Man, it's awesome to see A-4s still being flown. They have excellent maneuverability, and even though they are a subsonic platform, they're still pretty fast.

The A-4K's (ex New Zealand) Draken use for combat training are even better, they were modified here with much newer avionics, and with modified wings.

I was an engine mechanic on the P&W J-52 used in the A-4 and A-6 from 1969 to 1972. The A-4 was so easy to work on! Two mechs could pull the engine in about 45 minutes and reinstall it in about the same time. The bad part was servicing the forward "Hell Holes" where the accessory drives were when the engine was running. It was beyond loud and, yes, my ears still ring to this day. These two aircraft look very different, most notably the tail pipe and the speed brakes. Still a gorgeous plane and hard to believe the design has been in service for over 65 years. Semper Fi!

@@allywharton5745 These are not the ex New Zealand Skyhawks. The NZ A4s were modernised in the late 80s, early 90s. Which included new avionics, electronics, wiring, radars, cockpit displays, and new spars and wings. Along with new generation smart weapons etc. This refurbishment/upgrade contract was awarded to Smiths Industries Avionics Corp. And the work was carried out by Safe Air Aviation at their facilities in Blenheim NZ. The upper avionics hump you see behind the cockpit on these A4s, was removed.

Two beautifully presented aircraft. Great to see these birds put to good use. Still have great memories of popping over to Ohakea from Palmerston North for the A4 Arrival Open Day. I had regular on-base liaison with the Photographic Unit at Ohakea over the years and my ears are still ringing from tinnitus caused by those screeching high speed low passes along the runway just to let the Base Personnel know they were kings of the sky.

I remember watching Skyhawks in the circuit at Ohakea when on a trip to New Zealand, there used to be a branch of the RNZAF museum at the base with a cafe and viewing terrace. We were lucky on that day as there were 4 Skyhawks doing local training flights and circuits. The following year the then Prime Minister of NZ scrapped the fighter arm of the RNZAF and I believe gave most of the Skyhawks away!!

What does Scotrail82 mean by Draken? The only Draken I know of is a pretty good fourth generation Swedish jet fighter. It's cool watching carrier-based aircraft as they land. Navy planes are built with over-sized landing gear, to handle the rigors of carrier traps (touchdowns at about 700-800 feet-per-minute descent rate with the aid of a tail hook and arrestor cables) and cat shots (takeoffs wit the aid of steam- or electromagnetically-operated catapults. ) Traps are more of a controlled crash, really, with little if any discernible flare and full takeoff power maintained in the flare and touchdown until the tail hook securely If a cable beaks or the hook misses the cables the pilot has to "bolt", ir a rejected landing or go-around, hence the full power at touchdown . As aviation goes that's pretty extreme stuff, especially if its done at night in bad weather with poor visibility without the carrier's running lights illuminated to simulate actual wartime conditions where the ship would be more vulnerable if lit up. Naval aviators' eye balls tend to roll back into their eye sockets just thinking about night traps. They all hate them but recognize the necessity of acquiring and maintaining that skill. When that A-4's little delta wing stalls,it stalls sharply, unlike most light aircraft which tend to have docile stall characteristics. .A-4s were also well known for having an early form of hydraulically boosted controls, which gave the ground attack jet amazing roll rate at its subsonic speeds. In fact I read somewhere that A-4s had so much roll rate, around 900 degrees per second, that pilots were taught to never to use full stick deflection for fear of becoming visually disorientated. At low speeds and altitudes that could be a deadly mistake.

I was in a U.S. Navy land based aviation squadron from 1971-75. We had 4-A-4 Skyhawks as well as 4-ERA-3B Skywarriors, 2-F-4 Phantoms, and a gorgeous EC-121 Super Constellation. They were all a lot of fun to be out on the ramp with as we launched & recovered and took care of them. I called the A-4 the mosquito 'cause that's what it reminded me of...LOL..!! The A-4's were/are very maneuverable and were used a lot in Top Gun exercises and in other exercises and could carry a lot of external stores. The A-4's that we had were hydraulic leakers and a mess to service but I was a Plane Captain for the ERA-3B's so I didn't have to do any servicing on them except refueling....lucky me..!!

Not a fighter. The A-4 was an attack platform (that's what the "A" stands for); a light bomber and for 20 years, a very good one for the US Navy. My squadron flew the E and F models in Vietnam.

I don't see any arresting hooks ? Some where there's combat video of Argentine A-4's attacking the English anchorage in the Falklands. These aircraft are incredibly manoeurvable. In one clip, flying at wave top level good & fast an A-4 is trying to lose a small man portable antiair missile ! I never imagined a jet fighter-bomber could move as intensely as this Argentine pilot made his A-4 that day .Unfortunately the stinger like missile kept right up with him, move for move till ....... I salute those Argentine pilots who fought like lions in 2nd hand aircraft against far superior forces, they were good men.

These aircraft seen here are EX-Royal New Zealand Airforce Skyhawks which in the late 1980s were updated with avionics of the F-16/18 and weapons/programs and updated wings etc. They ended up not losing a single aircraft at "Top Gun" , "destroyed multiple F-16s/F-18s/F-20 Tiger Sharks and even F-15s had a hard time in mock air to air combat with RNZAF A4-K (K for Kahu) Skyhawks coming out on top always. Type up RNZAF Singapore exercises etc to see how good these aircraft were before being disbanded in 2001 after the cancellation of the F-16 Program replacement. Don't underestimate these things
