So anybody who has used a Raspberry Pi knows that it lacks a power button. There are some reasons as to why it doesn't have one, but for many who want to use the Pi for entertainment, like Kodi or Retropie, see it as a big inconvenience. Today we are going to go over the possible reasons the Pi doesn't have a Power Button and also come up with some solutions that don't involve programing, as I know most people don't even want to attempt that.

To those of you who are waiting for my video covering overclocking on the device, the script is mostly done. I just need to cover my opinion of the emulation we will be covering and add some extra bits on the N64. Then I will start recording everything I need for it. I promise it won't take 6 months for this next one.
Forgot to put the music I used in the credits
Megaman Starforce 2 (DS)
Megaman Battle Network 2 & 3 (GBA)
Zelda Minish Cap (GBA)
DBZ Legacy of Goku 2 (GBA)
Notes:
TuyaSmart is the brand name for the solution I currently use. There are multiple versions of the device and I figured I would tell you the one I was using.
I use Amazon as my primary source of online shopping so I only use picture from there. Sometimes Amazon ads can run on here so I wanted to put that out there for transparency sake.

Thank you so much for uploading these Raspberry Pi videos as they have made me interested in emulating games on a device with a OS built specificity for emulation instead of a computer.

Until I watched this video I was thinking my SD card was corrupted. My PI4 would still led up Solid RED even after it is turn off and had to manually remove the adapter out of the socket to get the PI off completely. Thanks Man you saved my day. I will go with the extension with the switch so that once I shut down the PI4, I will OFF the extension power to get the RED light go off completely.

This seems like a smart decision! And also, you can use an app called HomeBridge that you have to code the Pi to make available for Siri or such. The thing is that I don’t know if doing that will affect the Pi; since it would need to be turned on, and you’ll probably run into a problem doing so. I’m still new to do, so idk

You make a valid case in the earlier part of the video that it is not a good idea to just unplug these units - file corruption, unsaved data, etc... But then you go pretty hard into the idea of using remote/wifi/smart plugs that literally do exactly that - just cut power to the RPi. This is no different than just unplugging it and exposing it to the potential damage that can result from doing that. A switch on the RPi that is monitored by code that can then initiate a software shutdown in combination with an easy way to cut its power is the safest method. So, basically you would push a button on the RPi to have it begin a proper software shutdown - then, once the activity indicator stops flashing (showing that the software shutdown is done), then kill the power to the RPi - whether by a switch in the power line, switched power strip, smart outlet - unplugging it - or whatever. As to how you do this with these emulator software packages I don't know... Haven't used them - but for programming projects - not hard to do.

The thing is, you have to unplug these units no mater what. Even if you shutdown the system properly it will not turn on again until the power is unplugged, then plugged back in. I'm sure I made it clear in the video that you always have to shutdown the system properly before you kill the power with any method, or else it could cause corruption. I didn't suggest a button that would shutdown the pi properly here because I assume for my channel people are watching this for the RetroPie, and a lot of people don't want to deal with figuring out programing. Which is why I recommend these devices.

great video ! is there a difference between using this smart plug and turning off the power switch on the surge protector? that's after i shut it down from ES of course. I've noticed most of the time after I shut it down from the surge protector power switch, when i go to turn it back on the Pi doesnt boot, so i'll need to unplug the Pi power then plug it back in and it will run. Would that same thing happen with the smart switch?

This is a subject I am fighting with at the moment, I don't want to have to shut it down with a script every time so a button for me is perfect, except for one problem, for some reason I just haven't been able to run the script that installs the button function successfully it always fails, thats with a 3b as well, on my pi4's I have one in a case with a button and couldn't get that to work due to the same issue not being able to get the install script to work and the other pi4 is in a case that takes a small screen, well guess what, the script to run that installs this screen function fails all the time so I am tired and a little sick of it, this has been going on for months and haven't found the solution and the people I have asked have not been able to help. Next I will tackle groups or forums that have the know it alls that feel it is fun or necessary to belittle newbies and just hope that I find the right person that can help me get passed this drama.

After checking Github I found stuff for the PC-88 and PC-FX, but nothing for the 98. Even those other two don't seem to work too well on retropie right now so even if there was one I'm sure it would be a mess.

So if you buy a micro USB power supply/wall charger for the Pi3 that comes with an on/off switch It's ok to use as long as you shut the pi3 off from the software first? And I assume you can shut the Pi3 off from a burnt retro game image?

So you shouldn't unplug it as a way of turning it off? Correct?
@mikeJRthe2nd
@mikeJRthe2nd 6 жыл бұрын
Unless you shut it down from the Retropie menu first (or any of the other Pi OS), then yes, don't just unplug it to turn the Pi off. The only time that should ever happen is when the Pi crashes and it won't let you turn it off manually first.

I thought I said that for any button connected to the pi itself you will have to code it to have it shut down properly. And any makeshift button using the Pi's power supply will always need to be shut down properly too. If not well... there you go lol

It’s a shame you can’t just press a power button on the Pi to turn it on, and just press it again to turn it off again. I’d like to put a Pi together for my 7 y/o nephew, but the process of pressing start and then scrolling down to the shut down section, and then picking the correct shutdown option, might be too much for him to remember.

My guess is no BIOS, and ACPI is a nightmare. Which pushes an 'off' into your booted OS whatever that is. The SOC firmware (whatever this blob is), I think just gets you to the point of booting from an SD Card.
