****Important message below. Be sure to check it:)****
This version comes from a hard to find 1993 release "Different World" Personally I consider it superior to the original slow paced, soft version or Eric Burdon's babbling;)
Lyrics
I was born in a dump My mama died, my daddy got drunk
He left me here to die or grow In the middle of Tobacco Road
I grew up in a rusty shack All I owned was a'hangin' on my back
The Lord knows how I love This place called Tobacco Road
But it's home, it's really my home The only life I've ever known
For the Lord, the Lord knows I love Tobacco Road
I'm gonna leave and get a job With the help and the grace of God
I'll save my money, get rich I know Bring it back to Tobacco Road
I gonna get me some dynamite Gonna bring me a crane
Got to blow you up, got to tear you down And start all over again
But I'll build a town, I'll be proud to show Keep the name of Tobacco Road
'Cause it's home The only life I've ever known I despise because you're filthy
But I love you, 'cause you're my home
Tobacco Road Tobacco Road You're dirty and filthy Tobacco Road
Gonna get me some dynamite Gonna bring me a crane
Got to blow you up, got to tear you down And start all over again Tobacco Road Tobacco Road
I despise, I despise you 'cause you're filthy But I love you, because you're my home Tobacco Road, Road Talkin' 'bout a dirty, low down, filthy place Tobacco Road, yeah
You're so dirty and filthy

Rare Earth one of the greatest bands ever. Sixties and seventies produced the best bands that ever exsisted. There will never be music like this again. I was blessed to have lived and been young during these two magnificent decades. Long live this music.

This is a very strong and heavy version for 93 I enjoyed it a lot, but for me the original 1969 version is untouchable, the atmosphere its creating is so real and the best version in my book the 1969 has that magic. Rare Earth seem to capture the mood and spirit of the song the best.

Have you tried listening to the Nashville Teens version (original artists)? They more eloquently capture the spirit of the lyrics = I was given a shitty deal but made it better. Eric burden lost the heartbeat present in the original and figured adding frills and extra solo's was an improvement but lost the soul of the lyrics which were meant to be driving passion. Music should be allowed to breathe the silences between notes gives them more permanence like a heartbeat each beat is more meaningful because for a time it's missing.

The original. I guess because Rawls went through the discrimination of the south not being able to go through the front doors and having gone through some of what was written. This singer is using almost the same stylistic of the first one being a tenor, not a baritone it's not the same intensity. Is it a good version that is up to what you like hard rock in your face, or the silent intensity of the first. Remember the first no one had heard of this style and the singer wasn't copying anyone but himself which he learned from church and being a backup singer to Sam Cooke. This version learned off this singer. All it is one blast of guitar & electric bass. What is the difference? Guitar, bass & drums in the first song. But the blues is what this is based on, which one do you think sang the blues at the time this was originally performed? Civil rights was just getting starting. I go with the first and not think it's the 'best' of anything but rather the times. Read the lyrics you wrote, who went through it, Lou Rawls or Rare Earth? Slow? Poignant & haunting.
