In my opinion, as a civilian, that pilot is not ready to fly. I also think that flying is not only about the pilots ability to steer the plane, but also to be able to communicate properly. What would of happen if, let's say, equipment malfunctioned, for instance, GPS?

I felt that the Controller was excellent, he didn't show sarcasm or get grumpy as the New Yorker ATC always seem to do However, having said that,Air Traffic Control is the poor man of aviation, shortage of staff, long hours, poor pay and yet everyone grumbles, the airline business is cut throat, money before anything else, time is money, hence the rush for clearences.Airline Pilots,especially the cheaper Airlines push their crews to maximum hours, take risks, and one aspect alone is the burn up of fuel whilst hanging around the hard standing,waiting for a push back, all told Airline operation and its affiliate controls are highly complex and the layman has no chance of ever understanding what really happens in the business. I would hope that people take sympathy and empathy with these guys, whose woraday task is somewhat tougher than managing a business or serving drinks.

Here is what happens when a conversation like this takes place in the air: The supervisor stands behind the controller. If the pilot asks for a change, like a direct routing, the answer will be "Unable at this time." It's also possible that this was a training flight. In that case, if the CFII was earning her money, she would sit quietly, prepared to save the day if there was true danger. This guy was still on the ground. There was no immediate danger. Incipient danger, but none yet realized.

Robert Hadow Not to mention, better to sort it out on the ground. All these people shitting on him isn’t encouraging anyone else unsure of what they’re doing, and much better to admit that then pretend. Especially if it was training that makes sense, except then he certainly should have had a notepad out and had no problem at least copying it. Hi, recently retired ATC weighing in here. I'm not going to pretend that it's easy to do, but there is nothing to be gained by losing your temper/patience with a pilot, so you work like hell to not do that. Everybody's new at their job at some point, everybody has bad days, the key thing is to be calm, keep your head, maintain communication and work towards a shared understanding. That being said ... this ... this was something else.

Something else indeed. I have never flown an IFR route, yet I could understand perfectly what the instructions were. This guy clearly thought he was a hotshot and could recite the clearance from memory and failed. Write it down! I would not have let him take off until he read back correctly - as I had to do as a VFR pilot. I should look up the tail number to see if he made his destination and how many problems he created on the way. Oh yeah. The change to 18... priceless.

I feel the same way. I've always wanted to learn how to fly and took a few lessons in the past, but this seems super complicated. And why does everything need to be done via audio. Arent there newer systems that can transmit the necessary coordinates digitally? I watched one video of a Saudi pilot who literally needed to be told a 4 digit number 10 times before he got it right. Its kinda disconcerting.

This is for an instrument departure procedure.. private pilots wouldn't get a clearance like this unless it was under certain circumstances, even then it wouldn't be like this. If the pilot in the video used the acronym CRAFT, for : clearance limit, routing, altitude , frequency, transponder (code) then it would of made that radio call a lot easier

ATC was just making sure he understood the departure procedure. They are there to help pilots not get angry, and he definitely didn’t seem angry. If anything the controller sounded very helpful with him slowing down to clarify how to fly the procedure , what radial to intercept and where to transition VORs. Only thing that would’ve probably been a little frustrating is once the pilot finally understood the departure he requests a different runway and would’ve received new instructions 😂

This was painful to listen to. I think the controller did an excellent job trying to help the guy out but some people are just not prepared. Before every IFR (or VFR) flight one must be fully familiar with all procedures, no need to memorize things but be aware of the DPs STARs and some of the fixes and VORs along the route. This way everyone's work is efficient. This guy used so much ATC time he should be sent a bill. ATC is not there to teach you things, they are there to help out and organize everything. I sure hope this guy learned from this experience.

Zachary W or he's just new and nervous. I get it's a big thing to be judgmental and self-righteous. I take a "I hope that's never me" kind of approach. So many people never consider how difficult it can be at times when you're at a new airport. I've flown at airports across the country from Reid-Hillview (SFO / SJC) to Van Nuys (LAX) to Addison (DFW TX) to Oshkosh and Appleton WI. All different and all of them have some "local knowledge" truly required to not sound like an idiot. For example when you're flying out of RHV you have to know that if you're taking someone on the "Bay Tour" that they're going to want you to cross SJC (Mineta) over the center of the runway or that at VNY you're not only going to be under the umbrella and not turning before the treatment facility but also that heading east to the practice area between the "mountains", or if you're up in Napa you're going to be pretty much free as long as you don't interrupt the winery tours, or that in Addison you'll be vectored out and in (even VFR) by tower since they fly departures out at one altitude and arrivals at a different one, but not VFR standard because they don't care about ONE mnemonic. So let's all take a step back and realize we aren't perfect and maybe he was just having a crappy day.
@zacharyw4628
@zacharyw4628 7 жыл бұрын
No. The point is he's CERTIFIED to file IFR. That means approaches to minimums, navigation solely by instruments, etc. That's a big deal. The point is it's apparent he doesn't understand the system he is using. I'm an airline pilot based in DFW. I semi-regularly experience a new airport, but the system I'm using is the same everywhere with minor nuances. I understand the structure, and I understood the structure the day my instructor endorsed me to take my instrument ride 10 years ago. This guy doesn't have a plate handy. He took no time going over the DPs before he filed GPS Direct. He learned the hard way that GPS Direct isn't a given in a busy terminal area. I want to reiterate: This guy is certified to fly unknowing passengers into inclement weather and doesn't grasp the idea of a very, very simple SID. It doesn't take local knowledge to open the charts and glance at the DPs of the airport you're departing.

With 89 gallons usable fuel and filed 185 knots, at 9000ft, he's planning to fly at best power 34/3400, if not modified the airplane endurance will be just about 5 hours, and he was in the air for 5 hours, clearly very hard to satisfy the alternate+45min rule under IFR, plus unfamiliar with SIDs, unable to understand and copy ATC clearance, poor planning, these combination can leads to serious accidents

Putting "no SID" on an IFR flight plan is not going to make much difference. Excellent video with "lessons to be learned". Great work and patience from ATC personnel. This video is a great reminder about being prepared not only for what you plan on doing but also for what can happen if something goes wrong, clearance is not granted, alternate departures, etc. I think that ATC could have recommended/ask the pilot if he had all the necessary charts or invited him to come to flight planning (this for the pilot's own safety). I understand that this is not the duty of ATC to train a pilot put for the sake of safety, I believe it is worth it. There is nothing wrong with asking to clarify instructions, as sometimes the controllers speak fast and not everyone has the ability to retain everything they said instantaneously. Now, that said, there is definitely a problem with this pilot, because he appears *_UNPREPARED_* and there is NO EXCUSE for that!! I, myself, am not great on the radio with ATC, but to compensate for this, I "over prepare". I got my PPL at an uncontrolled airport, where most of my 150+ hrs of flight time has been spent. As I'm in Instrument Training right now, I'm getting better at ATC comms, but I know I'm not a "natural" at it, like some are! I make damn sure I know every single VFR checkpoint, VOR, intersection etc. in the vicinity of my flight! I listen to the ATIS carefully, and go over several scenarios that I may expect, be it when I'm coming into the airport or departing!! Unfortunately, this guy appears to have "jumped into" the airplane and decided to wing it (pardon the pun) as he goes along, which is totally unacceptable! And after all of that, he requests to depart from the other end of the runway!! Big big kudos to that controller for keeping his calm!! 😃 .....Most normal humans would've lost it at that point!! I can only imagine how the rest of the conversation went with the controller spending another 10 to 15 minutes, going back and forth, explaining the new procedures!!! 😂
