Raspicast: The Raspberry Pi alternative to Chromecast

In this video we'll take a tiny Raspberry Pi Zero W (though the process should also work on both the Raspberry Pi 3 and 4) and set it up from scratch to act as a receiver that will enable us to cast images, music and videos from an Android device - or the Pi itself - to a television.
Steps covered will include:
* Installing Raspberry Pi OS Lite.
* Configuring the Pi to join a wireless network (without having to attach a monitor, keyboard and mouse).
* Determining the Raspberry Pi's IP address using a handy Android app called Fing.
* Remotely accessing the Pi on a home network.
* Installing the OMX image viewer from its Github repository.
* Installing the OMXPlayer.
* Transferring to, and storing media on, the Pi (with the help of Filezilla).
* Setting up the Raspicast Android app.
* Safely shutting down the Pi with the SSH Button Android app.
By the end of the video, not only will you be casting content from Android (and/or the Pi) to your TV, but you should also be becoming familiar with some of the techniques that will help when setting up other projects involving a (headless) Raspberry Pi.

Hello! Thank you so much for this great video! I finally started tinkering with the raspberry pi2 model B that I was gifted six years ago. :-) I used several videos and articles to piece together a working version as there are file dependencies that have moved it seems, but yours is the most straight-forward and organized. It also provided me with a good refresher on how to perform remote connections and transfer files which came in handy as I was not able to get git installed and manually copied over the omxiv files instead. Thank you again for taking the time to share your knowledge!

Great video mate! First i thought it was just yet another video of some guy explaining how to setup Raspicast like all others on YT and the internet. And i was considering what script / method i was going to use to be able to cast my movies / series to the Raspberry pi aswell as controlling the sleep timer command to an satisfying extent, and then you brought up the SSH button app, that was great and will work wonders on this, im very positive it will atleast. But mate.. dont pause the screen for too long at 33:14 , guy will stare into your soul ! o.o

Thanks for this, Most impressive tutorial you must be an educator :) Just starting with the Pi and found you on KZfaq so will be looking at the rest of you content. if you take requests I would be interested in the most suitable OS for the Pi that providers an everyday OS for Silver Surfers to do the Office, Amazon, KZfaq etc stuff. Most other Pi content providers seem to focus on games or look and feel over functionability.

21:20 I have done everything up to here, I have problems installing omxplayer and I have read that they are already replacing it with vlc, tell me what can I do?

when i try to install { sudo apt install libjpeg8-dev libpng12-dev ] it fails, out of date or may have been replaced

It worked well for casting videos and images but not working to cast KZfaq videos

Should I use Raspbian lite? I've just try it on full Raspbian version and it didn't cast anything

I just tried adding it to a Raspberry Pi 4 running the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS earlier this evening and it worked fine. I'd still recommend running it on top of the Lite version, unless you have need of a desktop, but there don't appear to be any issues using it with the full fat OS. Have you checked the IP address of your Pi, and double-checked the password you entered into the Raspicast app? Also is SSH turned on? Failing this, you could try going through the steps again. Hope that helps.

omxplayer wil not install either its obsolete
