Let's start with some nitpicking: 1:02 Jetline is not a Schwarzkopf coaster. Anton Schwarzkopf was involved as a consultant, but it was built by Zierer. His company hat already gone bankrupt by that time. ;-) Anyhow, thanks for presenting this unique coaster model. Despite the clickbaity title (it is rare nowadays, but with 5 having been built, there are rarer coasters out there), it is really nice to see someone covering the history of this ride.

I think that’s an incredible coaster, and it probably has way more potential than anyone has ever given it. Specially for the smaller amusement parks. I believe it could be put inside of a building, with some strobe lights and some disco lighting little bit of smoke. This would make an incredible attraction.

I was an operator and mechanic of a Katapult on Morey's pier in Wildwood NJ during the summers of 1985-86. It took so much inspection and maintenance everyday that this ride didn't open until 5pm when the rest of the rides opened at 10am. 110 nylon wheels, each one had to be checked everyday for wear. But it was a fun ride to operate. It had a 16 ton counterweight that would spin and that's what gave it the momentum to go through the loop. Thanks for the memories!

I rode a catapult many years ago in my home town in the Netherlands - could not get enough of it 😁. I remember there was a huge diesel generator next to it to supply it with power. Similar generators were used at other locations of the fair, but those powered quite a lot more than a single attraction. Nice video, it finally explains why that catapult was only present at the fair for two years in a row 😥.

That looks like a fun little coaster! It'd be a great one for kids to find out if they'll like loops or not before trying bigger coasters.
@damegataco
@damegataco 3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a coaster as it uses the tires to go up the loop and uses gravity to go down and finish the track for the most part while the tires work mainly as the brakes and to give it extra speed to go up the loop
@revimfadli4666
@revimfadli4666 2 жыл бұрын
At the very least, it's a powered coaster instead of "glorified Larson Looper"
@crooked-halo
@crooked-halo 2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely not "a coaster." It is powered. A roller coaster coasts. The only un-powered section is at the top of the loop, which is less than a train-length in distance. Katapult is not a roller coaster.
@damegataco
@damegataco 2 жыл бұрын
@@crooked-halo I'm not going to go over the semantics on what makes a coaster and what doesn't because you should already know what it entails if you feel you know enough to make the argument, but I'll just point out the essential difference between something like this and a "powered coaster" that is not considered an actual coaster even though it has a more standard type coaster track.. That difference is that the cars don't have any sort of self propelling mechanisms or engine on them to move itself... Sure the wheels do a lot of work to get the coaster going to the top of the loop and essentially act as the brakes, but in general the majority of the "circuit" utalizes gravitational forces after being brought up to the highest point of the track to complete the run therefore it's a roller coaster.
@crooked-halo
@crooked-halo 2 жыл бұрын
@@damegataco The majority of Katapult's circuit uses the power of the drive tires, not gravitational forces. It's obvious watching the ride, and was stated as such in the video.

From my understanding the blue one you showed at the end that is "technically in operation" is the one that is rumored / supposed to travel again. It is most likely the Goetze/Merkl one and it is currently owned by a Showman Schäfer, Showman Leon Snep did own this one, but it was way back in the mid 00´s and he wanted to travel with it using the name "2 Fast 2 Furious", but from my understanding that never happened. It is unknown where it went after Snep owned it, but it is rumored that it was at a unknown location in the Czech Republic before it went to Swiss Showman Arpagus. The current refurbishment is on hold given the whole Corona situation.

Why do some not regard it as a coaster? My guess would be because it doesn't coast (hence the name). It is true that there are no drive wheels at the apex of the loop, but you may notice that the where the wheels start and stop, the cars are at no point not connected to them. The reason I believe there were no wheels at the top is to keep the trains from getting stuck upside down should there be a problem with the drive system or an electrical fall off. This kind of taxes what's left of my memory, but I do seem to remember reading about it from a book on unique coaster from about 1986. The title escapes me.

I guess that is just due to the overall ride's construction. The iconic loops hace this "inverted U" shape support that make them look more circular, while they aren't. But they certainly pack a punch and they stood the test of time much better than some other late 70s/early 80s looping coasters.

We possibly _could_ consider this the first full circuit swing launch coaster since it did utilize three launches, with the second one backwards. That would also mean we'd have a combination of this and the Maurer SkyLoop to thank for the Sky Rocket II (and the other variants from other companies).

They said they were "ring of fire" aka larson superloops. I also happened to know the one area and they would never want the noise from the superloop.

I say it's a microcoaster, basically a super small rollercoaster. It's definitely interesting to look at and I wonder if someone will try to recreate it. Looks like something I'd build in rollercoaster tycoon 2, but not quite exactly like this since I'd need a station to function in that game.

It was for me a great experience to ride a track with a looping during the days that visiting a theme park was not yet that common as it is today (In the eighties). It was several years on the Dutch funfairs and the ride was smooth and had some variations even with this simple layout. For a next video I would like a review of the Zierer "Flitzer" (also known as "Racing" in Danish park 'Bakken' There was also one on the Dutch funfairs in the 70's and 80's

If an inability to run a rollercoaster during a power shortage was something that disqualified a ride from being a true rollercoaster, then I guess we can get rid of almost ALL rollercoasters. If the use of drive tires to give the train speed disqualifies it from being called a roller coaster, then we have lots and lots of rides that no longer can be called roller coasters.

@@kofiLjunggren I don't know to which extent he was involved, but he sure was, and it certainly has a "schwarzkopesque" vibe to it. But the track style is a little different (if you look closely, the top of spine of the track goes above the running rails, while on classic Schwarzkopf track it is below), which is because I think Intamin bought the rights to the original track. And I think he added quite a lot of his experience, as by that time, Zierer normally only built their small Tivoli Coasters. But regardless of how much Schwarzkopf is in that ride, Jetline rocks, and the setting close to the water n a really awesome park makes it even better. :-) Another one of those Zierer/Schwarzkopf coasters would be Lisebergbanan at Liseberg, Göteborg, Sweden.
