I scalped the Raspberry Pi CM4 and reached 2.5GHz
Of course, it's not safe; you definitely lose your warranty and can damage the device.
I used Compute Blade RC2 of my own design. CM4 Power 5.1V up to ~4.5A
It was necessary to keep the temperature no higher than ~6 degrees Celsius. Compressed air was used for cooling.

@@detaart and once you cut that adhesive, there is only thermal paste, otherwise don't you think it would've taken a lot more effort? If the actual die was glued then sure it could break a solder joint, but there's no way the solder paste alone would do that. Also it looks like the solder paste is fluid cause you can see cavitation on the die/IHS

@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 6 ай бұрын
It’s not that painful, he’s prolly gonna put Liquid Metal on the cpu once he cleans off all the old thermal paste. Then you just put a few dabs of RTV sealant on the IHS after cleaning off the old sealant and set the IHS cover back in place and let it cure. Now you got a super cool cpu so you can overclock it and get way better performance with out the cou thermal throttling. I did this to a brand new $1,200 Intel CPU a few years back and it did wonders, you just gotta be careful when prying/cutting off the factory glued IHS cover. (Overclocking isn’t for everyone tho) but I’ll eventually do this with my new pi 4 that I just bought haha

@@the.n00bish Sure, but this has no mounting provisions, so you would risk cracking the die pretty easily. Back in the day, the socket clips or holes in the board kept everything centered, and even then it was possible to crack the die.

Maybe the electronics engineers that designed the chip and the mechanical engineers that analysed the heat transfer characteristics wanted it the way it was manufactured for reasons best known to them? Just saying...
@RonLaws
@RonLaws Жыл бұрын
I want to agree, but i can't on one simple factor, the chip before it didn't have a metal plate and was fully packaged in plastic/resin, but this model and following ones do and they are designed to run without a cooler, however will perform better with one. it's mostly to protect the die because the pi is first and foremost a development/educational tool and they want it to be somewhat robust to physical wear and tear, so capping it with a thermally conductive lid allows for that while still being a good heat transfer medium. That said, the difference with direct to die cooling on the pi is negligible and honestly not worth the effort under normal circumstances honestly.
@HaloHunter2552

Stuff like this isn't always because it's best thermally, but it is simple, working, robust, and cheap. Good enough for 99% of use cases.

I'm actually going to say no, the chip doesn't produce nearly enough heat output to even remotely warrant it. it's only a 3-5W chip lol. Yes un-cooled it will throttle, but even with the lid on, a basic active cooler is more than enough to keep it under the limit and comfortably below 50C
@RonLaws
@RonLaws Жыл бұрын
@@sonacphotos but the chip on the Pi has a TDP of 3-5W idle and under load, such a small amount of heat output can be dissipated with the minimal amount of effort, i don't think it makes any sense for the Pi at all. but i'd love to see some actual data that proves me wrong.

@@RonLawsremember, they're also normally inside a housing, and potentially sitting around other, maybe warmish, electronics. And HOPEFULLY they at least have a fan on the housing. But yeah, most common use, in most situations, will prob do just fine..... unless intended to be used in hot environs.... outside or buildings without AC in summer. Just other considerations. 👍

thermal paste isn't a very good thermal mass. it's a thermal contact material, meant only to fill imperfections on a given die/heatspreader/cold plate surface. Silicon paste is actually a pretty good insulator, if you add too much you'll seal the heat into the die.

That's not the CPU, that's the heat dissipator for the CPU since raspberry Pi's don't have connections on their boards for radiators or CPU fan connections. Some people would just get a regular computer fan and connect it through the pins, but I'm pretty sure this dude was just making hardware gore since delidding a CPU is atrocious for it even when you know what you're doing.
