Bangkok's Ratchathewi area is 200m from Siam Square and close to Pratunam. I'll show you the eating, drinking, bars, street food, graffiti park, lots of history, old cinemas, canal life and local soi life around this small but busy part of Bangkok.
The chances are you've visited at some time but simply forgotten about it as it's overshadowed by the shopping areas nearby at Pratunam and Siam. Take the tour and maybe you'll find yourself in this part of Bangkok very soon! Enjoy!
00:00 Start: Intro / Graffiti Park / Old cinemas / Local history
05:03 Asia Hotel haunted
06:53 Hua Chang Bridge / Graffiti at night / Gentrification of a soi / Hollywood Street / Nightlife, bars, food and drink
12:26 A local walk / Soi life / Khlong San Saep / Jim Thompson's house

Interesting video. I met my wife at the Jim Thompson House Museum, where she was working. She was actually 1st runner-up Miss Jim Thompson one year. Lol And to tie in a bit more with your video: Her father was a cinematographer, and helped make movies that were probably shown in those theaters.

I stayed at the Asia hotel 20 years ago this very week, on my first trip to Thailand - it was a cheap add-on when you bought a flight from STA travel. It was a bit shabby back then, but at least it had AC, as the temperature was a shock to my pale English body!

I just spent the last month at the Asia Hotel. I recommend it although I didn't know it was haunted LOL. That soi you walked down near the Jim Thompson House was my meeting place for a couple of local friends before we went to the Jim Thompson museum together. Nice story actually. Two local girls helped me figure out how to work the laundry machines in the neighborhood. I treated them to the Jim Thompson museum. We had a grand time

Asia Hotel was a blast! Slept there for a few (days) nights. My son was a toddler at that time and he told me he saw a ghost outside our room in the hallway. Told my son to tell the ghost in the hallway, that the Aircon in our room wasn’t working properly. The next day it was ice cold in the room. 😁 The breakfast buffet during peak time was like a wasp nest. Never seen something like this before. Loved it, but as I said, just for a few days. Bangkok rocks!

Stayed here on a backpacking trip to BKK in 2018, there is great hostel in the neighbourhood - Diff Hostel, still going as well, I popped in a few weeks back. The Graffiti park looks excellent, NY vibes, as does the bar area, which ive clocked before from the BTS, will definitely head down for beer. Shame about the old cinemas. More Jim's and less Beckhams indeed! Cant wait for the Jim Thompson episode, there is an excellent discussion/investigation on youube covering the theories about his dissappearance!

I'm glad that you did another video of the area near my relative's home, which is north of this intersection on Thanon Phayathai. The 1st time I visited him was back in Christmas/New Year Holiday of 1985-86; this whole area was totally different back then & I still have the pictures that I took at that time. Phayathai Rd. was a divided avenue, all going one way southbound from the Victory Monument & this was a couple of decades before the Sky Train was installed, &, I remember riding across that khlong bridge in my relative's car a few times. I also remember that the roundabout at the Victory Monument didn't have traffic lights to control the traffic flow at that time as well; in a way, it was a smaller version of the infamous Arc De Triomphe Roundabout in Paris, Fr.

Looking forward to your video on the Jim Thomson House! I’d been there three times over the years and have enjoyed eating at the restaurant with a large carp pond on the property.

You had a mural of Ang San Suu Kyi on the wall behind you. The first time I ever went to South East Asia, a very long lime ago, I called in Burma on the way from Calcutta to Bangkok and I changed money and bought noodles at Bogyoke Aung San market in Rangoon. I ate them with the spoon and fork that I carried in my bum-bag. When I finished, I had two hundred people watching me eat noodles with a spoon and fork. I decided it was time to learn to use chop-sticks. So I did.

Wow Pat the old ASIA Hotel stayed there in 1973 it was quite the place back in the day. I would go by it all the time on the BTS but never went back. Nice to see its still there looking good, in fact I was just thinking about that old place . Do you remember the OPERA Hotel near by the First Hotel where all the US Special Forces guys stayed. I stayed there often on for 15 years until it was torn down 2 years ago.

I've passed by the Jim Thompson House many a time on the boat (usually on the way to Bobae), but never actually stopped to look around. Maybe I will, next time. I probably walked through the area that one time I walked all the way from Bobae Market (crossing the rail lines) back to around Pratunam. That was a long walk..
