Visit www.leftcoastclassics.com/ to see this 1950 Desoto Custom for sale from Left Coast Classics in Sonoma California.
Another amazing time capsule has found it's way to Left Coast Classics! This well preserved, well maintained 1950 Desoto Custom has only 5,800 original actual miles! Having been driven under 100 miles per year on average, this one truly takes you back in time with so much originality. As you might imagine, its back-story is an interesting one.
Read the controversial story at the link below.
This treasured preservation car is a very special one indeed and begs for its next owner to carry on with its preservation to assure it's continuing survival.
When you open the door you are overwhelmed by the newness of its original interior. The scent of mohair and original wool carpeting and seat fabric is intoxicating, unlike any new replacement interior could omit.
Under the hood it is equally well-preserved, still sporting the original gray paint on the block with super clean firewall still showing grease pencil and "OK" stamps right from the factory. The car starts; runs and drives beautifully with no issues. The undercarriage is amazingly tidy and looks nearly new.
The trim, chrome, lenses, bezels, knobs are all amazingly well preserved. The car was originally purchased with radio-delete. A factory radio was sourced and is included with the car along with an antenna and original speaker. All of the options and accessories are in working order. The trunk is well preserved as well, still sporting it's original spare, jack, chock and ornate trunk mat from the factory.
The body and paint are also very well preserved with a bit of expected patina. The chrome, trim, glass and lenses are original along with the original lacquer paint which has had some touch-up here and there over the years but has remained largely untouched.
Take a look here: www.leftcoastclassics.com/195... for the full detailed description and to see the photo gallery of this original classic.

I saw those leaf spring sheaths and my memory bank kicked in. As kids we often went to auto scrap yards and stripped that lead sheathing off the springs to make fishing sinkers.

My Dad taught me how to drive in a 1950 DeSoto, I would watch the hood ornament while steering. I loved the dash at night, the speedometer would glow blue.

DeSotos were painted at the factory with a synthetic baked enamel, not lacquer which was used on GM cars.

I have a '50 Dodge with Fluid Drive. When I was having some work done, my mechanic lost that brace that goes from the engine block to the air cleaner. I had to go to a junkyard to get another one. The one I picked up had a switch on it, like this DeDoto has. It took me a while to discover it was the kick down switch for the semi-automatic transmission. Apparently the parts car I was cannibalizing had the Gyro-Matic. They used different names for Chrysler and DeSoto, even though they were the same transmission.

There was an illuminated hood ornament available for these similar to what Pontiac had. I guess the original owner didn't want to spring for that accessory. :-)

THERE WAS A DAILY DRIVER UNTIL AT LEAST 1965 IN ANETA NORTH DAKOTA, THE RINGSTADS HAD A GLASSWARE STORE AND HE WAS A WATCHMAKER, IT WAS A 4 DOOR SEDAN EXCEPT THAT THE BACK SEAT FOLDED DOWN, I BELIEVE IT WAS NAMED A CARRYALL.

Really wonderful, but I always worry that a subsequent owner will trash it - and not necessarily by intent, but just by storing it badly. I'm reminded of the video I saw a few years ago of a old man who was selling a barnful of old cars, all of which were damaged or ruined to various degrees. Some obviously had been in beautiful condition when he got them, which he even pointed out himself, but which now were scratched or dented or had junk piled on top of them. Meanwhile the auctioneer or seller guy was happily repeating, "Oh, that'll clean up real nice" or other stupid statements.

Whoa! I am overwhelmed at the condition but the styling is so ... beautiful. The car's beauty leaves me speechless. Thank God there are car preservationists out there to care for these cars. People must understand this history to America, engineering, what white people designed and built in a most competitive atmosphere.
