I really remember an interview with a British landing boat driver which moved me. He was taking American troops to Omaha (I can’t remember if he said which wave they were) and as he dropped them off he said he could see them only moving a short way in before all falling down in a line, obviously unable to move further. He said he watched as they were killed were they lay as he had to drive away back to the troopships. What really caught me was that this old man paused for a moment and the last thing he said in there was interview was, “I still see them sometimes, in my dreams”.

My dad returned from the Pacific Theater safe. When he was 93 years old and in the hospital he was captured and tortured by the Japanese. He kept reciting a series of numbers and nothing else when spoken to by staff. They asked my mom the significance of the numbers. My mom told them it was his army serial number. Those guys never talked much about their experiences during the war. Truly tough guys and the greatest generation.

55 landing boats had cameras installed in them, to be activated when the boat grounded and the men disembarked. Some did not work, or the men on-board forgot to turn them on. Only 4 videos were recorded. One was of the North Shore Regiment from New Brunswick. Not all of the beaches were like Omaha. Juno was the 2nd in dead and wounded, but not with the sheer butchery the 1st and 29th Divisions experienced. My grandfather landed in the 3rd wave, as part of the 18th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers

One of the most emotional stories of the D-DAY landings was an account of a royal navy sailor at the helm of a landing craft full of American soldiers, all of them not much older than teen-agers..he got them to the beach and as the ramp fell forward a German machine gun opened up and not one soldier survived to put a foot on french soil.He could hardly speak about having to go back to the troop ship with the bodies of the young men... He just kept saying " those poor boys what a waste".... I'm ex RN and found myself in a war but nothing I experienced can hold a candle to what the WW2 men had to handle...... bless them all

My Grandfather jumped with the Paras on D Day, but he was always stunned by the bravery of the men who stormed the beaches into a hail storm of death. These were young men most who had never ever seen combat before and he had always had the deepest respect for those who hit the beaches. He figured his role jumping directly into the enemy was safer. I remember him saying that when they landed his team under Dickie their officer ditched the helmets and donned their red berets to put the fear of god I to the enemy at their arrival. Despite my own military career and being very close to him, this was the only thing he ever said about the whole war. It was his funeral and meeting Dickie that revealed a whole lot more, turned out he was a very modest man. Funnily enough he got married only days before he jumped to my nan and I still have the photos of him proudly stood beside her in his Para uniform.

One uncle was in the pacific serving in the Navy. One of his brothers was filming things like this ( he was drafted from the seminary prepping for priesthood, never went back). Another brother in army as well went to North Africa, then Italy, then Germany. Anither was told his job was more important to continue. Military told him. My grandfather draftedinto the civilian battalion ( sea bees) spent the war in the Brooklyn navy yards making ships. He had plumbing experience. All survived rhe war but grandpa got cancer in 1974 along with several hundred thousand men that worked building ships. Safety was disgarded over production. They got time down from a year per ship to one per month. The cancer was asbestos specific and most died in early seventies but since they were by then spread out through the country, no one noticed for allmost ten years.

He was a Canadian career Officer who also served two tours in the Middle East (1961, 1967 ) where he commanded the U.N. Teams … He came to Bathurst NB to celebrate Remembrance Day with other heroes. Passed to Heaven in 1997, a lover of Christ and his fellow man, sponsoring Vietnamese Boat People among others. I can personally attest he was a man among men, of the GREATEST GENERATION… forever proud of this strong, moral man and the brave men who fought ( and many died ) with him. 😢
