonian! This needs to be preserved for future generations. I was a big fan of the group back in the day just based on their tapes and then their records. I was too young to see them live and I missed their TV appearance on SNL, so this video is a welcome surprise. My given name is Rodney and my middle initial is C, so you can guess who my favorite member of the group was...after Sha-Rock that is.

And I’m positive someone will preserve the ones on KZfaq my friend. Sometimes regular, intelligent, everyday people know what should be preserved better than all these huge corporations. I mean look at how Paramount and Universal treat their treasures? (Like crap lol) a few years ago the set used to film Lon Chaney’s phantom of the opera was torn down, Universal tossed the last mold of Bruce (from Jaws) in a junkyard. If it weren’t for “some guy” who found it, realized what it was, thought ‘man this shit is fucking cool’, and half restored it then an iconic prop would’ve been lost forever. Thankfully the jaws prop is 💯 restored and on display in a world class museum. Might have to Google it. Hope my long winded story proved the point I was making about sometimes people are better at knowing what needs to be preserved than big companies

In my opinion, there are only few groups who have made Hip Hop/Rap a fully fledged musical art form in its own right! Funky 4+1 are one example of that. To do it whilst having a female in a male dominated genre whilst not over sexualising her, but treating her as an artist in her own right should be championed a lot more! 1980!!!!!!!!!!

This is real old school, I still have this jam on vinyl in pristine condition in a couple of different 12" versions in my rap collection. I bought this record in my teens when rap was making its way to the west coast. I live in California and when I heard rap for the first time with Sugar Hill Gang and then I found out about this group and my mind was blown. Rap would not be played on the FM radio band till many years later. I used to record mix shows on Friday and Saturday nights off the radio from 1580 KDAY (Static noise and all). I consider this era of rap real talent because there was some thought that was put into the lyrics of rap jams. This is the reason I also love the Beastie Boys, because they had the same Old School rap style and they constantly played homage to various old school old school rappers and rap groups. There are too many groups to mention but Funky 4 Plus 1 More, Spoonie Gee, Sequence 3, Marly Marl and MC Shan, Biz Markie, and many others are still some of my favorites. Both east coast and west coast artist brought their own style to the Hip Hop scene before it became a negative thing with more of a East against the West Coast hip hop feud. I never understood why Hip Hop artist would get into this type of exchange with each other and then they would start getting negative with the Old School hip hop artists. I think this was all just a result of money hungry music producers that fabricated these feuds to help sell records. Props to the Old School and the New School artist that represent positively and continue to push the true art of Hip Hop which has managed to span the globe and it all started in small neighborhoods in the east coast and west coast with artists that are now legends of Hip Hop. From an Old School Pop Locker on the West Coast.

SHA ROCK is nice with it!!! Her breath control is crazy! Back then you didn't see anybody except some videos. MTV hadn't even started playing Flash, K.Blow, Run-DMC yet. Video Music Box hadn't started yet either.
