Kanazawa's "version" of Shushi No Kon Sho was recognizable but very different than what we do today. Also very surprising to see "non" shotokan kata being demonstrated too.

Kanazawa also had a version of Shushi no Kon? Would you happen to know where I can find it or if he studied any other bo katas? I'd like to see and learn what he practised. 😁

Morote Uke in Zenkutsu Dachi... Age statt Mawashi Empi... Morote Empi... Es wäre sicher interessant zu erfahren wie es zu dieser Variante gekommen ist. Arrigatou

By all means! The description of this video (and the other) has some wording we would appreciate having you include in the description of your own and any derivative video. We are trying to keep a handle on people grabbing it without credit (we were lucky to find it, encode it, and spend time subtitling and time-stamping it). If anyone should repost it, you should, and we would love any information you would like to share about it. We understand there may be a gentleman or two in these videos who are still involved in your club!

@@mitakaratekai Our founder, Kazumi Tabata, studied with Master Isao Obata. Master Tabata studied at Waseda and came to the United States at the request of Master Obata. When Sensei Tabata died in 2020, this film was found in his personal effects. We digitized it, took a look and realized how interesting and important it was so we translated it, added subtitles, and uploaded it here. It must have been a gift from someone, perhaps Master Obata himself. Very glad it got preserved this way for you guys, too!

I under stood all. Waseda and Keio are both Shotokan Karate and been very good rivals since established. We held the annual match event. I don’t know Tabata-sensei, but hear our old members about him. Someone knows him probably! Thank you for much information.

Shotokan is such a strong style, which I practiced many years ago. I remember after a few years of learning Shotokan and then I took a Tae Kwondo class over the summer and it just wasn't the same. Shotokan is superior in every way to Tae Kwondo which is a weak style that emphasizes showy tactics that are basically useless. In Tae Kwondo they don't recoil their kicks but they let their leg just hang there. I found this to be really weak. Traditional Shotokan is a great style full of no nonsense, no show for show's sake, and power!

Thanks for posting this, it was very interesting (although sometimes painful) to watch. Some odd little quirks in the Shotokan kata, but the general level of performance was so bad (and in this case, I mean "inconsistent") that I'm wondering whether these oddities were glimpses into the way that Funakoshi would have done the kata, or just mistakes! The Unsu in particular was *very* odd. Also, the level of the Naha te kata and the kobujutsu was a bit of a givaway that these were probably little more than curios that sat outside the main syllabus. The way the guy handled the sai made me think he didn't practice with them very often, and the Sanchin looked like just going through the motions.

Yes! Funakoshi Sensei had his students study kata under other teachers than himself. The collection that stuck with the JKA is different to the one that Keio University kept hold of. Worth remembering that O-Sensei totally rejected the idea of styles, I think!

Plenty of Shotokan folks do Sanchin or Suparimpei or any other kata from any other style they might like to do. You really have to lose the blinkers and stop following blindly those who decide things on your behalf. There are many kata out there, just practice anyone of them you feel like trying. You don't need anybody's permission.

@@Garinm you might be right. I also noticed some differences in the other kata - like the second technique in goju we would do kukotso dachi instead of neko ashi dachi, and in Sochin there are quite a few differences in stances and techniques. One interesting technique was the (I think) uchi uke he did after the yoko geri, and not the conventional empi uchi.

@@nackc So the JKA syllabus has 26 kata....but the Style might have more kata , and kobudo??
@nackc
@nackc 2 жыл бұрын
@@brianp7464 Yes. Shotokan is basically the style taught at Shoto's (Funakoshi's) place. It can be a big tent. Our Sensei Tabata required some bo kata for promotion. Many of our folks have also trained with another Waseda graduate who includes bo in the curriculum as well. The Asai organization people have some kata that were created by Sensei Asai himself. Everything comes down to who's teaching and then you can argue about what "Shotokan" is.

@@matthewbaumann630 there are many segments in this video. I would say it’s an old video of Beginner ‘s practice. It does reveal what’s alike back in those days but it can’t serve as a reference like those JKA old training recording out there. Tons of mistakes out there and fundamentals were wrongfully executed. If you can’t see these point, it’s your skill level. I Cant help.
