Another good thing to have around is elastic bands, they can be used to clamp smaller projects like jewellery boxes

Hi there! This is a great tip and I loved to see it. The only thing missing now is how to tidy up your straps into spools to store them more easily. I've done a video on that, if you are interested. Regards, Etna.

Great tip John. I have used the same straps for woodworking projects, but without removing the hooks. They always get in the way, or easily damage the wood. I will be converting some of mine like you did, Very nice

Depending on the job, I use old bike inner tubes. They are elastic, and provide enough clamping pressure for the small projects I've done.

Great trick, and especially good timing as I just picked up 4 ratchet straps and need to epoxy a headboard and footboard together. Not only would this save wear and tear from the hooks marring the work, it will make getting the straps on and tightened down easier and faster

I made some several years ago they have held up very well. I used 3/8" copper tubing instead of the plastic tubing it will probably hold up better.

Cool. U could try to make a version with old bike tube cut off. Elastic and durable. We used them mainly in pre-strap times for clamping plaster molds for wax casting. They neatly wrap also around round or curved surfaces and don't scratch a thing.

I have a shit ton of that style , hook less. got them from the motorcycle dealer I used to work for. They use them to strap the big bikes like Goldwings to the pallet they are shipped on.

John, any pitfalls in using this to clamp a laminated table top (using strips of 2x4s)? I'm wondering if it will cause it to set unevenly.

very handy! Thanks! if you wanted to keep your hooks, couldn't you just run the loop through the ratchet?

I had been using scrap wood to hold the hooks off my project. Or knotting the straps together so the hooks dangle. I like this method much better. Now what is a packrat like me going to do with the hooks I cut off?

Another approach is to just cut off the ends and have one long strap. Tie a knot to make the strap into a loop. Fold the loop and push through the ratchet shaft slot. The knot will stop it from going all the way through the slot. To use put the loop around the material to be clamped, pull the knot to take up the slack and then use the ratchet to tighten.

You could make some simple corner fittings to hold frames of varying degrees too, if you so wished. Might make a more substantial vid too, just saying.

I always tie a small knot in the end of my straps so it doesn't slip out in storage or while flopping around the bed of my truck. I always hated when I picked one up to use it that I was always having to stop to figure out witch way it went back in.

If you don't want to damage the straps, just hook them into something solid like chain links, oval locking carabiners, etc. Ratcheting tie down straps are probably going to be stronger without mods, you really want to avoid this if you can.

Yes, of course. I'm absolutely by you whith that. I only will say, with the enhancement of wooden corners you have a tool, which normaly costs 20 or more Bucks (in Germany i habe to pay 25 Euros for this). So the ratchet strap with corners cost 2 or 3 Bucks. And this is great. Regards from Germany.

Clever things to say: I don't have a green thumb, but I do have a wood eye. The opposite of precision is kerf. Wood classifications: Use it, reuse it, use it for scrap, use it for heat When in doubt, Matthias is right. :)
