A level crossing on the Bristol to Exeter Line found within the small village of Huish a few miles to the east of Weston-super-Mare. It is controlled and monitored via CCTV from a signal box next to Puxton & Worle Level Crossing located two miles west of here, and it's found down a quiet lane just off of the busy A370, with traffic noise from that road and the nearby M5 audible in the background here. This, at the time of making this video, is one of only a handful of remaining level crossings on the main lines which have 'Field & Grant' barriers, which are at least around 40-50 or so years old and were among the first designs of barriers used in this country. There are two long full-road-width barriers here, making quite a bit of motor noise as they raise and lower, though the noise coming from the two loud, old-looking and retro-sounding alarms here contends with this motor noise from the large and robust barriers.
These videos were filmed within around an hour and ten minutes or so of each other during a sunset on a late Friday afternoon in December. The sky can be seen slowly getting darker and darker as the video progresses. Throughout this video, which contains six different lowerings, three Class 43 'HSTs' are seen running between Cardiff and Taunton. These are shortened versions of the ones which once ran out of London Paddington, and are called 'Castle Sets' by Great Western Railway. A total of 10 trains including these can be seen in this video.
There is some confusion regarding this level crossing's name. It's within the village of Hewish, though there is another level crossing within Somerset also called 'Hewish', and that's an Automatic Half Barrier (AHB) level crossing found near Crewkerne. The given spelling of this level crossing's name is oddly 'Huish'.
