Since I could not find the original film video for this beautiful movie ghazal composed by Madan Mohan and sung by Lata Mangeshkar, I thought of creating a video by combining the captivating music with available dance videos. Fortunately, I came across some wonderful dance clips of Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, Rita Hayworth, Cyd Charisse as well as Lisa Miles and Tim Balfour. Although the words of this song express sadness while some of the dance scenes exhibit a lighter mood, I felt that the beauty of the graceful and fluid movements of the dancers that the eyes perceive complements the beauty of the words and the sounds that the ears capture.

Interpretation (this is not a literal translation; I have taken some liberty for the sake of rhyming):
Oh, these demands and rituals of love, how do I manage?
How do I keep safe from the fires that everywhere rage?
People erect walls in the path of the lover's heart
Could someone tell me how to take them apart?
My heart is filled with thousands of songs soaked in distress
But with my broken heart strings, how do I express?
With the burden of sorrows, I am able to cope
When living itself is a burden, is there hope?

Dear Mr Baig - After reading your comment on Bemused321, i cannot but comment on your own comment. The words that you have written are so beautiful, so lyrical, comparing bemused321's work with the likes of "Bimalda" or "Gulzaarji", speaks volumes of the Compassionate Soul that you yourself have. And then you have mentioned antaras from this Immortal song by M'Mohanji and picked up the nuances that bemused321 created. Hats off to you Sir for your comment. What bemused321 has done - is nothing less than "Magical". The maker of this clip is definitely a lovely person with a heart of music and gold. Best wishes to both you people. I agree with all the things u have mentioned Mr Baig. In fact it seems that this song and this piece so brilliantly created by *bemused* were actually made for each other. There is a perfect match at the beginning of most stanzas, a lift at so many uthaye, the time she sits open legged on the bench to describe the words of the last stanza. And yes the almost perfect end to match the sitar jhala.. I have never loved this song better.

I am a music lover and have felt that this musical composition by Madan Mohan jee directly touches the cord strings of one's heart. In any situation, this rendition offers solace and release from stress and tension. Great voice of Lata Deedi need not be mentioned. Beyond flaw. Music is the best nourishment for heart and soul

The lyric of this fabulous song was composed by the great poet Naqsh Lyallpuri (who was a friend of mine who passed away in 2017 at the age 88) and it was Madan Mohan who tuned it to a melody based on the Hindustani classical raga Madhuvanti. The singer Lata Mangeshgar ji has listed it as her most favourite song.

By then he had morphed into a master lyricist and we used to meet more often at the suburb called Mulund where both of us used to live ...

A masterpiece ghazal ! The magical voice of Lata Mangaishkar made this song more and more impressive! Wah wah maza aagaya! Madan Mohan did excellent job! My favourite song. I think the sitar intro is most underrated thing in this song but in reality the intro builds the momentum of song and it was played by the maestro Ustad Raees Jee and also he composed half of the tune but madam Mohan jee also done justice in composing this song and he was also a maestro and the next great thing was the lyrics by Naqsh Jee and on top of that the voice of Lata jee this song is not less than a magic

Even if you knew what you wanted to show with that beautiful song, it'd be very hard to conjure up such stunningly beautiful composition, so well synchronized, as if it was made just for this song. It just so happened that one fine morning when I woke up, this song just popped up in my head. I didn't even know the song, just first line. And for rest of the day, I was just going crazy to find the song. Never saw the movie, didn't know anything about it. I must've heard it sometime in my life. I was going so crazy, I had to have the song. Internet is such a great resource, I found the song with this composition. For a while I thought, this was the actual dance sequence. And for next couple of months, everyday, again and again I was listening to this song. And then I found the actual movie clip. I watched it and I said, "Naaah...!!! The one you created was better." And if I didn't misunderstand,, yours is a combination of multiple dance clips! Which makes it even more amazing !! This is awesome !! Thanx !!

The masterpiece from the three stalwarts, Madan Mohan, Naqsh Lyallpuri and Lata Mangeshkar, wl have you rooted to the lyrics, music by the maestro and to top it all the rendition by Lataji wl mesmerize you behind the sky and more. The more you listen to this song the more it touches ur raw chord to ripen. At any given time I, listen to this song 4 / 5 times in a row yet I do not feel bored , unlike today's numbers u can barely listen to it once, it doesn't occur that u ve to again rewind. This song haunts ur inner realms and gives u a nice feel when u listen with rapt attention. Try it out.

Was this dance not done on this song? No, no, it is impossible! Me and my friend saw the dance, formed the opinion that somebody had picturized these dances on the music of this song only, with a super fine aesthetic sense of beauty. When I saw that a western dance is being presented for the Hindustani song, wondered how it would fit. As I watched it looked as if the song and tune are made for the dance and vice versa. Even the mood and meaning seem well matched and mutually enhancing the total effect. Really grand. I have read the long scholarly comment by Mirza Baig and I totally agree with him although I do not have the mastery of all the arts involved. Long live the creativity and the new evolutions of classical originals.

This was familiar and yet one wasn't conscious, not quite, of this song - and seeing the year of the film, it's obvious why. That was the year of struggling to stay on alive despite starvation and routine beatings that were accelerated to weekly or more, with the education and with holding up one's strength, one's peace, determination, and not just give up! Then one was thrown out after a particularly vicious assault when one was repeatedly thrown, head first, at walls and doors, before it got worse. This beautiful song was lost somewhere between the starving, the assaults, and the consciousness narrowed to staying alive, like when one is almost fainting and the music one still hears is lost in detail.
