Rebuilt this rad old 1993 GT Ricochet into my new ratty commuter. With a front rack, rigid fork, simple 1x7, bmx bars and the rusty/ratty frame that actually cleaned up surprisingly well! Super happy with how it all turned out, especially the front rack, rides super nice too :) Let me know what you guys think!
Costs:
Total cost est. 264nzd (160usd) (slightly higher than the 200 I thought as I forgot the tyres 😅)
- GT Ricochet $30
- Fork $15
- Bars & Stem $30
- Basket/Crate $8
From the parts bin:
- Chainring $10ish
- Avid Brakes $20ish
- Pedals $20
- Grips $10
- Top Cap $1?
- Skewers $10
- Chain & Cassette $20
- Front Rack $20

This has turned out to be some kind of comfort video / background noise for me while I work on my own clunkers. I just picked up a ‘92 GT Tequesta in black with white splatter paint. It’s currently all taken apart and I’m spot painting the scratched decals with model paint. Thanks for the inspiration and for the great video 🚲

Just done a similar GT, but with solid forks and converted from canti to v brakes as canti caliper plastics holding spring had broken. Just ran an brake outer all the way from lever to rear v brake, clipped to underside of top tube. Works well and also protected from weather. 1" steerer though, so used quill adaptor and fitted a top load bmx stem and low bmx bars, so much better than the original stretched out position that were common on these era atbs.

Nice! Totally agree about the stem swap. Might have to change to a full housing and modify a guide for the rear :)

Right after watching this I went to Goodwill and snagged a $20US BMX and harvested the bars. Put them on my GT Backwoods and dropped-in a $25US shifter cable kit and replaced the break cabling with spares from my "stuff"... bike is like a new ride! The BMX bars really make this bike awesome! Going to spring for a new set of tires. Clicking the Subscribe button right now!

Follow-up... That BMX "Spinner" got a full service. Cleaned and lubed everything that moves. Frame is in remarkable condition for a "yard bike". Has a beater handlebar, far to small on it right now but until I find a kid walking while their friends are riding, it lives indoors now.

No idea if you'll see this but a bit of balled up aluminum foil and some water does a great job removing rust and tarnish on chromed parts, done this on a lot of bicycle rims and other parts to great success

Nice build! I just installed a basket on the back of my BMX and it looks goofy but it's so useful. I don't do tricks, I just like BMX bikes. Just needs better brakes and a lighter gear ratio. 25/9 in a town that's 80% hills is a bit rough. XD

I did a similar built on a similar bike from the same era - a nice yellow Rebound. It has the same canti brake cable routing as this one. I tried your approach with the cable inner, but I didn't like the brake feel on the rear. Instead I used a band-on cable stop on the top tube. That allowed a more conventional set up for the v-brake cabling. The brakes are great. Great build and the lambda pedals are a great choice.
@waveywheelies
@waveywheelies 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! That’s definitely a good option. The rear brake doesn’t feel bad on this set up, so I’m going to run it as-is for a while.. might try find special ferrule or modify something to have a nicer fit

That bike is mega rad! Turned out great. Inexpensive but functional parts, slightly off color scheme between frame and fork but doesn't hurt the eyes. Super trusty 7speed shifting. If should name one thing I personally would change: the box into a basket, but that is personal preference. And BTW: love your video editing and commenting: no useless turns and loops and talking to make the video longe as it has to be. Time flew by, while watching. Thanks! Keep up your fun. Greetings from Germany

20:56 "I know zipties are'nt the strongest solution" I beg to differ greatly! First of all, the ties would cut into the plastic easily under load and stress. So what would break first is the box. Secondly I had a front-rack break at all three contact points to the fork within a week or so on a big tour. I fixed one failure after the other with zipties and rode another 1500k over the spikiest and cobbliest roads of spain and morroco with close to 10kg on the rack at all times with no issues. So as far as i am concerned zipties are way stronger than any iron, aluminium or cheap steel parts!
