My parents got me a ColecoVision with the Atari Expansion Module for Christmas in 1982. I still have them in their original Styrofoam packed boxes. I also have several original games for it. Man I loved playing that thing as a kid.

I don’t know if anybody has told you or not but it’s a bad idea to leave any of that stuff in the Styrofoam packing because what will happen is the Styrofoam breaks down or will it start to break down and all that glue and Styrofoam or stick on your cables and everything you can just thought I’d let you know

I recently found out that there was a big Coleco factory in my hometown Montreal back in the 80s, where many classic Coleco toys and video games including the ColecoVision itself were assembled for a good part of North-America. (I have a couple of handhelds and a ColecoVision with a Montreal sticker on the back). Coleco Montreal was situated in a huge industrial-era factory complex built in 1882 that has since then been repurposed into luxurious condominium complex and restaurant. You can still find a small display of Coleco stuff in the building. I grew up in Montreal in the 80s, and I did not know about the Coleco factory, if I did I would've probably taken my bike and go lurk around the place! :)

Loved this episode mate, a really neat enhancement which adds even more value to a system that has been much loved for a very long time by many people. Love how faithful they stayed with its design and presentation, Zaxxon on the C64 will always have very fond memories for me. Much enjoyed, Cheers Dan/Fuzz.

Great review of the module, and games, it really does take the system to the next level, as there are so many really good MSX games and of course it makes it possible to write new original titles that deliver great graphics and sound. Actually, the ColecoVision uses the Z80 microprocessor which when upgraded with the ADAM computer module and sufficiently added to, enables people to run CP/M on it as well as use hard drives, modems, printers. etc.etc. The Graphics chip is the same as the TI 99/4A. Compare the basic character set sometime. One time I went to a classic computer show and people were demonstrating their ADAMs and I made that observation out loud and one guy said "You're very observant and you're right."
@wishusknight3009

The graphics chip was a very slight variant of the TI 9918 graphics chip used in the 99/4. The 9928 simply had a different format to output its signal I think?

Coleco themselves were going to release a super game expansion module in the day. It used a custom wafer tape and played longer versions of games with all intermissions levels etc (Donkey Kong for example was missing the cement factory level, and intermission animations because it would not fit on the cart). I think there were even some RPGs in the works that used the larger memory. I was waiting for that module with baited breath, but it never came to market. Instead they made the Adam and some of those enhanced games (Super DK, Super DK jr., Zaxxon) came out on that.

Microsoft didn't actually create the hardware for the MSX computer. Microsoft created the standard and operating system (modified MS BASIC) and other companies did the actual manufacturing which is why MSX was available under many different brands such as Sony, Panasonic and many others.

I had a Colecovision and the Atari 2600 converter, and was very impressed by it. It went missing during a house move. The MSX was 8 bit at the time when 16 bit (such as the Atari ST) was due on the shelves. The hardware was no better (and arguably less) than a Commodore 64 or Atari 800/XL/XE system, which had been around for some years beforehand. In Europe, where I was involved in the computer retail industry, the MSX machines were far too expensive and software support was virtually non existent. As much as anything this was because the industry was fast evolving and many games producers were more interested in 'the next big thing'.

I have a boxed Coleco Vision and Atari front port adapter I picked up a while back at a flea market. Its a lot harder to keep up with my collection these days unfortunately because all my stuff is boxed up for the most part due to where I live (pointless to unpack it). I have a couple apps on my old iPhone I use to keep up with my snes and nes but I never have that phone with me, so I really am just going off memory most the time, which gets really tricky considering how much stuff I have. Because of that tho I mainly stick wirh my nes and snes collection. One day ill be able to unbox it all again and lay it out, and continue the hobby, full force. P.s.... my memory SUCKS so that is of no assistance.

I don't know why everyone seems to think that Coleco won the lawsuit, when they and Atari actually settled out of court. Coleco was allowed to continue to sell their Expansion Module 1 and Gemini console, but they had to pay a royalty to Atari on every sale. Effectively, Atari licensed their proprietary technology to Coleco for a price.

John/Gamester81-I REALLY want to get a Colecovision, but I have no idea where the best place to find one would be. Any advice? I know that there's a guy on the Atariage forums who sells Colecovisions that have been AV modded, but those are really expensive. And I don't really care about having AV out on a console that old.

A un-modded Colecovision model can go for anywhere between 40 to $85 dollars in the wild if you can find a good deal or have a lot of stuff for trade in a retro gaming store in your area. Honestly anything more than $100 loose is too expensive unless you get a complete boxed system.

Hey David, as you mentioned the AV modded ones are expensive. Try looking on Craigslist and every once in awhile on ebay you can get one for a good deal.

Dave, to add to what oldschool and gamester81 said. When you are looking to buy a console especially on ebay or Craigslist take into account how many games it comes with because if you are going to buy the console of course you are going to need to buy those as well. If for example I were to choose from a Colecovision console w/out games for 60 dollars or one with 10 games for 75 dollars I will most likely go with the 75 dollar one. Just something to think about.

David Halligan You can get the Flashback edition at Toys R' Us.It's super light and has 60 games built into the hardware. The only trade-off is that you can't use cartridges on it.

I remember Coleco was very underrated back then like the Nintendo Gamecube. But was more capable than the popular Atari 2600.

Unless they started making colico vision commercials basically saying that they're competing against the Xbox one ps4 and wii u everything made for it is considered to be home brew

Well it looks like this version of Donkey Kong and many others they promised were never sold. The makers of this Super Game Module pulled the old hook and switch.
