So, my dad had one of these beauties. It was lipstick red with white interior. He bought it used and mom, dad and I and my older sister went to Pennsylvania to visit family when I was a kid. My uncle John's son Dale, who was a GM mechanic and dad were outside. Dad was in the car revving it and it was sounding choppy. My cousin Dale said "Hey buddy, go fill up a Pepsi bottle with water and bring it out here". I did and Dale had the air filter unit off. He told my dad to rev it to about 3 grand and no kidding , he started pouring the water down the four barrel carb. The engine misfired about twice, black smoke, white smoke and then clear exhaust. Dale told dad "Okay, should run like a champ now". That water went down in with the fuel, created super heated steam, blew the carbon off the pistons and heads which detonated, then all the other residue burned off (black smoke) and then the white smoke was excess oil and then it was running perfectly. That big car could fly!!! We took it out to California when I was another year older. Mom woke up about 2 a.m. and looked over at my dad (We were in Utah out in the middle of nowhere) and he was asleep at the wheel. She looked at the speedometer, he was doing 110. She gently woke him up while gripping the steering wheel perfectly straight. We immediately stopped at the first motel. LOL.

Having driven a 69 X100 I can assure you that the Performance Suspension was a must. It still rode quite well without being harsh, but it was a lot more stable at high speeds than the standard Susp. that rode like a 1940's baby buggy.

Makes me miss my 69 Lincoln Continental Mark III even more. In that guise, there was 365 HP, and a startling 500 lbs. Ft of torque, and that first set of tires it had suffered its wrath! I was 18, and surprised quite a few folks with that car., though at well over 5,000 lbs it wasnt truly competitive. My brother had a 71. He was 19, and we remember the cars fondly.

Sir, the 429 can’t weigh 100 pounds less than the Ford 460. They are the same engine, they are both Ford 385 series engines and the 429 and 460 are exactly the same minus bore/stroke differences and they don’t add up to 100 pounds of difference. I believe you might be thinking of the 428 engine which was a Ford FE engine and they were approximately 75 pounds lighter than the Ford 385 series block. Ford FE stood for Ford Edsel, at least according to all books dedicated to the subject I ever read. However, this year I learned that the FE might have stood for something else. Yet, the 385 in the Ford 385 series engines stood for the amount of stroke that the block had. Fixed Sorry guys it’s been a while since I’ve looked at that specific thing in a long long time, but thank you for all of the kind corrections, the not so kind commenters can go lick glass.

Pinning this because you are 1000% correct that is 100% my miss I should have caught that - 1 cubic inch off really got me. I had a whole section about the big block fords in this video's engine section that I cut out because I didn't feel it was necessary but in that, I touched on the Boss 429 and some other big blocks so that is where the confusion and mix-up came from. Thank you for the correction.

I bought a 429 out of an X100 one time at the junk yard. It was a shame really because the car, while hit in the front, wasn't hurt that much. The guy told me it had been there about 20 years and that was in the mid 1990's. Engine was perfect inside.

Thanks for this video. Right after I learned to drive, my Dad (a Ford worker) bought a ‘69 Marauder X-100. I was ecstatic. It was red on red with the matte rear deck. It would smoke those H70-15 Goodyear bias ply tires forever. That 429 engine was the same one used in the T-Bird of the same era. Seems I remember that the Pontiac Grand Prix that year was also a player in the “personal luxury” genre.

Even with the 'heavy duty' suspension option, the Marauder X100 and Ford XL were smooth, comfortable, and quiet cruisers. The stock suspension was mush, and had a tendency to pitch and buck on freeway overpasses that were arched. I had a '70 Ford XL, which had the 'sport tone' on the hood and along the tops of the doors, along with chrome trim to separate the two colors (try finding any of those trim bits today 😂). I didn't appreciate that car as much as I should have, and I would love to find either a nice X100 or XL today. Happy Trails!

The Marauder was not a High Powered Version of the Crown Vic, it was a High Powered Version of the Mercury Grand Marquis, it has nothing to do with the Ford Brand and Everything to do with the Mercury Brand historically. There was never a large High Power Sports version of the Chrysler New Yorker, Chrysler had the 300 which is what the Marauder was competing against. It also didn't compete against the Toronado or the Rivera, which were smaller personal luxury cars, it competed against the Delta 88 Coupe or Starfire from Oldsmobile or the Buick Invicta or Centurion in Coupe form.

Steve McGarret on Hawaii 5-0 must have had a 4 door Marquis. I just knew it was a Merc.

The marauder was a nice car yep even nicer motor. Think of everything that was new in 1969 though which car and they were a lot of them was your favorite? Everyone would have a different car. The marauder was a good car yes but it was amongst some of the greatest cars America ever put out.

Why did you show a 1971 Mercury for comparison of front end and side views? I would have thought that you would have used a 1969-1970 Marquis. By 1971 the Marauder was no longer around.
