Setting up a Synchronet BBS ( ANSI graphics ) on a Raspberry Pi 2, hosted on the I2P anonymous network. It's a long walkthough, but I think I covered all the bases
Use the tarball method on the Wiki, not Git to install/update (if you want to edit the C++ source code before compiling) For this video I was basically following the tarball technique, but used git clone (not recommended) to grab the source code instead of wget & tar uncompress wiki.synchro.net/install:nix

Would like to say that I enjoyed the video and also showing "alternative" ways to install the BBS. I'm not so much interested in the I2P install but, rather enjoyed the look into how to customize the source code AND what is involved to tweak the look and feel. The Synchro documentation is detailed but, I found myself getting confused on a number of occasions mostly, because what I was seeing wasn't what was being documented.

Neat concept. And decent instructions on minimizing a Synchronet installation to just the bare essentials of a "traditional" BBS (sans dial-up support) - though a lot of the changes demonstrated were redundant or unnecessary. However, I mainly wanted to point out: DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS VIDEO or you wont' be able to update from Git without corrupting or losing your configuration settings and customizations. Use the "install/GNUmakefile" method as described on wiki.synchro.net to perform a proper installation that won't be corrupted when you want to perform an update from Git. There are a lot of things demonstrated in this video that are not exactly optimal/correct, but the installation method is the most egregious one.

@@gusgorman3416 The Git install method is preferred. If you want to erase the Copyright/Version notice, a simple clear-screen code/sequence at the beginning of the answer.* display file would achieve that.

This is a good tutorial, help to get things working right on Pi. But If your not playing games os sharing files. What are you doing with the bbs, just a private chat community?

Should you use SSH for these I2P BBSes, or does I2P provide it's own end-to-end encryption that makes anything but Telnet unnecessary?

I2P is already encrypted and it's anonymous

You could just print the ANSI codes for gotoxy instead.

I knew that BBS's made somewhat more sense on i2p

Unfortunately I don't think the network will ever get popular. I think most peer 2 peer networks will never be mainstream, including blockchains (I think I read 60% of ethereum nodes are on AWS)
