Abby explores some rare percussion instruments & speaks with film composers Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, James Newton Howard, and John Powell. You’ve heard these actual instruments in movies, TV, and other recordings, & were owned by the late Emil Richards, an active L.A. studio percussionist for 60+ years. We dive into Emil’s contributions to movie soundtracks - not only because of his incredible, diverse collection of instruments, but his creativity and love of sound experimentation.

Wow! Thank you for sharing the story of Emil Richards and his contributions to film music in America. It’s also wonderful to hear from all the composers and all of the little stories. It was great to see Mr. Bill Conti in another video too!

To see the boobams at their best, go hear the concerto for percussion by Fazil Say. You can see an interpretation by Martin Grubinger on KZfaq. Boobams are in the third movement. Also featured are rototoms, vibraphone, tubular bells, waterphone, marimba and timpani.

This is great. A glimpse through the windows of those classic scoring sessions and the percussion methods used. Fascinating. Emil Richards' credits and contributions are indeed staggering. Thanks! 🙂

I love boobams! I actually made a physical synth model of boobams to be able to use that sound in my pieces

Hi Abby, I have been trying to determine what a certain instrument was that was commonly used in early 1970s Universal Studios TV movies, and I discovered that Emil Richards was probably responsible for it. What an amazing creator! Care to help identify this sound? You can hear it in Steve Spielberg's "Duel" soundtrack (composed by Billy Goldenberg, note that this was originally a Universal TV movie) as well as frequently the first several seasons of "Columbo" (particularly in scores composed by Billy Goldenberg and Dick DiBenedictis). Here's a clip from "Columbo" Season 2; you will hear the strange chromatically-ascending bell-like sound around the 3-second mark: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htBhd5WB162oZaM.html Sometimes it sounds like an instrument with multiple differently-tuned pieces, other times it sounds like a single instrument that is being tuned in real-time. But perhaps you know the deets. I'd love to know more! Thanks!!

So what happened to Emil Richard´s collection of instruments after he died a few years ago?

A good part of it went to LA Percussion Rentals (which I co-own), some went to Danny Elfman, a few pieces went to other musicians and composers, and some is still with his family.

He actually took care of this process over ten years ago; he told us that he wanted the instruments to live-on in the LA music scene, and wanted them to stay together as much as possible. Getting that call back in 2010 was insane.
