Emboldened by the success of his Raspberry PIrate radio, Matt indulges in some more radio hacking by building a specialized QFH antenna and a briefcase form-factor satellite receiver in an attempt to intercept "faxes" from OUTER SPAACEEE!!! Connect with Matt on the element14 community: bit.ly/2RiSXC5
Project TIROS is a self-contained, Raspberry Pi-based satellite signal reception system designed to automatically download images and data from NOAA's POES spacecraft as they pass overhead and display the data on an integrated LCD panel. In this video, Matt will walk through how to set up an RTL-SDR module with a Raspberry Pi for automated satellite downloads as well as how to design and build a quadrifilar helical antenna for polar-orbiting signal reception.
Engage with the element14 Presents team on the element14 Community - suggest builds, find project files and behind the scenes video: bit.ly/2MFMG0v

Very cool topic. I never dreamed of snagging satellite images out of the air. For 20 minutes, it looked like 20 hours - great effort.

@17:36: In 1980 I helped build a receiver for the TIROS-N weather satellite. Ah, good times. It was used for the official weather forecasting in India by the India Meteorological Department. Thanks for the memories. It was one of the most fun projects I've worked on. We used a gimbal mounted satellite dish to capture the signal in those days. It ran on a Data General Nova computer.

Nice build in a case. You can also either swap the power supply for an all DC solution that for other listening or maybe transmitting applications will lower the noise. Maybe you can make a battery power supply from recycled re-purposed Lithium Ion cells or I like the Li-Ion INR since seem safer if not using LiFePo4. Then maybe noisy buck converters to rectify if not a quieter though hotter less efficient though quieter RFI/EMI linear solution. Awesome potential here and a great start for way more possibilities with the same system and/or different component upgrades!

Any guess on the power draw? I'd think the screen is the biggest power draw. If you swapped the screen with one made to be battery powered, you could likely make the whole kit battery powered without too much trouble. Fun project. Thanks for sharing it with us.

for future reference xbox 360 (all variations) make great project power supplies, 12v+, 5v+, you can get out of them easy and they have a nice enclosure, they are also plentiful in the wild with so many dead 360's it means an abundance of them, if you know how to build a negative voltage circuit a 360 supply makes a great c64/128 power supply, as the original one is hard to find.

Yes I've built satellite receivers for both POES (NOAA 15,18 & 19) and GOES-16 weather satellites. However, I found using a raspberry pi can be problematic. The Pi gets overheated even with a fan and would reboot because of power drops even using an PC power supply. When it is running it kept dropping packets and I would lose hours of images from the GOES-16 Satellite. For my GOES system I dumped the Pi and went with a full PC running Ubuntu and all my problems with overheating, power loss and dropped packets went away.

if you don't want to use a raspberry pi or make a complicated antenna you can use the SDR on any computer better than a potato As for the antenna a V dipole with 120 deg spacing that faces south. the opening of the V facing south, not the point of it. will work just fine as long as there isn't a ton of other radio interference but at 131-137mhz end of the spectrum there shouldn't be that much unless you live near a airport. one benefit of using a pc is you can get software that tracks the NOAA sats and can automatically tune your SDR to compensate for Doppler shift as well as decode the images live and save them them as well as add enhancements like false colour, heat maps, precipitation estimation ect. www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-tutorial-receiving-noaa-weather-satellite-images/ www.rtl-sdr.com/simple-noaameteor-weather-satellite-antenna-137-mhz-v-dipole/

is the doppler here really important ? at 137 Mhz band the shift is about 200-400Hz
@sneffels
@sneffels 5 жыл бұрын
@@qqqqqq6686 It's not too important for the SDR since the NOAA sat signal is only 36Khz wide. and SDRs can sample a much wider signal you can also manually track the doppler or get programs to do it for you. The first few times I just set my SDRs bandwidth to encompass the whole doppler shift range and my images turned out fine, but now I have my tracking software send the doppler shifted signal to my SDR software it was quite simple to set up and automates the collection of images. Personaly I use WxTrack for tracking SDR# for my SDR and WxToImg for decoding and it all can run automatically. Just get the software up and running and let it do its thing, oh I also use a plugin for SDR# that can read the data from the tracking software to get the doppler shifted signal
