Here’s some rare footage of the Sesame Street theme park, Sesame Place from 1981-1982. Which includes footage of the theme park itself, production making of the theme park, and a grand opening with an appearance of Big Bird jokingly biting a child’s head.
What’s really interesting about this theme park is that there were sketches made that were exclusively made for the theme park, which some footage of the sketches can be seen in the news report from May 14, 1981. According to the Lost Media Wiki, during its opening in 1980, the sketches would be played on monitors throughout the park at the time, including a two hour video of Bert and Ernie. Some of these sketches were featured in international co productions of Sesame Street like in Spanish and Arabic. However despite the theme park was a huge success the sketches would later be removed from the theme park and they have never been officially released on VHS, DVD, and on KZfaq worldwide, which the only fully available sketches that are online are not in English.
And because of a lack of recordings of people filming the sketches on the monitors back in the day, most of the sketches are lost. The only ways the sketches could surface is that if more recordings of people filming them get found, if a promotional or a production tape exists that could contain footage of the sketches, or if Sesame Workshop will ever release them to the public.
Only time will tell if more material of these sketches will ever surface online. Anyway enjoy these rare pieces of Sesame Street history.
