The Sega Channel was the same thing over Cable TV and it came out 1 year before the Satellaview. But the PlayCable was a cable TV game service that came out in 1980. It was for the Intellivision.

omg, y'all are my heroes. As the perfect intersection of Japanese-exclusive Nintendo esoterica and lost media, Satellaview is my jam! 🤩 So, fun fact I learned the other day; The Satellaview was supposed to have an HDD. There's an unused "EXT." bay inside it, and according to the original patent, that was for a 'hard disk drive'.
@alexk8792
@alexk8792 23 күн бұрын
Was it really going to have a hard drive on it? If so, then I can see why it was never implemented; would have made it a bit too pricey.

@@alexk8792 Well, the patent documents certainly made it sound like an add-on they'd been planning from the beginning. 🤔 A shame they never got the chance... Satellaview HDD add-ons would have no doubt given the modern archivists a lot more to dig through! 😃

4:00 That rendition of the Dark World is fantastic. Without your preservation, I would have never gotten to hear it, even if it's short and talked over. Thanks so much for this! It's interesting to see what else this promo is advertising. For example, I have never heard of 弟切草 (Otogirisou), basically a visual novel. I'm not quite sure what is being advertised here (the game existed outside of SatellaView so I guess this is just a "downloadable" title here?) but it's interesting to hear about these games too. Incidentally, a fan translation for it has been released just a few months ago! Neat!

This is so cool! I had sega channel and had no thoughts about how absolutely magic it was. It wasn't until I was older that I sort of realized that I had a ding dang cable line going into my Genesis, just like how now it goes into my router.. and the Genesis just downloaded roms and loaded them.. in the 90s!

Awesome video! I'm wondering why Nintendo decided to use satellite technology. I mean, a 14.4, 28.8, or 33.6 baud modem from that era would probably also be sufficient for transferring those tiny bits of addons. Edit to myself: As I was reading Wikipedia about how much a modem cost at that time, it's most certainly the price. Such a modem cost about $250 USD.

Crying shame that Nintendo doesn't make use of modern Internet infrastructure to re-broadcast these for Nintendo switch online... Perhaps some of the rights are caught up in the St. Giga side of things (the satellite radio broadcaster who partnered with Nintendo)

Practically was the most innovative way at the time to play online or receive live updates. That broadcasting feature is practically the precursor to how people did it before live streaming. Basically this made online gaming on consoles as a real possible idea all those years ago.

@@mw9771 That AND Japanese cities are FAR closer together than American cities, which means that getting internet across the country is far easier over there than in the USA where cities are widely separated(which happened in the Cold War era in case the Soviet Union was planning on nuking the USA).

@@Bruno-gq8uo That’s what the PlayStation started out as, Nintendo saw what Sega was doing with Sega CD and decided to work with Sony for their own add-on. Sony and Nintendo didn’t see eye to eye as the project went on and Nintendo tried screwing over Sony, the project fell apart and Sony decided to make it their own console. Nintendo then went to Phillips and together made a terrible deal and the worst Zelda games ever. That served them right, Nintendo in the 90s was downright arrogant.

@@ZachAttackIsBack so I only got the base unit itself, which by itself, is just for display, does make your super famicom seem more complete, much like the Genesis tower of power, Kudofan did mention that it may have a rare game on it, but those are only on the data cards that would slot into the BS-X cartridge, neither of those I got. The BS-X cart itself is worth maybe $15 average, but the data cards that may have rare downloaded games and data on it are around $30 each. May look into getting some of those in the future, but in the mean time...

I find it absolutely hilarious that they were really trying to convince Japanese children that this thing was actually the receiver end of an honest-to-god space satellite that they constructed and launched into reaches of space up in earth's very orbit beaming video games into Super Famicoms, and that there were actual people up there manning these probes dressed like aliens from campy Godzilla films along with it.

Anyone here know which of the first party sound link games were only playable *during* their broadcast? I know the Zelda’s were, but I can’t find any information on if the others were downloadable and playable after the broadcast or not. I’d really like to know about these 6 specifically, if anyone knows: Konae-Chan’s Heartbreaking Penguin Family BS Marvelous: Time Athletics BS Marvelous: Camp Arnold BS Tantei Club: Memories Lost to the Snow Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle Stadium BS Fire Emblem: Akaneia Senki Edit: and to be clear, I’m not talking about emulation, I mean I want to know if any of these are still playable on official, un-modded BS-X cartridges that received the broadcasts in the 90s. Unsurprisingly, my search for this oddly specific information has yielded no results.
