Beautiful explanation, I can see a lot of potential with something like this. You are correct though, the latency period experienced when you wait for a response from the cloud would be much too long for real-time control of a robot or other device. But I think it would be just perfect for IoT projects, especially if it can be triggered using the "OK Google" command when switching lights or driving servos. As always an excellent video!

What I'd like to see is the stand alone voice recognition we had back in the 90's. If we could do it then, there is no excuse for not being able to do it now with computers far in excess of that level of processing power. If you'd like to know what I mean, watch LGR's review of home automation here; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptNjZq5zl7rMaYE.html No "cloud", just the system listening to your voice and interpreting commands. Voice recognition, done right, is very accurate and resource efficient.

Mr. Barnatt, I have a little tip! You can use the TAB key to finish commands in Linux so that you do not have to type the whole name of things like file names. Also, if you use 'ls' instead of 'dir' you will get a colorized directory listing, which will display executables in green. This is very practical, because you will see for instance if a sh script has already been chmodded or not. I really enjoy your videos. I have been watching many dozens of them in the past week and I will continue to do so until I have seen them all. Please make a tip jar on Patreon so people can reduce the time you need to do work work!

You probably get this question from time to time: I love your videos and note that you can capture pretty much any kind of video output. Thanks for this. I use a standalone HDMI recorder. This used to be an Atomos Ninja 2, though is usually now a BlackMagic Design Video Assist 4K. I also have to use an HDMI splitter with many machines (if not the Pi) as many outputs have DCP. And the splitter is necessary sometimes to sync a computer to a monitor or TV at the resolution I want, after which I add in the recorder on the second output. I have been thinking of making a video about this -- so maybe I should! :)

It's exactly the same behavior like Alexa or Jarvis, so not such a big thing, how long voice recognition is not processed locally and always need internet access and cloud connection, I really don't consider this a big step , because all the processing is make in cloud not locally, so I don't see it like a full independent system :((

Thanks for this. I too am eager to see where this stuff heads. I think (hope) the issue with the video relates to the time zone change in the UK last night frmo BST to GMT. I tried several times this morning to set it to release at my usual 2:00pm (in the UK), but the system kept changing it back to 3:00pm, and in the end I released it manually. But maybe the messing around caused issues. Anyway, at least your sub flagged it up, and it does now seem to be showing on the channel.

Thx for your videos! We have successfully used the Google Assistant API on our voice kit. We have also successfully used the Google Speech API to control the GPIO pins. Question One: Do you know the level of difficulty in doing both at once. For example, I want to be able to both ask Google Assistant what is the square root of 79 and also ask Google Speech API to process “Turn on red LED”. I want to do both these things without having to stop one program and run another. Question Two: Can one use the Google Assistant on the AIY to control off the shelf devices like light bulbs that one can control with the commercial product called Google Home?
@ExplainingComputers
@ExplainingComputers 6 жыл бұрын
I've not tried to use both programs at once. In theory, you can achieve with the AIY kit the kind of control available with a "normal" Google Home device -- but again, I have not tried. Yet! :)

You must be really ignorant. If you ever checked Google's privacy report you'd know Google's Home and Assistant devices aren't sending your every word to servers. They only send a few-second-long audio clip, the microphone is disabled and it will wait for you to say the wake word. Get a life and do your research before writing something stupid like this.

Google Assistant is, I think, available in German. It is possible to use your own microphone and speaker, though I have not tried this setup and you would need somewhat different code. You cannot change the trigger phrase for Google Assistant -- in English it is either "Okay Google" or "Hey Google" (both work -- you do not have to switch).

Hi Mister Barnett. I enjoyed the video I would like to clarify two points, if I were to build a Pi voice control to my home would I have to pay any amount of money to use this service either now or in the future. Second, if I were to listen to some of my more paranoid friends, could I incorporate a radio-controlled microphone with a wireless PTT would I be able to "key-it-up" in another room lets say, and have the unit respond? Thanks.
@ExplainingComputers
@ExplainingComputers 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. You do need to set up a billing account to use voice commands linked to GPIO/etc, though not to use Google Assistant, which could potentially be used for home automation. After the free trial, you would have to pay Google for the voice service. Potentially you could use a wireless microphone, though not with the voice hat (and I think that Google relies on the stereo microphones). So overall you would be better using several Google Home devices -- perhaps the new mini ones --- across different rooms. Probably cheaper, and you would have full access to home automation devices.

It would be a better practice to put the strings for the voice commands into an external file, and load it at the start. That's much more flexible, which is why it's a professional technique, (as Chris probably knows). The really important principle of computing is abstraction, recognising cases which obey the same rules, hence can be coded once. Too much of the current enthusiasm for "coding" seems to be about writing lists of fixed strings, which make programs inherently brittle.
@ExplainingComputers

You are of course right for professional coding. But this is not what the code supplied by Google for the AIY does, and adds complexity when teaching coding! :)

I'll be honest, the non-Assistant voice doesn't sound much better than what the BBC Model B could do with a speech ROM in the 80s. You can download free and open source software such as espeak for linux/bsd that can achieve similar quality for voice feedback. I've not tested speech recognition software, but I won't be jumping on the voice control bandwagon until there's a decent open source system that doesn't require cloud access and can work completely offline. The concept is neat, but the forced integration with the systems of companies like Google or Amazon is not.

With relay switches you could easily turn a lamp off and on.

I originally wanted to put a pi sensor on my raspberry pi but this google voice hat takes up all the raspberries pins. Any ideas? Please help thanks

You could have to break out the required pins manually.

ExplainingComputers what do you mean by that? The google hat takes up all the raspberry pins... I don’t have any pins to put the pir sensor on

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant that you you would need to plug jumper wires onto the GPIO pins, taking those needed for the AIY HAT to the HAT, and other wires to your sensor. I'm sure that once I saw a multi-HAT stacker/adaptor.

ExplainingComputers oh didn’t know you can do that! Nice... so you mean the same pin of raspberry to the same pin on the google voice hat? I thought I would have to use a bread board. Is there any drawing or anything that is out there for me to see what you mean? Also, that button on the google voice. Can I wire that to a led lights instead? I believe they are 5v

Just as you say, connect pin 1 on Pi to pin 1 on the HAT, etc, using jumper wires that are male to female. Not all pins are used, so free GPIO could then be used for other purposes. The light in the button is indeed just an LED.
