Announcing the Most Awesome Raspberry Pi Lessons of All Times! This time we RUMBLE!
In this class series, we will be using the most excellent Sunfounder Ultimate Raspberry Pi kit, available here: (Affiliate Link)
amzn.to/3tSk9Mo
or for our UK friends, amzn.to/3I5d401
In this lesson I will show how to use PIR sensor with the Raspberry Pi. I show step-by-step how to connect the sensor and then how to code it. This sensor allows security devices, by detecting motion of warm objects (people). This will be an important component in future lessons.
If you want to grab those cool little straight jumper wires I am using to keep my breadboard builds neat and clean you can snag a box of them here:
amzn.to/36NyfHq
If you guys are interested in the oscilloscope I am using, you can pick one up here (affiliate link):
amzn.to/3v13Mhl
You guys get your hardware ordered so you can follow along at home!
You will also need a Raspberry Pi. I suggest the Raspberry Pi 4. If you do not already have one, this is the most suitable gear I could find:
amzn.to/3pBMfKm
The Raspberry Pi's are sort of pricy right now, so you can look on ebay or elsewhere to see if there are any deals. You will need a SD card. If you do not already have one, this is a good one:
amzn.to/3KcXTn2
I like using a wireless keyboard and mouse to have fewer wires. You can certainly use your USB keyboard and mouse, but if you want a nice wireless one, this one works on the pi. We demonstrate this by using a button switch to control a LED.
amzn.to/36Rv9Sk
You guys can help me out over at Patreon, and that will help me keep my gear updated, and help me keep this quality content coming:

It was a productive summer for my son learning Arduino & Python. I was amazed how the Toptechboy lessons transformed my son from a complete newbie to one who can do powerful things with microcontrollers. He will be in Grade 11 on next week's school opening here in the Philippines. I'm on the Fusion 360 side of Toptechboy , intending to make a slope enclosure for the LCD & keypads of his Elegoo & Sunfounder kits. Hopefully this will encourage him to take the Fusion 360 lessons too. Thank you .

This will be fun to pick up and play. I left electronics back in Y2K and my last position was as a project engineer with Honeywell on the DT-72x motion sensor using PIR and K-band doppler. Using ir lenses and programing we could protect a space from intrusion while ignoring pets or small animals. When ASICs came along it was time for a change of careers but for play this is great!!!

Well I Googled ASICs and all that came up was shoe links. Me thinks you were referring to something else. Info please?

Hi Paul & Guys I've just started looking at the gpiozero library. I had, stupidly, thought that it was just used with a Pi Zero but it can be used with the other Pi's too. When you install it, it also gives you a command 'pinout' that you can use in Terminal which displays lots of useful stuff for the Pi model that you are using. Here are some very belated, due to Covid, solutions to Paul's lessons: Lesson 15 (potentiometer + LED) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hM-Gasemqa_MaI0.html Lesson 17 (3 potentiometers + RGB LED) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8l2Y6iZmLaqeok.html Lesson 18 (joystick using gpiozero) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNqPZ8aD2q2ckY0.html Lesson 18 Pico version (joystick) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7t5p713rbmxgmw.html Lesson 19 (servo/potentiometer ) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fcmTirGY1dPcoH0.html Lessons 21 & 22 (Using the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ldaKlZqHnrvSgKs.html Lessons 21 & 22 (Pico) (Using the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdlmnM6TsMWvpmg.html

Putting my creativity cap on. I saw you have a launch date for your new tutorial series with the raspberry pi pico w. I have my kit and I'm super excited to get started with that one. I am working on 3 of your series right now. I have paused the other ones while I focus on this one. I'll be joining you next week for the pico w lessons.

Thanks for the video! Do you know what kind of motion sensor I need that doesn't detect heat, just motion?

Hi paul, i want to program my pico to operate a relay for 0.5 of a second via a microwave sensor to start my action camera recording when motion detected and also the same when the sensor times out when motion is not detected to operate the relay again to stop recording. My camera has motion detection but will not activate for birds only humans so opting for the microwave sensor rather than pir. I can bring 2 wires from the switch of the camera to a relay. Can any of your videos help with the programming? Thankyou.

I’m keep getting some 0s and some 1s on repeat even if there’s no motion. I tried putting it in a dark box but it still detects motion. Edit: After changing delay it kinda works better now.
